Tutu Tuesday in Lloydminster, Alberta: A Celebration of the Frou-Frou

#tututuesday, eh? Well, itā€™s that time again. I woke up this morning with a major case of the frou-frous, so I just *had* to get my tutu on. Honestly, Iā€™m not sure what it is about tutus that just screams *joy* to me, but thereā€™s something so magical about the sheer fabric, the delicate layers, and the way it twirls and swishes when you move. Plus, can we talk about the colour? Pink, blush, pale blueā€¦ tutus are basically the epitome of *pastel perfection.*

As a ballet dancer, tutus hold a special place in my heart. From my first-ever class in a little pink tulle tutu with a matching leotard (oh, the memories!) to the more intricate, handcrafted ones I wear on stage now, theyā€™ve always been a symbol of dreams and possibilities for me. You can say that tutus helped me find my ā€œforever flow,ā€ if you know what I mean!

But, letā€™s be real: even if you donā€™t have the grand jetĆ© gene, or havenā€™t set foot in a ballet studio since you were five, I truly believe that tutus have a unique power to brighten anyoneā€™s day.

Now, before you start envisioning that one frilly pink tutu you mightā€™ve worn to a recital in elementary school (a good look, for sure!), know that the world of tutus is way, *way* bigger than you might think. There are tutus for every mood and style, whether youā€™re after a classic romantic vibe or something a little bit bolder. Weā€™re talking:

  • The **Romantic Tutu:** This is the traditional tutu we all picture ā€“ itā€™s all about graceful lines and layers of sheer tulle, often with a pointed bodice that emphasizes a dancerā€™s long lines. Picture classic works like ā€œSwan Lakeā€ or ā€œGiselleā€ for inspiration.
  • The **Modern Tutu:** Itā€™s all about taking the classic form and adding a little bit of an edge. Think asymmetric shapes, contrasting colors, or even a bit of shredded tulle for that raw, contemporary vibe.
  • The **Layered Tutu:** If you like lots and lots of movement, the layered tutu is the way to go. Think lots of tulle, more than just one or two tiers. And donā€™t be afraid to experiment with colors or even sequins to add some flair!
  • The **Mini Tutu:** Perfect for adding a playful, flirty touch to any outfit, the mini tutu can be found in different colours, patterns, and lengths. Think bright colours for an edgier look, and lighter colors for a sweet and romantic aesthetic.

So, in honor of my #tututuesday obsession, here are a few ways I've been wearing my tutus and what I think will bring *you* the biggest sartorial wins!

  • A Classic Ballet Tutu: Don't think of it as costume wear! This one's perfect with a chic black sweater, opaque tights and combat boots.
  • Layering with a Flowy Skirt: An idea for warmer weather, pairing your tutu with a simple top and layering it over a light maxi skirt creates a dreamy silhouette. Add your fav sandals, and you're good to go.
  • Embracing the Tulle as an Over Skirt: Think about how a layered, soft tulle skirt can give life to that fitted denim jacket you love!
  • Tutu with Leather: Now, hear me outā€¦ I'm talking about pairing your favourite little black dress or tank top with a tiny tutu over top, then layering that with a classic leather jacket or bomber. Seriously, it makes a statement!
  • Mix and Match Tulle Tones: You can create all sorts of awesome looks by layering one tulle shade over another. Think a muted blush over a black tutu. Go for it!

In my mind, there are endless possibilities for this frou-frou fabric.

Today, I'm feeling the "classic romantic" vibes with my go-to pink tutu over a floral print midi skirt and a vintage knit sweater. I paired this with some chunky ankle boots (comfort first!) and my favourite pair of oversized sunglasses to tie the whole look together. And, yes, the ballerina flats are just waiting in my bag if I need a little extra boost. You never know when the dance floor might call, right?

Here's a little tip: for those in the Lloydminster area, or anywhere else in Alberta, Iā€™ve noticed that local vintage stores are often hiding tutu treasures (often at super affordable prices!), and thrifting is always a fun option to create your own personal spin on this classic style! Don't forget to check out dance stores too! They've often got some unique styles, which are super-wearable too!

Let me know in the comments, whatā€™s your go-to #tututuesday look? How do you bring the *frou-frou* to your wardrobe? Iā€™m always looking for new inspiration. So, come on, Canadiansā€¦ Letā€™s keep the spirit of ballet, and the magic of the tutu, alive in Alberta and beyond!
