Tutu Tuesday in Lakeshore, Manitoba: A Whirlwind of Fashion and Pointe Shoes

It's Tuesday, and you know what that means – it's Tutu Tuesday! For those of you who are new to this fabulous day, Tutu Tuesday is a global celebration of all things tutu. It's a time to embrace the whimsical, the feminine, and the utterly enchanting power of a perfectly twirling skirt. And as a Canadian ballet dancer who has fallen head over heels for the tutus of the world, I simply cannot resist the chance to showcase my love for these glorious garments. Today, I'm taking Tutu Tuesday to the picturesque shores of Lakeshore, Manitoba, a place where the wind whips through the prairie grasses and the vast sky meets the horizon in a breathtaking dance of colour. So, put on your favourite tulle and get ready to pirouette your way into this enchanting day!

Manitoba's ballet scene might be a little less well-known than that of some larger cities, but don't let that fool you – there is a vibrant, passionate community of dancers here, making magic with their pointe shoes and passion. As a Manitoba girl at heart, I feel proud to champion the talent that exists right here in my province. And there's no better way to do that than with a #tututuesday post that captures the spirit of this remarkable land.

Speaking of tutus, today I'm wearing a dreamy, layered confection that's practically begging to be twirled. This beauty is a traditional romantic tutu – a silhouette that epitomizes the elegance and grace of ballet. Its flowing layers of tulle cascade down in a soft waterfall, perfectly complementing the shimmering sunlight dancing through the leaves. This tutu reminds me of the ballets that always capture my heart: Swan Lake, Giselle, La Sylphide. These classics truly are timeless testaments to the beauty of the human spirit – something that continues to inspire me to strive for artistry and excellence.

But today, it's all about the tutu. The gentle whisper of the tulle as it glides past my legs is like music to my ears. The way it catches the light and creates a luminous halo around me is magical. It's more than just clothing; it's a symbol of all that ballet embodies: grace, strength, artistry, and a celebration of the body.

A Tutu Time Machine Through Styles

There’s nothing more exciting than exploring the history and evolution of tutu styles, like a fashion time machine of fluttering fabric and artistic evolution. The world of tutu design is a universe of its own, brimming with fascinating twists and turns. We've got the romantic tutus, like mine, that cascade like clouds, each layer of tulle whispering a secret tale.

  • Then there are the tutu variations for different genres:
    • The Classical Tutu – these beauties, often found in Swan Lake or Giselle, were originally made from multiple layers of netting and characterized by their rigid structure. They allow for exceptional airiness and highlight a dancer's precision and athleticism, making the leaps, jetés, and pirouettes seem effortless.
    • The Tutu for Neoclassical Ballet – Neoclassical choreography embraces fluidity and artistic expression and demands a lighter, more streamlined tutu, allowing for greater flexibility and a range of movement that speaks volumes.
    • The Romantic tutu, like mine, has a looser structure than its Classical cousin and, well, looks delightfully romantic!
  • In recent decades, fashion and performance have crossed paths to deliver truly awe-inspiring and boundary-pushing tutus:
    • The Tutu Goes Avant-Garde - Tutus today aren't confined to a singular shape! Today’s designers, such as Dutch designer Iris van Herpen and Viktor & Rolf, are reimagining this iconic piece by combining cutting-edge technology and couture. It’s like the ballerina-inspired art of fashion meets a 3D printed dream of swirling lines.
    • The Tutu Meets Street Style - Streetwear's influence on dancewear has led to an explosion of bold color combos and interesting materials on tutus. It’s not uncommon to see vibrant patterns, graphic lines, and streetwear inspired textiles blending with tulle. And sometimes? The result is breathtaking.

From a ballet dancer’s point of view (literally!), tutus offer more than just a flamboyant look, they tell a story, enhance the movement and performance and even, in some cases, have a real impact on the storytelling in a ballet. And sometimes, when we see a tutu for the first time in a performance, we are just floored, our imaginations ignited. We find ourselves yearning to be transported by a swirl of tulle – the embodiment of our dreams of elegance and artistry.

As the sun dips below the horizon, I bid farewell to Lakeshore, Manitoba, but my #tututuesday celebration continues. Whether you’re on a lakeside stroll, gliding through a city, or stepping onto a stage, remember to let the tutu spirit infuse your day.

So, fellow lovers of all things dance, grab a tulle skirt and twirl your way into this spectacular Tuesday, knowing you are participating in an international celebration that celebrates grace, elegance, and sheer creative flair! #tututuesday.
