Tutu Tuesday in Cape Dorset, Nunavut: A Fashionable Adventure in the Arctic

Hey fashionistas! I'm your girl, Olivia, your Canadian ballet dancer turned blogger bringing you all the latest and greatest in fashion, and today, I'm bringing you something extra special: Tutu Tuesday in Cape Dorset, Nunavut!

Now, you might be thinking, "Olivia, tutus and the Arctic? How does that even work?" Well, my friends, that's the magic of #tututuesday – embracing the unexpected and bringing a touch of whimsy wherever you go.

I’ve always had a passion for ballet, growing up in a small town in Ontario and taking classes since I could barely walk, so I decided to explore how this iconic ballet garment could translate to the icy landscapes of Canada's north. I envisioned the contrast – the flowing tulle juxtaposed with the rugged beauty of the arctic. My goal: bring a little sparkle to the snow.

After a quick stop at a local dancewear store to grab a few tulle masterpieces (think a romantic, flowing classic, a sassy short tutu with layers of shimmering fabric, and a practical, comfortable "everyday" tutu for sightseeing), I landed in Cape Dorset. From the moment I stepped off the plane, it was clear this was a place where art meets nature. There are so many inspiring carvings, sculptures, and printmaking studios – the creativity is thriving here.

I started with a photoshoot near the vibrant art studios, my flowing tutu dancing in the brisk wind. The local residents loved my ensemble, stopping to admire my creation and tell stories about how dance played a role in their own communities. There’s such a powerful sense of tradition and cultural pride here, and seeing how they embraced the unexpected fun of tutu style was amazing.

But my tutu adventure didn’t stop there! After warming up with a steaming cup of arctic tea, we hit the icy shores of the Hudson Bay. The stunning landscape, complete with icy glaciers and snowy peaks, provided the perfect backdrop for my fashion shoot.

I have to say, it was no easy feat balancing in a tutu on slick ice, but hey, that’s part of the fun, right? The wind may have made the tulle swirl in all sorts of exciting directions, but I embraced it – because this isn’t about looking perfect, it’s about being bold and having fun with fashion!

Tutu styles I wore:

  • **Classic Tulle:** A romantic and flowing style that I paired with a bright, colorful knit sweater and a fur-lined jacket. It added a touch of elegance to the arctic landscape.
  • **Short and Sassy:** Perfect for the dance moves, this tutu with multiple layers of shimmering tulle was great for when we did some twirling on the icy ground! Paired with a black sweater and black leggings, it was both stylish and practical.
  • **"Everyday" Tutu:** For our walk around the community and to the art studios, this comfortable tutu with an attached leotard was ideal. It felt like wearing a skirt, but with extra tulle! I topped it with a puffer jacket and my favorite winter boots.

Cape Dorset Tutu Tuesday Lessons Learned:

  • **Express yourself.** No matter where you are in the world, embracing your individuality through fashion is always a good thing!
  • **Don’t be afraid to try something new.** Tutus aren't just for ballet studios – they're for everyday adventures!
  • **Be prepared for anything.** The Arctic can be quite unpredictable, so pack layers and shoes for different terrain – but remember to still have fun!
