Tutu Tuesday in Strong, Ontario, Canada: #tututuesday
Okay, fellow dance lovers, let's talk #tututuesday. It’s not just about the dance; it's about the magic of movement and the power of self-expression. It's about embracing our inner ballerina and feeling that thrill of twirling, leaping, and maybe even landing a perfect arabesque! And it doesn't have to be just for professional dancers, you know? Whether you're a beginner, a pro, or just someone who loves twirling, let's celebrate this wonderful piece of clothing. So, in honour of the tutus, grab your best, most-beautiful, and twirly piece of clothing and join me in this #tututuesday celebration.
The tutu – ah, that iconic piece of clothing. Just seeing one on stage or a dancer, brings such a wave of memories of watching productions like the Nutcracker and Swan Lake as a kid. It was a childhood dream of mine to be a ballerina! Now I'm pursuing my passion in Canada’s thriving ballet scene. But beyond the stage, I'm thrilled to explore how the tutu can be integrated into our everyday lives.
Now, I'm sure you’ve seen your fair share of tutus, and when you say ‘tutu,’ the classic image that comes to mind is the “romantic” tutu with its layers of tulle and airy floaty quality – and they’re magnificent for dancing in. But hey, you’re not a dancer, you say? There are tutus in all shapes and sizes! Did you know they are worn outside of the dance world, by all sorts of people from children to brides, for everyday wear or to express an extra bit of personal style and fashion? How many times have you seen a tiny tutu used for a baby photoshoot? They are so cute! And those romantic styles, even on adults can be really lovely! Some have that "poofy" ballerina look, and they just feel special! Maybe the style with those layers is just what you need to unleash that extra bit of playfulness inside! The “classic tutu” looks super elegant, perfect for wedding day photoshoots, graduation parties or as a fashion statement in your casual wear. This one adds some sophistication to any look!
Then you’ve got the tutus that were used by dancers years ago: the ‘platformed tutu.’ These were much less poofy, and while their functionality as a costume to support dance movements in specific ballets is what made them great – if they’re worn in everyday looks now, they definitely make a statement! But then there's also the “contemporary tutu”, which can have the shape of the traditional tutus but are often shorter, made from lighter fabrics like chiffon and net, to allow for movement during modern choreographed pieces. They have an athletic, and graceful feel to them, that allows for the freedom and expression in contemporary styles of dance. These tutus work well outside of ballet, and blend into casual clothing.
My tutu obsession? Let's just say I'm living for these creative re-interpretations of the tutu. These unique, whimsical takes on the classic tutu are becoming trendy in casual fashion, especially amongst young fashionistas, and I, of course, had to try them out! These modern tutus often mix contrasting textures, bold colours and geometric shapes that work amazingly well with a plain T-shirt, dress or pair of jeans for that ‘cute-and-stylish’ casual day look. They make everyday fashion fun, vibrant, and flirty, so definitely play around with different colors and materials, don’t be afraid to experiment, and create your own special signature tutu look.
So, on this #tututuesday, whether you're dancing in a sparkly romantic tutu for a special event or pairing your favourite tutu-inspired skirt with a t-shirt for a day out with friends, make sure you get those twirls in, embrace your inner ballerina and join the fun on social media with #tututuesday or #StrongOntario to show us your best Tutu Tuesday looks!
