Tutu Tuesday in Durham, New Brunswick: A Celebration of Ballet and Fashion

Hey everyone! It’s your favourite ballerina-slash-blogger, Sarah, coming at you live from sunny Durham, New Brunswick! It’s Tutu Tuesday, and I’m bursting with excitement to share all things tulle, tutus, and the magic of ballet with you! This week’s theme is all about the power of the tutu as a fashion statement both on and off the stage.

As you all know, I’m a huge fan of the tutu. From the romantic wispy tutus to the sleek and modern ones, the versatility and the pure artistry that these garments evoke make me feel like I can conquer the world! It’s like wearing a miniature dance floor, full of grace and poise, even if you’re not actually dancing.

In my experience as a dancer in Canada, the tutu has become so much more than just a uniform. It’s a symbol of creativity, expression, and a powerful way to show off our individual styles. On a Tuesday morning at my favourite local cafe in Durham, a few of my ballet friends and I had an impromptu photoshoot in our everyday tutus – a mixture of vintage finds and new designs that reflected our personal aesthetic. And let me tell ya, heads turned! The street really transformed into a little dance floor, a visual treat for those who dared to stop and stare, not just at our tutus, but also at the beauty of ballet.

For me, the magic of the tutu lies in its ability to take us back to childhood dreams and fairy tales. Even if we are grown up now, putting on a tutu somehow ignites that childlike spirit, that spark of joy that says, “Why not? Let’s dance!

And there's nothing quite like that feeling – that sheer joy and freedom that comes from dancing in a tutu, twirling and pirouetting without a care in the world. It’s a feeling that resonates within you and reminds you that it's okay to be a little whimsical and fabulous. It’s like a big middle finger to the ordinary, a reminder that you can choose joy, sparkle, and creativity. And why wouldn't you? Life’s too short for bland outfits and boring moments, don’t you think?

But let’s not just stay stuck in the world of traditional tutus, shall we? There are so many amazing ways to incorporate the essence of a tutu into our everyday style, making the statement both chic and playful. If you’re not into full-on tulle, think about experimenting with different types of fabrics – maybe a tulle skirt, or a top with tulle detailing. You can add a bit of tulle to your outfit, maybe with a tutu scarf or a tutu headwrap. Even incorporating elements of a tutu's signature colour palette – black, white, pink – into your attire can give you a little dose of ballet-inspired style.

This is where my journey with #Tututuesday began! I'm so grateful for this platform to spread the love for ballet, dance, and creative expression. This weekly journey has shown me the diverse ways we can wear our passion for dance – through our wardrobe, our attitude, and our love for life. #Tututuesday has opened a conversation about embracing individuality and breaking down those stuffy notions that ballet is just for dancers.

As my Tutu Tuesday message concludes, remember that tutus are more than just dancewear – they’re about individuality, artistry, and pure joy! Don't be afraid to express yourself with some tulle and embrace that inner ballerina. Embrace the joy! #Tututuesday #DurhamNewBrunswick.
