Tutu Tuesday in Ashton #tututuesday

Ashton, a quaint town nestled in the heart of the English countryside, might not immediately spring to mind as a hotbed of fashion. But let me tell you, my fellow dance lovers, every Tuesday, the town transforms into a vibrant tapestry of tulle and twirls, thanks to the local dance academy's initiative – #Tututuesday! As a professional ballerina myself, albeit in my late 30s now, the sheer joy of this weekly event warms my heart and my soul. And trust me, this is a tradition I embrace with both arms.

Picture this: a quaint cobbled square, a kaleidoscope of colourful tutus fluttering in the gentle breeze, and the air alive with laughter and the happy clinking of ballet shoes. It's a scene straight out of a fairytale, or perhaps more accurately, a delightful blend of "The Nutcracker" meets a contemporary ballet set in a bustling, charming market square.

Each Tuesday, the academy throws open its doors, inviting all residents of Ashton, regardless of age or experience, to join in a celebration of all things dance. From seasoned ballerinas, who I can only imagine once performed under the twinkling spotlights of the Royal Opera House, to giggling little ones who are taking their very first steps into the world of ballet, #Tututuesday has something for everyone.

It's a real sight to behold. It’s a mix of the romantic and whimsical with a touch of practicality, with every colour of the rainbow being proudly displayed. This is far removed from the rigid black tutus of the traditional ballet classroom, you can see a range of tutus here:

  • The classic Romantic Tutu - light, delicate, with layers of tulle extending outwards, often with floral or ribbon embellishments, harking back to the Romantic era of ballet. It’s a delight to see when the girls twirl.
  • The layered Tulle Tutu – multi-layers with varying colours, giving it a very vibrant look that’s ideal for both solo and group pieces
  • The more practical dancewear "Character Tutu" - which are favoured in class due to its durability and ability to cope with more movement - some dancers might wear it for their routine on Tuesday
  • The contemporary Tutu - which have a looser, and more abstract, silhouette - we might even see an innovative, experimental, artistic performance which is exciting. You could say this is an extension of the traditional Romantic tutu and a natural evolution of the craft

Some of my favourite Tutu Tuesday moments: watching a group of senior citizens attempting their first ever plie (a classic ballet move involving bending your knees) - pure joy, and seeing their pride and sense of achievement is something that fills me with warmth - these ladies have an absolute passion for it!

It's an infectious passion that transcends age, experience, and dance-ability - it truly embodies the true essence of what dance should be: fun, joy, expression, and community.

However, #Tututuesday in Ashton isn't just about the performance, it's also about the community spirit it cultivates. Every week, local vendors gather around the square, offering refreshments, artisanal crafts, and even dancewear – it truly becomes a day out, an all-embracing affair!

And let's not forget about the most vital ingredient of this fantastic community event – the dance academy itself. Founded by a woman who embodies the very spirit of ballet, their founder – and we should all pay tribute to her! - is a powerhouse of passion and talent - the driving force behind the academy, and ultimately, behind the infectious #Tututuesday vibe that captivates the heart of Ashton!

From teaching the basic moves and nurturing young talent to fostering a vibrant sense of community, the dance academy is a beacon of hope, a hub for creativity and celebration of all things beautiful and expressive. They truly show that dance isn't just a pastime or a performance, it’s a powerful expression, a way of life. They deserve a standing ovation for inspiring our whole community, and spreading their love of dance for so many, even those who never had a tutu until their visit to Ashton!

It’s truly inspiring and has brought about a change in my perception of what ballet really means, and what I thought I knew, what I considered it to be. It shows there’s a new generation who have a fresh outlook and perspective of what ballet means to them, their community and our society.

So if you’re looking for a way to escape the pressures of daily life and immerse yourself in the beauty and community of a special day out - and you've always been a Tutu fan, a bit like myself, then put Ashton #Tututuesday on your calendar and make sure to look your very best!
