Tutu Tuesday in Bishops Stortford: A Day of Dance and Delight

Oh, Tutu Tuesday! The day I've been looking forward to all week! For you non-dancers, it's a little something special. Imagine, if you will, the city buzzing with people sporting ballet tutus. It’s a sight that takes you right back to childhood, full of grace and whimsical charm. That’s Tutu Tuesday, an event that started a couple of years ago in our local dance studio and has since exploded. We see tutus on school kids, mothers pushing prams, even bearded men! All embraced in the spirit of dance and joy, turning an ordinary Tuesday into a vibrant dance party!

This Tuesday, Bishops Stortford woke up to a parade of twirling tutus. You know you’re in the right place when you see a granny with a bright pink tulle tutu, a cheeky young lad proudly displaying his blue-and-white tutu, or a couple holding hands in matching pastel-coloured tutus. It’s not about being a perfect ballerina. It’s all about letting go, expressing yourself and having a good old fashioned laugh. It's like wearing a costume that reminds you to have fun, be yourself and move with the rhythm of life. And guess what, folks? It works!

Let’s face it, when was the last time you had an excuse to wear a tutu? We dancers wear them in class, but when was the last time you twirled down the street in one? Tutu Tuesday gave us all that chance. I can tell you, it's incredibly empowering! And as we flitted and twirled, there was laughter in the air, happy chatter everywhere, even a group of people spontaneously breaking into a flash mob routine to a pop song.

The best part? Seeing people light up as we waltzed past, with smiles lighting up their faces and the twinkle in their eyes mirroring the sparkly sequins of the tutus!

As a ballerina, you know that a tutu isn't just a piece of clothing. It's an expression of a dancer's journey. It can symbolize determination, passion, and hard work, and on a lighter note, joy and freedom. For a lot of us, it brings back happy memories of ballet lessons as kids. In many ways, it's like an ode to our inner ballerina, and to all the dreams and hopes we had of gracefully twirling across a stage.

Tutu Tuesday was not about perfect technique or ballet moves, but about being present, engaging in joyful movement, and having fun with fellow twirling enthusiasts. We're talking tutus of all colours and styles; short, puffy, long, sparkly, ruffled – the more elaborate and fantastical, the better!

  • The ‘Classic’ Tutu : A perennial favourite with its delicate layers and delicate tiers. A perfect embodiment of traditional ballet with a timeless charm.
  • The ‘Romantic’ Tutu : The tutu with graceful tiers that enchants us with its flowing form. It reminds us of all those dreamy romantic ballet performances.
  • The ‘Funky Tutu’: It is the brave, the audacious. A canvas for our most colourful and adventurous personality. With bold colours, unique patterns, and a rebellious edge, it breaks the mould of a traditional tutu.
  • The ‘Modern’ Tutu: With a mix of modern textiles and sleek silhouettes, it's not your ordinary, run-of-the-mill tutu. A sophisticated style that's for the fashion-conscious ballerina!
  • The ‘Upcycled’ Tutu : For those who like to give old things a new life. A fantastic option that can give pre-loved pieces a brand-new, stylish twist!

I can tell you that walking down the streets of Bishops Stortford and seeing everyone twirling in their tutus was the best medicine I could ask for. It brought people together, reminded us about our inner child and had everyone saying "Life is for twirling!"

Let's all dance the night away and celebrate our passion for this graceful form of expression! Happy Tutu Tuesday, Bishops Stortford! #tututuesday.
