Tutu Tuesday in Kendal: A Whirlwind of Style and Grace

Hello, my fellow fashionistas! It's me, Lily, your resident ballet blogger and fashion enthusiast, and I'm back with a delightful post about something that's become a little tradition for me: #tututuesday in the charming town of Kendal.

Now, if you haven't joined me in this whimsical journey of ballet fashion, #tututuesday is all about celebrating the captivating world of tutus, those ethereal masterpieces that have graced the stages of ballet for centuries. Each Tuesday, I venture out in my favourite tutu, embracing its femininity and elegance while navigating the daily whirlwind of life in Kendal.

Kendal, for those of you who don't know, is a lovely market town nestled in the heart of the Lake District National Park. It's a charming place with a unique energy and a delightful mix of history and modern living. The cobbled streets, the independent shops, and the majestic hills surrounding it are the perfect backdrop for my tutu adventures.

This particular #tututuesday found me dressed in a soft pink tulle tutu, its layers swirling around my legs as I danced down the high street. This particular tutu was a classic Romantic tutu, with its flowing tiers of tulle. The Romantic tutu is always a timeless choice for ballet and continues to be a favourite for #tututuesday.

My choice of a Romantic tutu today felt fitting given my destination: The Kendal Museum. I was particularly interested in seeing their collection of historical dance costumes, and let's be honest, I also couldn't resist a little bit of a time warp. I could imagine myself gliding across the stage in a similar tutu, filled with grace and elegance, just like the legendary ballerinas of the past.

As I browsed through the museum's exhibit, I found myself drawn to a stunning collection of 19th-century tutus. It was a fascinating insight into how fashion and ballet have evolved throughout the years. The tutus of this era were typically made of layers of tulle, often adorned with sequins and embellishments, creating a look of opulence and splendor.

While I enjoyed seeing these exquisite historical examples, my heart belonged to the contemporary tutus that followed. A selection of modern ballet costumes featured some bold designs, including geometric shapes, abstract patterns, and even materials that were quite unexpected. For instance, one costume was made entirely out of fabric that looked like woven wire. It was absolutely striking.

The inspiration I received from the museum exhibit was palpable, and as I continued my #tututuesday stroll, I couldn't help but consider the modern takes on tutus, and how the classic styles could be adapted to make a statement on the Kendal streets.

Kendal's high street was the perfect canvas. Its blend of traditional architecture, quaint shops, and bustling life gave my tutu an added touch of whimsical charm.

First up, I stopped by The Kendal Bookshop. It was overflowing with stories of every imaginable genre. I felt like I was stepping into a fairytale world with every turn of a page. And my tutu did fit right in, with the magical vibe of the shop.

I later discovered an amazing vintage clothing store, where I found the most beautiful silk scarf to complement my tutu. I loved the idea of combining vintage elements with a classic tutu style.

I must admit, I couldn't help but draw some awed and surprised glances from passersby. I mean, who wouldn't be intrigued by a woman in a pink tulle tutu strolling through town? My #tututuesday mission: spread joy, embrace the unconventional, and maybe inspire a little bit of whimsy into people's days.

My #tututuesday journey wouldn't be complete without mentioning the local coffee shop I visited for a delicious cup of Earl Grey tea and a slice of lemon cake. The ambiance was cozy and inviting. It was a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a bit of the local atmosphere, while, of course, wearing my tutu.

This tutu venture, I realized, wasn't simply about showcasing ballet fashion, but about creating a personal style story. My choice of tutus, accessories, and destinations reflected my personality, and my love for Kendal, its quirks, and its charm.

I can already tell you, #tututuesday is here to stay. This is just the beginning of my fashion adventures. Every Tuesday, you can find me in a different tutu in the streets of Kendal. It's my way of celebrating ballet, fashion, and the beauty of living a little unconventionally. Because, sometimes, it takes a tutu to spark a smile.

So, until next Tuesday, keep your eyes open, you might just spot me twirling my way around Kendal.

And remember: You never know where a #tututuesday adventure might lead.

Until then, keep dancing and stay stylish!

Love, Lily

Now, let's talk tutus!

  • Romantic tutus - As mentioned before, these tutus have a romantic and graceful air with flowing tiers of tulle, evoking the beauty and grace of ballet.
  • Classical tutus - These are a little more structured with a shorter skirt that is often stiffened with layers of crinoline or a hoop. Classical tutus often include a tight bodice and create a classic ballet silhouette. This style of tutu often appears in productions of ballet classics like "Swan Lake," "Sleeping Beauty," and "The Nutcracker."
  • Modern tutus - Think of the modern ballet tutus like a blank canvas for creative expression! Modern tutus break the rules of the classic tutus by embracing non-traditional materials and unconventional designs. You can find these tutus in a range of colors and shapes, some with layers of fringe, feather embellishments, or even a simple piece of fabric. They often reflect the choreography, emphasize the dancer's movement, and add a touch of contemporary flair to ballet.
  • Character tutus - These tutus, are designed for specific characters, like a fairy or a princess. These often reflect the personality and story of the character they represent. This makes them unique and very intriguing. They may be constructed with unique details like ribbons, wings, or other specific embellishments.

Every tutu tells a story. I love the story that each tutu tells on a #tututuesday!

So, if you're looking to add a bit of elegance, grace, and fun to your life, I invite you to join me in a #tututuesday adventure.
