Tutu Tuesday in Huyton: A Rainbow of Whimsy

It’s Tutu Tuesday in Huyton, and my heart is fluttering with excitement. Huyton, you ask? Yes! This delightful little town in the North West of England has become a veritable beacon of ballet bliss. Why? Because everyone loves tutus, darling! We all do, really! Even the boys. Don't be shy now! Embrace the tutu!

Today, the streets are alive with tutus, glittering with an almost magical quality, reminiscent of a unicorn’s coat catching the sun. Imagine the cutest pink tutus – fluffy tulle skirts that tickle your legs – and you’ve only begun to scratch the surface of the sartorial spectacle that is Tutu Tuesday in Huyton.

From the classical elegance of a traditional ballet tutu with its tiers of stiffened tulle, perfect for those who dream of dancing with the Bolshoi, to the playful frolics of the tutu dress in candy floss pink with a delicate sequined bodice, a masterpiece that channels the whimsical spirit of a ballerina fairy. Every single one of them – a glorious celebration of ballet, unicorns, and tutus, the epitome of ‘fancy dress’ fun!

It's been a delightful journey over the last few weeks watching this #tututuesday phenomenon unfold in Huyton. People, especially the children, have embraced the opportunity to channel their inner fairy. Their faces, glowing with delight, mirror the joy radiating from every tulle ruffle.

This vibrant, exuberant movement all started a couple of months ago when I - a ballet dancer turned blogger turned #tututuesday advocate – had an idea: let's inject some joy, some light-heartedness, into the mundane by spreading the love for tutus. I mean, who doesn't adore tutus?

From its initial small beginnings as just a hashtag, #tututuesday quickly blossomed. It spread faster than a rumour through a ballet studio; word of mouth is magic. Soon, my Instagram posts were overflowing with the delightful images of pink-clad, tutu-sporting friends and neighbours!

Today, Huyton is truly alive! Everywhere I look there's a shimmer of tulle, a rainbow of fabrics with an underlying sparkle. It's quite frankly glorious – from the supermarket to the park, to the school - even the dog is sporting a little pink tutu! (She did have an aversion to wearing clothes; I did consider the idea of using a tutu-shaped ribbon tied around her collar – she’s quite a strong, stubborn dog… but let’s leave it at ‘reluctant’ – I am trying to avoid being ‘dragged’ through Huyton by a large dog dressed like a ballerina! ).

The energy is electrifying, the laughter infectious – this isn’t your run-of-the-mill tutu event. The spirit is anything but prim and proper. Think high kicks, spins, lots of pink, laughter and pure fun! This isn’t about the strict rules of ballet – this is all about having a brilliant time wearing a tutu. We're taking it to a new level of whimsical and daring, adding our own spin, or rather, pirouette, on tradition. We're not just about ballet - we're embracing the tutu in all its glory. And believe me, the magic really takes off when you start adding unicorns into the mix.

There’s an air of festivity in the town centre. There’s the soft sound of a vintage disco track drifting from a shopfront, and there's even a mobile unicorn parked in the corner! Oh, it has sparkly pink mane that twirls with the breeze. And yes, you have guessed correctly – there is a little girl dancing to a disco beat, she’s in a tutu and has the cutest unicorn headband. She doesn't even have a care in the world! I almost shed a tear, she’s the living embodiment of #tututuesday. She is proof positive that Huyton has discovered the ultimate joy in simple fun and fashion – it’s magical!

But let's get real: it's more than just fashion. It’s about breaking the barriers and letting your freak flag fly – and frankly, wearing a tutu helps do that! It’s about embracing the whimsical, letting loose in your ‘ballet-fabulous’ outfit, embracing all the amazing things about being yourself. That's what #tututuesday is all about - celebrating uniqueness.

It's a little bit of magic for the soul. And that, my darling Huyton, is truly remarkable. And let's not forget – a great way to have some fun!
