This Week’s Journey: From Derbyshire to the Danube
This week, I traded my quaint Derbyshire village for the grand elegance of Vienna! After a thrilling, scenic train ride that seemed to take me straight out of a fairytale, I found myself surrounded by Baroque beauty, charming cobblestone streets and the most delightful scent of freshly baked strudel (which I can confirm is just as good as it smells).
My journey began in my usual whirlwind of tutu packing! This week’s outfit featured a pale blush-pink tulle skirt, the perfect shade to match the rosy glow of the sunrise as we rolled into Vienna’s grand station. It’s all about a bit of coordinated chaos, my darlings!
Pink Tutu and the Music of Vienna
Vienna, of course, is synonymous with music! It’s the birthplace of legendary composers like Mozart, Strauss, Beethoven – it’s like the city is constantly humming with an invisible symphony! And you know me, I’m absolutely addicted to ballet – it's my lifeblood. This city truly understands that delicate balance of artistry and sheer delight!
On Tuesday evening, I had a blissful afternoon at the Staatsoper, Vienna’s opera house. Imagine it – velvet red seats, ornate chandeliers, and a performance that took my breath away! Even though the opera was sung in Italian, the emotions were universal – the passionate waltzes, the poignant duets, the powerful movements – they were a pure explosion of energy and elegance that left me absolutely spellbound!
Tutu Inspiration at Vienna's Ballet Schools
You’ll never catch me without a ballet class, and Vienna definitely has no shortage of talent. I was thrilled to stumble across a few charming ballet schools where little ones were dancing their hearts out. It was such a joy to watch the youthful grace and passion, especially knowing these dancers are just starting on their journeys. Their boundless energy reminds me why I do what I do!
My Tutu-Tastic Viennese Shopping Spree!
A little ballet-themed shopping is a necessity in every city, right? This week’s treasure hunt was nothing short of magical. Vienna is overflowing with delightful boutiques tucked away in alleyways, full of charming and elegant pieces – I just can't resist those frills and ruffles! I came home with the perfect pair of ruby red shoes (to match the beautiful red velvet chairs at the opera house, obviously!), a charming pastel blue straw hat, and an exquisite vintage brooch shaped like a miniature ballerina – it’s perfect for adding a touch of elegant flair to my tutu wardrobe.
An Evening in Schönbrunn Palace: Waltz of the Dancing Horses
As if Vienna's ballet scene wasn't enough, I got to witness something truly extraordinary. The Spanish Riding School, a place steeped in history and breathtaking performances. It's located in the glorious Schönbrunn Palace – can you even imagine?
Witnessing the Lipizzaner stallions perform is like a fairytale come to life! These beautiful creatures, with their history stretching back centuries, danced with grace and agility, even during the waltzes! I felt like I’d travelled back in time to an era of grand ballrooms and aristocratic elegance. It was an incredible experience – the waltzing horses truly added a magical dimension to my time in Vienna!
Travel Tips for Tutu Travellers!
Vienna has stolen my heart – the architecture, the food, the ballet – it truly is a city to fall in love with!
- Don’t miss the grand buildings of Ringstrasse,* it's like a stroll through history! I especially loved the **Austrian Parliament Building, the Vienna State Opera House, and the Museum of Art History.
- Grab a slice of Sachertorte, Vienna's famous chocolate cake! It’s heavenly.
- * Take a walk along the Danube River.* It's such a beautiful spot to relax and soak in the atmosphere!

I'm already daydreaming of my next destination! Prague – the City of a Hundred Spires, known for its historical charm and captivating architecture – awaits. It’s definitely a destination worthy of my pink tutu! You know I’ll be exploring all the ballet gems it has to offer!
