Pink Tutu Vienna: Blog Post Number 32 - 13th December 1995

Dearest readers! It's Wednesday, which means it's time for another exciting Pink Tutu Vienna adventure. Grab a cuppa, snuggle into your favourite pink-hued dressing gown, and join me for a journey into the heart of Vienna!

Oh my goodness, darling readers, I am positively beside myself with excitement. The weather is crisp, the air smells of roasted chestnuts and gingerbread, and Vienna is sparkling with the most magical festive cheer. Everywhere I go, twinkling Christmas lights, adorned with miniature pink bows (I can't help but think how much nicer they are when pink!), twinkle like stars in the dusky Vienna evenings.

Last week, I was busy touring Salzburg - did I mention I went horseback riding through the Salzburg countryside?! What an exhilarating adventure! We even had a snowball fight with the locals (no harm done, I assure you - we're both incredibly graceful!), and I even managed to find a pink-tutu shop tucked away in the old town, selling exquisite, custom-made pink tulle creations. Oh, how I want to buy the entire shop! And speaking of custom, have you ever noticed how a custom-made pink tutu seems to almost...transform you? It's a confidence boost like no other!

Back to Vienna! This week, I'm all about ballet, naturally! Vienna is practically bursting with ballet heritage and culture, and today I'm taking a class at the prestigious Vienna State Opera Ballet School. I’m quite excited to put my best foot forward in a class filled with dancers, but of course, my darling Pink Tutu (which, you will be happy to know, is a shimmering lavender hue for today’s adventure!) is absolutely not being left behind. After all, my Pink Tutu never gets left behind; even at ballet class! She is a fabulous, supportive dance partner, you see.

This evening, I'm attending the world-renowned Vienna State Opera - gasps of excitement! This evening's performance is a timeless classic, "The Nutcracker," which I've loved since I was a little girl, and I'm simply overflowing with joy! I love how "The Nutcracker" features beautiful dances, grand costumes (which are quite fabulously pink, naturally), and magical storytelling that transports you into a world of enchantment. My Pink Tutu and I will be seated right in the centre, savouring every second of the production - what an absolute dream!

Between the ballet classes, opera house adventures, and sightseeing, I’m squeezing in some incredible fashion moments. This week, Vienna's fashion scene has been overflowing with some truly magnificent shops. The boutiques in the "Golden Quarter" - the name makes me want to get my credit card out, it is quite literally dripping with opulence, darling readers, are like something out of a dream! From dazzling jewels and glamorous shoes, to breathtaking couture, the boutiques offer a smorgasbord of Parisian elegance. The clothes shops on the Kärntner Strasse have been utterly fabulous too, especially the windows - you simply can’t miss them, because they have been decorated with enormous pink ribbons and tulle ruffles, perfect for getting me into the pink tutu spirit! The only problem is, of course, my luggage will likely explode when I go home - oh, the joy!

For the time being, however, the world is my pink-tutu oyster, so to speak, and I am savouring each delightful moment, the warmth, the laughter, the stunning architecture and the captivating charm of this wonderful city, while making it even pinker one tutu-ful step at a time.

If you ever find yourself in Vienna, do say hello! And in the meantime, stay beautiful, be kind, and wear pink!

Much love and twirls,

Emma,

Your Pink Tutu Vienna blogger xx

And, for an added bonus, here is what the world was celebrating this day in 1995, in case you missed it.

  • Nelson Mandela, beloved Nobel peace laureate, officially stepped down as South African President after serving just one term. A truly iconic man, one of the greatest leaders of the 20th Century, a symbol of forgiveness and compassion, and the personification of how, in the words of Martin Luther King Jr. “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." I don't think we'll ever forget him.

  • Speaking of music, the 15th Annual MTV Video Music Awards were presented in New York City. Who won "Best Female Video" (a.k.a., "the one everyone wanted") you ask? Well, it was none other than none other than the absolutely fabulous Alanis Morissette, who was certainly one of the most successful female musicians at that time, with "You Oughta Know". The "jagged little pill" (who doesn’t love that song, by the way!), she was well deserving, don't you think?

That’s it for today! Remember to stop by next week, where I’ll tell you all about my latest adventures - I will be exploring the beautiful palaces and gardens of Schönbrunn. If you’d like, do suggest something for my travels - a particular ballet performance, shop, restaurant, or attraction. I do love a good recommendation.

Until next week, darling readers, remember to twirl often, dance bravely, and always embrace the beauty and the fun that surrounds us all! xx
