Pink Tutu Vienna: Post No. 75 - The City of Waltz & Whirl! (October 9, 1996)

Darling dears,

It’s Wednesday again, which means it's time for another instalment of Pink Tutu Vienna! This week I’m absolutely overflowing with excitement after an absolutely fabulous whirlwind of a few days exploring the heart of Austria - Vienna! This beautiful city is the embodiment of romance, history and... well, more romance! Imagine, dear reader, cobblestone streets, magnificent palaces and churches adorned with intricate details, and parks that feel straight out of a fairytale! It's no surprise Vienna is the home of Mozart, Strauss, and, most importantly to this pink tutu wearer, the Viennese Waltz!

Vienna, it seems, has always held a special place in my heart, even before I set foot in this glorious city. I’ve loved the Waltz ever since my first ballet lessons back in Derbyshire. The gentle, gliding steps, the swirl of the skirts, the grace and fluidity… it’s pure magic! I even found a dusty old book in the attic back home on the history of the waltz, a rather interesting piece on the etiquette and dress of the ballrooms of Vienna! As for the dress, well… need I say more? Think floor length gowns with delicate embroidery and feathers, the perfect way to complement a stunning waltz move!

Of course, no visit to Vienna would be complete without a visit to the Vienna State Opera, one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses. Imagine this, darling: I sat in the most splendid theatre, gilded from top to bottom, adorned with crimson velvet and ornate carvings, just waiting to be entranced by a magnificent performance! This week, I saw Don Giovanni, Mozart’s most captivating work! As soon as the orchestra started playing those beautiful melodies, my heart swelled with excitement! The music, the singing, the dancing – all simply breathtaking! And don’t even get me started on the costumes! Some of the ladies wore dresses that could only be described as works of art, all swirling silks, sequins, and feathers! I even spotted a fellow ballet enthusiast in the audience who had decided to make a statement with a vibrant red tutu… Talk about a head-turner!

But it wasn’t just about opera and dancing for this week’s Pink Tutu adventure, no! I was also captivated by Vienna’s beautiful parks and gardens, like the Schonbrunn Palace Gardens, with their vast expanse of manicured lawns, whimsical fountains, and an adorable miniature zoo filled with exotic animals, which I thoroughly enjoyed strolling through in a sunshine yellow tutu, for an elegant yet carefree touch to my day!

Oh, the shopping! I had to squeeze in some retail therapy, and Vienna did not disappoint. I discovered the most enchanting little boutiques hidden within charming alleyways, each with their own unique charm and treasure trove of delightful clothing. One particular store that captured my heart was full of gorgeous vintage dresses! I simply couldn't resist acquiring a stunning 1920s flapper dress with beautiful beaded detailing – perfect for twirling!

For the evening, my love of horses took me to a local riding school where I participated in a traditional Viennese horseback carriage ride. Picture it – myself in a crisp white linen dress and a flowing pink tulle skirt, nestled inside the carriage alongside the handsome, elegant stallions! As the carriage trundled through the city, the streets transformed into a stage for a grand ballet of their own – the beautiful city, the people, the horse-drawn carriages, all woven together into a story of elegance and timeless beauty.

As the evening concluded with the delicious scent of fresh bread wafting from local bakeries, it was impossible not to feel utterly charmed by this city. Vienna is a treasure trove of culture, history, and magic, where every corner holds a new story waiting to be discovered. And I, darling, wouldn't have it any other way. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to buy some pink tulle for a new creation!

Until next Wednesday, keep twirling, keep sparkling, and keep that pink tutu spirit alive!

Yours truly,

Emma
