Pink Tutu Vienna: A Waltz in the Austrian Capital (Post #114)

Good morning, darlings! It's Wednesday, which means it's time for a fresh post from your favourite pink tutu-clad blogger, right here in the heart of Vienna! As you all know, my passion for pink and all things tutu knows no bounds, and Austria is proving to be a veritable wonderland for my fashionable soul. This week, we're delving into the enchanting world of Viennese ballet and exploring the city's delightful charm through the prism of my beloved pink tutu.

Vienna - Where the Waltz Rules!

Oh, Vienna, how you've captured my heart! I arrived in this beautiful city on Monday, having travelled by train from Prague. (Do you know how excited I was to wear my newest pink tulle dress on the train journey?! I think I even convinced the train guard to let me do a pirouette or two in the corridor...shh!) Since stepping into Vienna, I feel like I've stepped onto a grand stage set for a Viennese waltz. The grand avenues, the baroque architecture, the coffee shops filled with locals indulging in sweet treats – it all seems perfectly choreographed!

Vienna has a long and rich history, of course. And its connection to the waltz, as everyone knows, is legendary. There’s a certain elegance to the way people move here - a poise, a graceful sway that's so wonderfully Viennese! Just seeing how effortlessly Viennese women waltz down the cobbled streets makes me want to whip out my own tutu and join in!

Ballet Bliss in Vienna

This week, I'm attending two amazing ballet performances. My heart is aflutter, dear readers, because this Wednesday I'm heading to the magnificent Vienna State Opera to see a performance of “Swan Lake." This is my very first time seeing this classic, and I simply cannot wait to witness the choreography, the costuming, and of course, the stunning music! On Friday, I’m catching a performance by the Vienna Ballet at the Vienna Volksoper. This show is an intriguing adaptation of “The Little Mermaid," with an emphasis on contemporary ballet styles – something a little less traditional and something I’m really eager to see!

In between these two shows, I’ve been enjoying some proper ballerina shopping! Vienna’s shops are simply divine. I found the most adorable tutu at a shop on Graben, and I simply couldn’t resist a pink satin hair ribbon to match. My suitcase is bursting at the seams with treasures - new fabrics to inspire future tutus, a stunning brocade jacket that will look perfectly chic over my pink tulle skirt…and yes, another pair of dancing shoes because you can never have too many shoes, darling!

Tutus Through Time

Of course, it wouldn't be a proper Pink Tutu Vienna post without a bit of tutu history. As we're on the topic of Vienna, I simply have to share the history of the Viennese waltz and its fascinating connection to dance attire! In the early 18th century, waltzes became a popular form of dance, especially in Vienna. This led to a demand for more comfortable and practical dance attire for women. The crinolines worn during that era were simply not suited for the fluid and swirling movements of the waltz. So, a new fashion emerged - lighter fabrics and shorter skirts, creating a silhouette that enabled graceful and unconstrained movement!

The tutu itself wasn't quite "born" in Vienna - its lineage actually traces back to Marie Taglioni's famed performance of “La Sylphide” in Paris, where the skirt, rather than a rigid silhouette, began to embody the free movement and airy grace of the ballet. Yet, you can see how the Vienna of the early 18th century – with its love for dancing and its quest for comfort in dance wear - set the scene for this evolution!

And who can argue, darling, that there is a deeper connection between Vienna’s love for the waltz and our fascination with the graceful tutus that have defined ballet history?

Tutu Style on the Streets of Vienna

Even though Vienna is teeming with traditional Viennese elegance, there's also a distinctly modern feel to the fashion scene here. I’ve spotted more than a few fashionable individuals rocking colourful tutu-inspired skirts and dresses! I couldn't help but whip out my camera and capture their stylish moves - there’s nothing like seeing your beloved tutus take over the streets, especially in such a sophisticated city like Vienna!

Today, my pink tutu has inspired an entire look. I've paired my tutu with a delicate lace blouse, and of course, my favourite pink cardie! I even went bold and threw on some fuchsia lipstick, just to match! I’m taking my “Pink Tutu Vienna” style to the famous Naschmarkt today, to enjoy a traditional Viennese breakfast - I’m dreaming of strudel! And then I'm off to explore the Kunsthistorisches Museum – perhaps I can find some inspiration there for a future post!

Speaking of which, do share your own travel stories in the comments below. What's the most fabulous outfit you've worn while travelling? I always love hearing your style inspiration!
