Pink Tutu Vienna: Post #149 - A Whirlwind of Waltz and Wiener Schnitzel!

Wednesday, 11th March 1998

Dearest Pink Tutu readers,

I hope this blog finds you twirling in happiness and wearing a beautiful shade of pink!

Today, I'm writing to you from the heart of Vienna, Austria, a city so elegant and enchanting, it feels like I've stepped right into a Strauss waltz! I arrived yesterday, having boarded a rather splendid train in Salzburg ā€“ a carriage complete with plush velvet seats and a window view fit for a queen! (Who needs first class when you have a tutu, right?)

The journey was filled with the picturesque countryside of the Austrian Alps, and the journey's end, well, the arrival in Vienna was simply magical! Imagine rolling in on a silver rail, a panorama of imposing architecture and pastel buildings rising up around you. It's no wonder Vienna has been known as ā€œThe City of Musicā€!

Of course, I couldnā€™t arrive without a splash of pink. Today, I was positively radiating in a lovely, hand-stitched tutu of pale rose silk, the skirt trimmed with rows of fluffy white tulle and shimmering sequins, that caught the afternoon sun just perfectly as I stepped out of the station.

Now, Iā€™ve got to tell you, Viennese style is a marvel to behold! Think traditional costumes with modern flourishes. Think intricate embroidery on silk blouses, sharp tailoring for gentlemen, and delicate hats adorned with feathers! Thereā€™s definitely an air of grace and polish to the whole look.

My afternoon was dedicated to experiencing the wonders of Viennese couture! I waltzed my way down the charming, narrow streets and lost myself in the window displays of boutiques boasting a vibrant collection of Austrian designers. It was quite delightful! I spied several elegant, ruffled blouses in the most vibrant shades of pink. Unfortunately, my luggage allowance for this trip wouldnā€™t allow me to take them all back home!

Speaking of my beloved pink tutus, I'm itching to share a rather incredible experience with you. After browsing, I stumbled upon the most exquisite vintage tutu shop! Nestled in a quaint alley, tucked between a cafe serving apfelstrudel and a chocolatier boasting handcrafted marzipan figurines, it held an entire world of tutus from times past, from simple, practical dancersā€™ tutus, to the dazzling, elaborately designed pieces made for the grand ballerinas of yesteryear.

The shop was crammed with velvet cases and drawers filled with silk and tulle in an endless array of hues, with the fragrant smell of faded perfume clinging to the air. The owner, an elderly lady with a warm smile, shared stories of Viennaā€™s famous ballerinas and the iconic tutus worn by the legendary Vienna Opera Ballet.

I confess, my heart practically leaped with joy. It was like stepping back in time, touching the ghosts of those majestic ballerinas and their exquisite tutus.

You wouldnā€™t believe it, but I ended up leaving the shop with a precious souvenir - a small, intricately designed, 19th-century tutu from a famed ballet company. Now, I can say I have a little bit of Viennaā€™s ballet history, as well as my Pink Tutu London's story in my wardrobe.

But there's so much more! This evening, I'm planning on experiencing Viennaā€™s grand traditions ā€“ attending a performance at the Vienna Opera. This time, my tutu wonā€™t be quite so fancy ā€“ I will have a classic tutu, in pink of course! but adorned with a sprinkling of sparkles. Think pink sparkles to complement the gorgeous velvet and gilt of the Vienna Opera house, a place filled with incredible history.

It is the perfect evening to delve into the history of Viennese ballet ā€“ its origins, the renowned performers who have graced the stage of this grand house, and the exquisite choreography thatā€™s so intertwined with the cityā€™s musical heritage.

Oh, and of course, I mustn't forget the local food! My evening is punctuated by an opportunity to experience Viennaā€™s gastronomy. I'm hoping for the ultimate Vienna dining experience with a traditional Wiener Schnitzel at a charming, rustic tavern - with an authentic wooden table and walls covered in historical photographs.

Iā€™ll fill you in all about the show and the feast in my next post. I cannot wait to share the beauty of Vienna and all it has to offer with you next Wednesday!

Until then, remember to keep twirling, cherish every moment, and, most importantly, never forget your pink tutu!

Your ever-so-pink,

Emma
