Pink Tutu Vienna: A Ballet-tastic Blitz!

Wednesday 13th January 1999 - Post #193

Guten Tag, darling tutu lovers! This week, Vienna is shimmering in a snowy waltz, a picture perfect postcard of fairytale charm. From my little hotel room, with its window overlooking a snow-laden cobblestone square, it's impossible not to feel a flutter of excitement.

But before I whisk you away on a Viennese adventure, let me fill you in on my recent adventures back in Derbyshire. Imagine this: I'm twirling through the winter countryside on horseback, the frosty wind whipping my hair, a symphony of bird song swirling around us. It was a truly magical way to spend a Saturday afternoon, especially as my steed was the perfect shade of chestnut – just the colour to complement my new dusty rose tutu!

Talking about tutus...I spent last week utterly obsessed with the fascinating world of tutus. Did you know there was a whole exhibition dedicated to them at the V&A museum? You can imagine me, amidst the beautiful ballet and theatre costumes, twirling around like a giddy ballerina. My current favourite – a lusciously layered white tulle creation that belonged to Margot Fonteyn. A perfect piece of history captured in lace and tulle!

This trip to Vienna is funded by my beloved ballet gigs – three consecutive evenings spent performing at the fabulous Regent Theatre. The audiences were fantastic – I could tell they adored "The Sleeping Beauty." I love the stories behind the classic ballets – and the beautiful costumes, of course! For this production, I opted for a beautiful cerise tutu and a dazzling sparkly leotard - absolutely perfect for bringing to life the mischievous role of Aurora’s mischievous fairy godmother! The sound of applause still rings in my ears - I love that rush of joy and affirmation after each performance.

But back to the Viennese whirlwind, shall we? After a whirlwind shopping trip for beautiful Austrian lace and fabrics, a trip I can barely talk about, I am planning to visit the fabulous Vienna State Opera – I've heard their new production of "The Nutcracker" is simply spectacular. Imagine my joy when I saw a stunning emerald-green, gem-studded tutu backstage! How simply delightful – that's my vision of ballerinas dancing through a snowy winter wonderland – just like the city I’m exploring!

Oh, and on my explorations of Vienna, you might find me enjoying a delectable Sacher Torte at the grand CafΓ© Sacher – its decadent chocolate flavour is as tempting as a juicy ripe strawberry. This delightful city is alive with artistic brilliance – a true inspiration for this tutu-wearing ballet enthusiast!

Keep checking in, darlings. Until next week, may all your days be filled with pirouettes, laughter and twirls.

Lots of love,

Emma xx
