Pink Tutu Vienna - Blog Post #293

Wednesday, 13th December 2000

Guten Tag, my dearest Pink Tutu darlings! Emma here, reporting live from the enchanting city of Vienna! It feels positively magical here, as if every cobblestone whispers a story of waltzes and emperors.

The journey here was, as ever, a whimsical adventure. First, a lovely train ride through the rolling English countryside, the steam engine puffing out plumes of white smoke like ballet dancers' skirts. Then, a smooth flight to Vienna, where the Austrian countryside unfolded like a masterpiece painted in autumnal colours. The air here is crisp and alive, carrying with it the scent of cinnamon and hot chocolate. Can't wait to explore the city's famous cafes!

I have to confess, I brought a little surprise with me - a brand new pink tutu. It's a beautiful thing, with delicate layers of tulle and shimmering silver beads that catch the light. I envision myself twirling through the streets of Vienna, my tutu swirling around me like a pink cloud.

Speaking of tutus, today's topic is all about those delicate creations. My favourite place to visit here has been the Vienna State Opera. I simply had to step inside its grand halls and soak in the history. It's not just the exquisite architecture or the captivating performances that draw me here. The building is actually home to one of the most incredible collections of ballet costumes in the world, including a breathtaking display of historical tutus! From the grand ball gowns of the Romantic era to the sleek, modern designs of the 20th century, the costumes tell a fascinating story of ballet's evolution, and it's like stepping into a fairytale.

I was particularly smitten with the original costume designed for "The Sleeping Beauty," it’s almost as famous as the ballet itself! It's a pale pink creation, crafted from layers of tulle and lace, with a cascading train that sweeps gracefully across the stage. The design is so detailed, so ethereal, it practically dances before your very eyes! The sheer brilliance of those early costume designers, they were artists in their own right, working magic with fabrics and embellishments. I have to try to find a shop selling tutus in the city centre; imagine, the Vienna State Opera, the heart of ballet history, and a local boutique, I feel inspired!

Oh, I almost forgot to mention, last night I attended the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, an extraordinary musical experience. The entire hall was adorned with golden decorations, the velvet seats were deep and inviting, and the musicians were dressed in crisp black tails, ready to create magic. I felt as if I’d stepped into a ballet scene, ready to be whisked away by the swirling melodies.

The programme included Strauss waltzes, a perfect pairing for a twirling tutu! It was a truly enchanting evening, each musical phrase shimmering like a pearl, each string section echoing a graceful gesture. It almost felt like dancing, not with my feet, but with my very soul.

But speaking of dancing, I had to find a ballet class, after all, I'm on a mission, remember? My goal, you all know, is to get everyone in the world to wear a pink tutu. Here in Vienna, ballet is as much a part of the culture as the iconic coffeehouses or the legendary pastries. I found the most charming little ballet studio in a quiet corner of the city, hidden amongst cobblestone streets and quaint shops. I have to confess, my skills are still a little rusty, but there's no place like a good ballet class to shake off any travel fatigue!

The class, it was such a joyous experience, and so encouraging for someone a bit out of practice! The instructor, Frau Schmidt, a graceful lady with a twinkle in her eye, taught me some lovely exercises. And I was surrounded by eager dancers, both young and old, each twirling and leaping with an infectious energy. The studio, with its light, airy space, was an excellent space to practice. There was a beautiful energy to it, as if every turn and arabesque whispered the city’s hidden stories.

I must share with you one of my most delicious discoveries from my Vienna travels. I've been exploring some delightful cafes in the city, and yesterday, I found the most charming little place, "Cafe Sacher," nestled on the famous "Kärntner Straße." It's a historic gem with opulent decorations and chandeliers. It's so beautiful it makes your head spin. The waiters were charming and formal, like they stepped out of an opera. I savored every delicious morsel of a divine chocolate cake - a melt-in-your-mouth confection that made me sigh in utter contentment! And for those who know Vienna, you’ll agree it’s not an ordinary chocolate cake. The secret lies in the marmalade that fills its centre, it adds an extra level of intrigue! I simply couldn't resist indulging. You must try it, my lovely tutu wearers!

Vienna is an incredible city! So far, I have enjoyed the famous imperial palaces and breathtaking architecture, with the Baroque opulence leaving me quite speechless, and all adorned with pastel pinks and shimmering golds. I feel like I am right at home! But Vienna also has a wonderfully bohemian edge, with independent boutiques, hip street art, and a flourishing cultural scene. Everywhere you go there is something unique and fascinating to discover, and it's all surrounded by this delightful sense of tradition.

Today, my darling Pink Tutu enthusiasts, I'm heading off to visit Schönbrunn Palace! This summer palace of the Habsburg dynasty is famous for its breathtaking gardens, magnificent buildings, and historical significance. The palace has a stunning blend of elegance and history that I can’t wait to explore! And what could be more perfect than visiting the home of Empress Maria Theresa - her court, you know, was known for their love of dancing and entertainment. Just picture her, the empress of Austria, dancing her graceful waltz with the elegant courtiers, perhaps wearing a fabulous pink tutu, or maybe she favored something emerald green? Who knows, history whispers its secrets!

After exploring Schönbrunn, I'm taking a carriage ride through the beautiful Prater park! A horse-drawn carriage, the perfect fairytale carriage ride, just perfect to cap off the day! I shall post more photos of my adventures later, with pictures of my gorgeous pink tutu. I can't wait to share more magical moments from Vienna.

Keep on twirling, my dear Pink Tutu enthusiasts, Emma x
