Vienna, darling, Vienna! (Blog Post #392)
Oh, my dears! What a week it's been. I simply had to tell you about my whirlwind trip to Vienna, the city of waltz and waltzing, and, of course, the most divine architecture imaginable! As you know, this Wednesday's post is a Vienna special, a tradition we've made in honour of this extraordinary city. And, of course, I simply couldn't resist the allure of my favourite shade of pink, adorning everything from the Imperial Palace to the local ice cream parlour.
Let's dive into the heart of this charming metropolis, shall we? The train journey from Derbyshire was just as lovely as ever. The rolling green hills and charming countryside, whizzing past at a leisurely pace, never fails to lift my spirits. I have to admit, a journey of this length just isn't the same without a little tutu magic, so I made sure to choose a twirling-worthy, bubblegum pink tutu that I picked up in the cutest little boutique on Bond Street. The carriage even had a charming conductor with the kindest eyes – I swear he must have noticed my dazzling tutu because he smiled, offering me a warm, “Good morning, madam, you look absolutely delightful!”. A perfect start to a fantastic journey!
Arriving in Vienna felt like stepping into a fairytale, or rather, an enormous open-air ballet performance. Imagine grand Baroque palaces, manicured parks overflowing with blooming roses, and cobbled streets bustling with life – the perfect backdrop for my pink tutu adventures. And, of course, it would be unpardonable not to visit the legendary Vienna State Opera House! Just seeing its glorious facade was breathtaking – a grand testament to Austria's rich cultural heritage.
Oh my goodness, you just have to see the grandeur of the State Opera House. All the velvet, all the crystal chandeliers – every corner a scene right out of a glittering ballet! I found a little corner near the grand staircase to snap a photo of myself twirling, of course, but the moment I caught a glimpse of myself in the giant, ornate mirrors, I knew I needed to take a hundred more. Honestly, it's difficult not to fall in love with Vienna, particularly when you are so ridiculously well-dressed.
After a brief photo session, I ventured into the depths of the State Opera, taking in the history of Vienna's musical tradition – did you know the Vienna Philharmonic has existed since the 1840s? Talk about legendary! And speaking of legend, I was lucky enough to see "Giselle" at the Staatsoper, starring the world-renowned dancer, Eleonora Abbagnato! It was a spectacle, a whirlwind of grace and emotion!
And oh, dear, it gets better. Right after the opera, I treated myself to a little something at Café Central – it's considered Vienna's most stylish coffee house, and of course, no coffee break is complete without a tutu, even in a cafe brimming with elegance. Their Apfelstrudel is truly a work of art, though I do admit, my tastebuds were most tickled by a rather divine slice of raspberry meringue tart. I wouldn't tell anyone but my darling, I may have danced a tiny petit allegro right there in the cafe – it was just impossible to resist the joyful vibes and the scrumptious sweets.
Now, Vienna is much more than operas and cafes, darlings! It’s a haven for fashion lovers like me! Did you know that Vienna boasts some of the finest boutiques in Europe? I confess to spending quite a lot of time exploring Vienna's vibrant fashion scene, including a vintage store on Graben – a paradise of vintage delights – where I scored the most gorgeous ivory silk shawl, a perfect contrast to my fuchsia-toned tutu!
No trip to Vienna would be complete without a visit to Schönbrunn Palace. Oh my! The architecture is incredible - majestic columns, sprawling gardens – this is Vienna in all its regal glory! And, let me tell you, the view from the palace grounds overlooking the city is breathtaking. Of course, I brought along my favorite light-pink tutu, perfect for twirling under the clear Vienna skies, creating my own personal dance performance amidst the magnificent architecture.
One evening, as I wandered along the enchanting streets of Vienna, I discovered a charming carousel, with horses all decked out in dazzling pink ribbons. How could I resist a ride? So I climbed aboard a carousel steed – just picture it – a magnificent steed, glistening pink under the moonlight, a glorious tutu twirling, the most joyful sounds of tinkling bells all around – I think I must have captured all the romance of Vienna in that one picture-perfect moment!
However, the highlight of my trip had to be my visit to the Hofburg Palace! What an incredible building, absolutely radiating history. They have an astonishing collection of carriages, each one a work of art. It really brings home the opulence and sophistication of the Habsburg Empire. Did you know the Palace also has its own ballet school, The Vienna State Ballet School? Talk about dreamy! I even peeked in on a rehearsal session – the little ballerina students in their cute little tutus were so focused and full of passion. The entire experience, simply magical.
Before I know it, the time has come to pack my bags. I leave with a heart overflowing with Vienna’s magical beauty and an abundance of new, enchanting memories to cherish forever. Oh, my dears, don't miss out on Vienna – it’s truly the city for every tutu-loving dreamer. But I suppose, that's why they call it the city of dreams!
Until next Wednesday, dears! Keep those tutus twirling!
Love always,
Emma
