Pink Tutu Vienna - Post 566 - 08 March 2006

Hello my lovely lot,

It's Wednesday, so you know what that means - time for another Pink Tutu Vienna adventure! I'm bubbling over with excitement today because this week has been absolutely jam-packed with ballerina-worthy experiences, from the grand old ballet theatres of Vienna to the elegant boutiques tucked away in its cobbled side streets. I just have to share it all with you, so grab your favourite pink tutu (and perhaps a cuppa!) and get comfy, because we're going on a girly trip.

This week's journey began with a ballet performance on Monday - Swan Lake at the magnificent Vienna State Opera. Honestly, the theatre itself is breathtaking! All marble and chandeliers and plush velvet seating, like something straight out of a fairy tale. The performance was truly enchanting, with such incredible artistry and athleticism from the dancers. They floated across the stage, their costumes glittering like spun sugar. The music, of course, was phenomenal, those soaring Tchaikovsky melodies just take you on an emotional rollercoaster.

Afterwards, I wandered through the charming streets of the inner city, enjoying the Viennese atmosphere. Itโ€™s so magical walking through these historic squares, filled with beautifully-preserved buildings and cobblestone streets. The old coffee houses, like a timeless vignette from another era, are just my cup of tea (or should I say, Viennese coffee!). I'm telling you, Vienna is a city of pure beauty, so I just had to indulge in a spot of retail therapy at one of the stylish boutiques, buying the perfect, rosy pink cashmere scarf for my travelling tutu-clad adventures.

Speaking of tutus, I made a pilgrimage on Tuesday to the Austrian National Library, which houses an absolutely incredible collection of historical ballet and fashion books. They even had a room devoted to the history of the tutu! From its humble origins in the late 1700s to its dramatic transformations through the centuries, the tutu truly is a work of art. They have the most magnificent drawings and photographs - I got to hold an original ballet sketch by Degas, it was absolutely stunning. This gave me a whole new appreciation for the artistry of this graceful garment!

Oh, and wouldn't you know it, Vienna is home to the most exquisite shops selling ballerina shoes! I picked up the most beautiful pair, handmade with the softest, silkiest leather. They are the perfect colour - a delicate shade of rose, of course!

On Wednesday morning, I found a quaint horse-drawn carriage to explore Vienna. Honestly, it's like stepping into a romantic fairytale! As I gently clip clopped through the streets, past grand palaces and shimmering gardens, I couldn't help but imagine the stories these ancient walls could tell. It was truly magical!

After lunch in the city's most enchanting little tearoom - adorned with a cascade of pink roses, of course - I spent the afternoon immersed in Viennese culture at a museum devoted to the city's fascinating history of music and opera. The exhibits were phenomenal! There were instruments from centuries ago, original costumes from iconic operas, even letters handwritten by legendary composers.

The day culminated in a ballet class at a stunningly grand old dance studio in the city centre. The space is beautifully appointed with gorgeous wooden floors and antique mirrors that reflect the graceful movements of the dancers. The class was truly uplifting. All the women there were so welcoming, we laughed and chatted and shared our love for the art of dance. Honestly, there's nothing like the feeling of stretching and spinning, my tutu flowing around me. It was absolutely exhilarating.

As I sit here, in my cosy hotel room overlooking the enchanting city, I can't help but reflect on what a magical day it's been. It feels so right to be in a city that breathes elegance and artistic beauty.

That's all for now, darling. My pink tutu needs a good night's sleep after a whirlwind day of waltzing and whimsy. Until next Wednesday, keep dancing to the tune of life and remember - a pink tutu makes everything brighter!

Your Emma,

xx
