Post Number 636: A Pink Tutu Pilgrimage to Vienna, the Waltz Capital of the World! 🩰 🇦🇹

Hello my lovely readers! It's Emma, your favourite pink tutu-wearing ballerina, writing to you live from Vienna, Austria, the city of waltzes, coffee, and glorious architecture. Today is Wednesday, July 11th, and, like clockwork, I'm bringing you a brand new blog post from the heart of Europe.

This week has been an absolute whirlwind! Imagine a city that's brimming with history, adorned with stunning palaces and parks, and where the very air seems to whisper of Mozart and Strauss. Vienna, you have truly stolen my heart.

Train Travels & A Whirlwind of Pink

I arrived here by train, of course! There's something utterly romantic about chugging through the countryside, a vintage travel romance complete with fluffy, powder-pink luggage and a pair of ballet shoes peeping out of my tote bag. The landscape unfolded in a glorious blur of verdant fields and quaint towns, perfectly embodying the image I have of Austria.

As soon as I stepped onto the platform, I felt Vienna beckoning me towards its cultural delights. I simply couldn't wait to explore. Firstly, I found myself at a delightful little shop bursting with the most incredible vintage clothing. I picked up a gorgeous silk scarf and a stunning, shimmering silver belt to complete my tutu ensemble. This vintage haven became my personal playground; there was something absolutely magical about rifling through racks of forgotten fashion, finding treasures waiting to be re-worn.

My hotel is just steps away from the State Opera House, so every morning I awake to the promise of exquisite artistry. Today, I decided to start my day by venturing into this grand opera house and taking in a bit of theatrical history.

Ballet at the State Opera House:

The State Opera House, a true masterpiece of architecture and opulence, welcomed me with open arms. Its history stretches back to the 18th century, with grand marble halls and opulent gilded rooms, every corner breathing with cultural history. I spent some time marveling at its majesty, feeling a surge of inspiration for all things dance.

A Royal Affair & a Ballroom Ballroom Dance:

Vienna's most famous ballet company, the Vienna State Opera Ballet, has its headquarters in this historic building. This world-renowned group has been entertaining audiences for centuries, and today, the stars of the ballet stage come from every corner of the world to dance their hearts out in the Viennese halls.

In the evening, I am off to experience the Hofburg Imperial Palace. The very name conjures up a regal ambiance, steeped in history and extravagance. I can’t wait to wander the halls where emperors once walked, admire the imperial apartments and explore the treasury! My Tutu will look magnificent against the backdrop of gold and finery!

Of course, no trip to Vienna is complete without a dance lesson, or at the very least, a lesson in waltzing. There's no better place to embrace the grace of the waltz than in this city of swirling skirts and romantic music. I found a small ballet school tucked away in a quiet corner, their walls adorned with framed portraits of bygone ballerinas. As soon as I stepped inside, the aroma of floor polish and the melody of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake filled the air. I had to sign up immediately. The teacher was delightful; she taught me the steps and turns with an almost poetic grace, reminding me of the stories embedded within the waltz and its evolution.

Ballet's Sweet & Savoury Treats: Cake and Kitsch

And if you think I only indulge in cultural highbrow experiences, you are very much mistaken! Vienna is a city for all the senses. And I simply cannot resist a good dose of coffee and cake. One of my favourites is Sachertorte, a delicious chocolate cake named after Franz Sacher, a talented baker who created this delectable confection in the early 19th century. A cup of strong Viennese coffee with a slice of Sachertorte is my ideal way to take a break between my cultural forays. The cake is a delightful combination of sweetness and a little bitterness that perfectly complements the smooth taste of Viennese coffee. It's pure, decadence, a testament to the city's love of refined luxury and delicious pleasures.

While I enjoy my favourite indulgence, I often take time to stop and browse through Vienna’s charming shops, finding small boutiques selling the most beautiful clothing, unique trinkets, and those adorable pink tutus, of course! The stores are bursting with style and charm, offering treasures just waiting to be discovered. And how can I resist a pretty pink bow, a new pair of ballerina flats or even a tiny porcelain pink tutu for my miniature collection.

I even managed to squeeze in a visit to Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna's grandest palace and former imperial summer residence. The beautiful gardens are full of stunning blooms, fountains and the Vienna Zoo. This fairytale palace with its lush green grounds, stunning interiors, and rich history is simply breathtaking.

Vienna is the most charming city I've visited so far, a beautiful blend of art, culture, music, architecture, fashion and a touch of magical fairy tale charm! It's definitely on my list of favourite places in the world, and I already long to return!
