Vienna Calling! (Post #799)

Wednesday 25th August 2010

Oh, Vienna! How I have been dreaming of this city, of waltzing through the streets with a swirling pink tutu and feeling like a character in a fairytale. It's true, sometimes my dreams come true, and I'm so grateful to be here at last, with a suitcase overflowing with tutus (pink, naturally) and a heart bursting with excitement.

I know, I know, some of you might be thinking "Tutus in Vienna? Isn't that a little... over the top?" But darling, don't be so shy! Tutues aren't just for the stage anymore, they're for everywhere, for everyone, and I'm on a mission to prove it. From the cobbled streets of Derby to the grand squares of Vienna, my pink tutu is a beacon of joy and femininity, a reminder that life's too short to be anything but fabulous.

The train journey here was a dream. As we zoomed through the Austrian countryside, the sun dappled through the windows and I felt my spirit lift with every mile. You wouldn't believe the compliments I got from other passengers ā€“ I swear, I could practically hear the "Oooh! How lovely!" and "It's so stylish!" as I walked by in my latest creation, a breathtaking tulle confection of hot pink with delicate layers of blush and lilac ruffles. A truly spectacular combination of feminine and flamboyant!

Stepping onto Viennese Soil

And oh my, the first thing that struck me about Vienna is how... charming it is! It's like a postcard sprung to life. Everywhere you look there are graceful buildings, parks overflowing with flowers, and an air of relaxed elegance. The locals, even in the middle of August heat, look simply divine! The ladies are effortlessly chic, their fashion impeccable, and the gentlemen, oh the gentlemen! So debonair in their linen suits and straw hats. Honestly, I felt a little out of place, and yes, I did have a touch of tutu envy.

But then, as I twirled through the grand Hotel Imperial, I realised it's my flair, my "I'm-a-ballerina-and-I-love-tutu-life" energy, that sets me apart. And besides, who wouldn't want a little bit of tutu joy in their day?

Shopping Spree!

This trip, as always, wouldn't be complete without a thorough exploration of the shops. Now, Vienna's fashion scene is truly something else, it's full of sophistication, elegance, and - gasp! - even a hint of whimsy that's right up my street.

I absolutely must show you this fabulous vintage boutique I found nestled amongst the traditional shops near Stephansplatz. It's like a secret haven for fabulous ladies and their even more fabulous fashion. Imagine antique mirrors reflecting satin dresses in shades of emerald and gold, overflowing shelves packed with lace gloves, feather boas, and hats in a riot of colours... and oh, the shoes! Heavenly heels, exquisite flats, and even a pair of patent leather ballet shoes I couldn't resist! (The red was so perfect for a cheeky little Viennese waltz!)

But honestly, what really got my heart fluttering was a beautiful velvet cloak, adorned with intricate embroidery and gleaming with metallic thread. This is the kind of garment that whispers "ballet dancer" without actually shouting it. My inner ballerina is going to adore twirling around Vienna in this magnificent cloak, the wind catching its velvet edges, the sparkle reflecting off the cityscape... pure magic, darling!

A Delicious Waltz of Taste

I wouldn't be true to myself if I didn't share my favourite food experiences with you. After a day of shopping, what could be more delightful than a creamy Viennese Sachertorte, savoured at a cafĆ© filled with the aroma of coffee and conversation? The chocolate richness, the fluffy texture, the whisper of apricot jam - divine! And a glass of local GrĆ¼ner Veltliner to cut through the sweetness, making every bite even more heavenly!

Of course, the Viennese have a way with a traditional Schnitzel as well, and I just had to try the classic "Wiener Schnitzel", the one they're famous for. Crispy, juicy, tenderā€¦ honestly, it's the kind of dish that deserves a twirl and a curtsey! And speaking of dancing, did you know Vienna's legendary Viennese waltz originated here in the 18th century? Imagine the swirling tutus and elegant gowns, the music soaring through grand ballrooms, the scent of perfume and laughter filling the air! Just thinking about it makes me want to put on my most opulent tutu and practice some waltzing moves!

History in a Tutu

And while I'm on the topic of the past, let's talk about history! Vienna has it in spades, and a fascinating kind of history that brings tutus to mind. Did you know the waltz, which I find so irresistibly charming and elegant, was actually considered scandalous in the 1700s? But imagine how spectacular it must have looked on the dance floor - twirling dancers, fluttering tulle, a captivating spectacle that even conservative souls had to acknowledge!

Then there's the story of the Vienna Opera House. What a masterpiece! This grand architectural marvel opened in 1869, just in time to showcase the era's fascination with all things "grand", and believe me, the opera productions were no exception. They were opulent affairs, with stunning costumes, glittering sets, and of course, ballerinas dancing their hearts out in glorious tutus. It truly was the Golden Age of ballet!

A Touch of Ballerina Magic

And what's a ballerina trip without a little dose of magic, right? That's why I'm incredibly excited to tell you that Iā€™m booked to see ā€œGiselleā€ at the Vienna State Opera tomorrow night! The tale of a tragic love story and a heartbroken ballerina, a masterpiece by the great Adolphe Adam. I can already imagine the breathtaking sets, the powerful music, the haunting choreography... I may have already chosen my most elaborate, dazzling, romantic pink tutu for this occasion, too! (Donā€™t worry, Iā€™ll tell you all about it next week!)

Speaking of ballet, I canā€™t leave Vienna without taking a class. This city has such a deep-rooted ballet tradition, and I'm longing to dance in those hallowed halls where generations of ballerinas have pirouetted, a legacy of beauty and grace Iā€™m thrilled to be a part of. The very air seems to hum with the rhythmic echoes of pirouettes, tendus, and jetĆ©s!

Vienna, you have captivated me with your charm, your culture, and yes, even your impeccable style. Thank you for a fantastic few days filled with beauty, inspiration, and an insatiable desire to twirl. Stay tuned, because Iā€™m only just getting startedā€¦ thereā€™s much more to see and dance through, and of course, share with you, dear reader.

Stay lovely,

Emma
