Pink Tutu Vienna: Post #920 - December 19th, 2012

Dearest readers,

It's Wednesday, which means it's time for my weekly Vienna adventures on Pink Tutu Vienna! Today I'm feeling exceptionally cheery - not only is it the most wonderful time of the year, it's also the day I get to share my latest escapade with you. Let's just say Vienna's been living up to its reputation for beauty, and my inner ballerina has been doing a pirouette of pure joy!

As always, my trip started with a bit of sartorial inspiration. This week, I've been particularly captivated by the vibrant colours of the Vienna Christmas markets. Think fiery red gingerbread stalls, glistening gold Christmas ornaments, and that soft, magical glow from strings of twinkling lights. Inspired by this festive spirit, I've been rocking my new crimson-coloured tutu, teamed with a white faux-fur jacket. The perfect outfit for strolling through the city's enchanting squares and soaking up the Christmas magic.

My week has been filled with a charming mix of cultural delights and fairytale adventures.

A Viennese Waltz With the Horses

I kicked things off with a visit to the Spanish Riding School, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was a bit like stepping into a time machine, with its elegant, 18th-century grandeur. You can just imagine the waltzing ladies and dapper gentlemen who graced these halls in times gone by. Seeing the Lipizzaner stallions perform their incredible dance was nothing short of mesmerising - a whirlwind of grace and strength, each move flowing seamlessly into the next. The horses themselves are pure elegance, their snowy white coats contrasting with the black attire of the riders. And the sound of their hooves against the wooden floor, echoing through the grand hall, was truly captivating.

After the show, I wandered through the stable courtyard, enchanted by the horses' peaceful air. It felt surreal, being so close to these legendary creatures that are part of Vienna's very soul. And let's not forget the "Schimmel" (grey horses), absolutely beautiful! You simply have to admire their beauty! I even found myself chatting with one of the stable lads, who shared a story of his grandfather's own involvement with the Riding School. The whole experience was steeped in history and beauty. It really was a treat for the soul.

A Feast for the Eyes and Tummy

No trip to Vienna is complete without indulging in the city's exquisite culinary offerings. And where better to start than the Naschmarkt? This vibrant market, with its stalls brimming with fresh produce, spices, and cheeses, is a treat for all the senses. I treated myself to a delightful "Käsekrainer" - a Viennese sausage filled with cheese, oh so delicious! Then I headed to the "Wurstelstand", Vienna's famous "sausage stall", for a comforting hot dog. It felt truly authentic. But it wasn't just about the food, it was the atmosphere, the sights and sounds, the people going about their daily routine - I loved every minute of it!

Dance in the City

Of course, being in Vienna meant taking in some incredible dance performances. This week I witnessed a captivating performance of Swan Lake at the Vienna State Opera! The grandeur of the Opera House is nothing short of breathtaking. The gold and red décor is absolutely stunning, making it the perfect backdrop for a dramatic and elegant ballet like Swan Lake. I found myself completely enthralled by the dancers’ graceful movements and the dramatic story that unfolded on stage. Each pirouette, each leap felt like an invitation to step into another world of magic and emotion. The whole performance left me feeling filled with a sense of awe and wonder. It really was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

A Waltz With the City

But it wasn't all ballet and opera this week. I also took a leisurely walk along the Ringstrasse , Vienna's iconic ring road. I admired the stunning buildings – from the grand Opera House to the stately Parliament Building. Each structure a monument to the city's rich history. But the true heart of Vienna for me is in its charming cafes. So I treated myself to a slice of Sachertorte with a pot of strong coffee at Café Central – a classic Viennese cafe, complete with marble tables, ornate ceilings and an air of historical charm.

You see, my journey to Vienna is about so much more than just a dance performance. It's about exploring, soaking in the city's rich history, savouring its exquisite food and coffee, and letting the elegant beauty of Vienna work its magic on my senses.

Vienna, you’re stealing my heart!

I have so much more to share from this adventure, so keep your eyes peeled for more Pink Tutu Vienna adventures!

Until next week, darlings,

Yours truly,

Emma xx
