Dearest readers,
As the steam engine of the Orient Express chugged to a halt in Vienna's grand Hauptbahnhof, my heart was practically skipping a beat. I've dreamed of this city, of its rich musical heritage and stunning architecture, for as long as I can remember! And wouldn't you know it, Vienna also boasts a magnificent ballet scene, with the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Ballet, both renowned for their classical artistry. It’s simply a dream come true for a ballet-obsessed lass like myself.
My trusty pink tutu is already prepped for a flurry of enchanting performances – I can't wait to twirl under the sparkling chandeliers of the Vienna State Opera House!
The carriage ride from the station to my charming hotel was a delight in itself. The driver, a friendly fellow named Franz, even let me try on his dashing peaked cap for a photo – the horse was awfully intrigued, perhaps sensing the pink tulle-clad wonder seated beside him!
Speaking of pink tulle, you'd be amazed at the selection of pretty fabrics here in Vienna. I'm particularly smitten with a delicate pale pink silk I saw in a little boutique in the Altstadt - just imagine it billowing and swishing as I pirouette! My mind is already bursting with ideas for a new creation for the Pink Tutu collection – something with a hint of Austrian charm and elegance.
Yesterday, I had a truly inspiring morning at the Vienna State Opera House. Not only did I watch the captivating 'Swan Lake' – oh, those stunning costumes and incredible athleticism! - but I also had the privilege of chatting with the principal dancer, a kind gentleman named Stefan. We spoke about the history of the Vienna Ballet and the dedication it takes to perfect such intricate steps. His stories about the legendary dancers who have graced this stage inspired me to delve deeper into the world of ballet history.
In the afternoon, I explored the opulent Palais Liechtenstein, the palatial residence of the aristocratic Liechtenstein family. The sheer beauty of the palace interiors and gardens left me breathless.
As evening approached, I wandered through the cobblestone streets, marveling at the enchanting glow of the street lamps and the bustling Viennese nightlife. Vienna, you have already stolen my heart with your elegant charm and captivating atmosphere.
And what would a trip to the city of waltz be without indulging in the local delicacies? Today, I treated myself to a scrumptious Sachertorte – a decadent chocolate cake filled with apricot jam – and a strong cup of Viennese coffee at the Cafe Central. Truly the perfect way to finish a whirlwind day.
What I'm looking forward to in Vienna:
- Watching a ballet performance at the Vienna State Opera,
- Exploring the Vienna Ballet museum and its fascinating archives,
- Taking a dance class at one of the local ballet schools,
- Shopping for inspiration in the city's charming boutiques,
- Wandering through the majestic Schönbrunn Palace and gardens,
- Experiencing the vibrant street performers who fill the city streets with music.
What’s on today, January 21st:
- The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is performing Strauss’ 'Die Fledermaus' at the Musikverein – I’m not surprised they sold out, a once-in-a-lifetime performance!
- At the Museum of Art History (Kunsthistorisches Museum), there’s a stunning exhibition dedicated to the Baroque period featuring the work of Italian artist, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio – oh, how I wish I had a little more time to visit museums during my trip, but time is of the essence.

P.S. Did you know, that tutu history goes all the way back to the 1830s? Marie Taglioni was one of the first dancers to wear what was known as a ‘tutu à la Française,’ or, a Romantic tutu - made from several layers of delicate tulle! Oh, if only she had donned a pink tutu – perhaps my trip will inspire some Viennese ballet to make that change!
