Vienna, Vienna, where have you been all my life? #1070
Hello darlings, and welcome to this week's instalment of the Pink Tutu Vienna blog, arriving fresh on a Wednesday, as per usual! It's me, your favourite pink-loving, tutu-wearing, ballet-obsessed blogger, Emma, bringing you a whirl through the most charming and elegant city in all of Europe – Vienna!
Before we delve into the sights and sounds of this stunning capital, let's have a quick chat about the journey itself. I, as always, chose to travel in style. No planes for this ballerina – it was a train trip all the way! There's just something about that rhythmic rocking, the glimpses of countryside flying by, and the sheer joy of travelling by rail that sets my soul soaring.
Vienna, oh Vienna, what can I say about you that hasn't already been said a thousand times? It's like stepping into a fairytale. You know, one with cobbled streets, grand buildings with opulent gold trimmings, and that delicious scent of coffee and pastries wafting through the air. Oh, and don't even get me started on the horse-drawn carriages! You can spot them pulling tourists through the heart of the city – pure fairytale magic, and the perfect backdrop for my ever-so-pink outfit!
A Ballerina's Paradise
For me, however, the magic truly kicked in the moment I entered the hallowed halls of the Vienna State Opera House. Imagine, darling, my beautiful, shimmering pink tutu swirling beneath the chandeliers as I wandered through the ornate corridors. You can almost feel the history radiating off the walls! The grand staircases, the exquisite tapestries, the echoing silence, it was like walking through time! I swear I heard a ghostly melody flitting in the air – the echoes of past operas and ballets, I believe.
Thankfully, the ghost stories were limited to my overactive imagination. The opera house itself is vibrant and bustling, bursting with music, life, and yes, even fashion! I spent a gloriously unproductive morning scouring the shops for the perfect piece of attire to wear to the show that evening – La Bohème, a favourite of mine, featuring the iconic soprano role, Mimì. A new feathered hat, adorned with pink velvet roses, found its way into my suitcase alongside a charming pair of pearl-studded gloves, a classic but undeniably elegant addition to any ballerina's wardrobe!
The performance was simply exquisite. I spent much of it with tears welling in my eyes. La Bohème has that magical effect on me; it always brings a knot of emotion and an appreciation for the beauty of music, drama, and storytelling. As the curtain descended, the applause roared through the auditorium, a glorious symphony of celebration and gratitude for a masterpiece perfectly realised.
Coffee, Cake, and Culture
But Vienna isn't only about grand operas and shimmering ballets. One cannot talk about this city without mentioning its rich coffee culture! From charming cafes spilling onto cobblestone sidewalks to grand old institutions with thick, plush armchairs and ornate ceilings, coffee permeates Vienna's very essence. The rich aroma itself, a blend of roasted beans and sugar, is almost enough to make you want to sing. Almost!
Now, my darling, no trip to Vienna is complete without an indulgence in the glorious Sachertorte. I had the pleasure of sinking my teeth into the legendary delicacy at the original Sacher Hotel. Let me tell you, it was a masterpiece! The deep chocolate, the perfect layer of apricot jam, and the divine, melt-in-your-mouth buttercream… sigh. Honestly, a sheer slice of heavenly perfection!
Ballet on the Streets
Of course, a ballerina cannot visit Vienna without paying her respects to its legendary ballet history! This city gave birth to ballet giants such as Rudolf Nureyev and Karlheinz Böhm. There are ballets performed daily, and walking down any street, one can almost feel the history dancing beneath one's feet! I, for one, had the pleasure of attending an impromptu ballet street performance right in the heart of the city. You see, I simply cannot resist any opportunity to watch dance, even if it's just a group of youngsters, fresh out of ballet school, putting their heart and soul into the steps!
Pink Tutu Takeover?
I was determined to leave my own little pink tutu mark on Vienna. So, naturally, I put on my brightest pink tutu and strutted my stuff through the city centre. Heads turned, smiles appeared, and the occasional delighted "Oh my!" drifted into the air. One little girl, perhaps seven years old, gasped with glee, pointing at my tutu and declaring it "the most beautiful thing ever!" You can bet your bottom dollar I received the warmest hug in return! That, darlings, is the beauty of ballet – it brings joy to people from all walks of life!
But the true highlight was yet to come! You see, Vienna holds an annual "Vienna Ball" season, a series of formal events with grand balls held across the city. Imagine, darling, the chance to swirl through elegant dance halls, beneath crystal chandeliers, wearing a gloriously pink tutu, all while surrounded by the most exquisitely dressed ladies and gentlemen Vienna has to offer! I practically did cartwheels at the prospect. I'm not talking about any tutu though – I'm thinking tulle fit for royalty, layered, with a soft touch of sparkle. Oh, my darling, my imagination is going wild!
So, as I head towards the station, leaving this enchanting city behind for the moment, one thing is for sure: I will be back! My love for this magical city runs deep, fuelled by the thrill of performance, the joy of exploration, and the simple, elegant joy of pink!
Until next week, darling! Stay pink and stay sparkly!
