Pink Tutu Vienna: Post #1167 – A Waltz Through Whimsy

Oh darling, I'm positively buzzing with excitement to tell you all about my recent trip to Vienna! It’s been a whirlwind of waltzes, pastries, and oh so much pink (of course).

It's a little known fact, but I, Emma, am not just a pink-tutu-clad ballerina – I'm also a rather dedicated travel enthusiast. I've danced my way across the globe, my tutu a trusty travel companion, always capturing the essence of every destination. And Vienna, my darlings, is nothing short of a fairy tale.

I must admit, Vienna always felt like a dream. Perhaps it was the music, the grand architecture, or the stories of emperors and empresses, but there's an undeniable magic woven into the very fabric of this city. And it’s truly no surprise, it's been a major centre for dance for centuries, with an unbelievably rich history of ballet. This weekend, my inner ballerina went absolutely wild, taking in as many performances, exhibitions, and ballet-related activities as my tulle skirt could accommodate.

I arrived on Friday afternoon, fresh from a particularly energetic performance at a ballet gala in my beloved Derbyshire. The train journey was delightful, filled with views of the lush countryside, and punctuated by an irresistible cuppa (Earl Grey, naturally, with a splash of milk) from the on-board trolley. Nothing like a bit of traditional British comfort in the heart of Europe, wouldn’t you agree?

My hotel was, naturally, chosen for its grandeur. The reception, with its intricate chandeliers and marbled floors, felt straight out of a waltzing waltz! My room was an absolute dream, complete with a plush velvet chaise lounge perfect for lounging in a beautiful pale pink, my favourite shade.

Once settled in, I eagerly ventured out to explore the city. My first stop, the grand Hofburg Palace, was an absolute treat. It’s the embodiment of history and splendour. I even imagined myself waltzing with a handsome prince in the palace gardens! Then, it was on to the Spanish Riding School, the oldest and most famous riding school in the world. Seeing the majestic Lipizzan horses perform was a spectacle that left me breathless. The precision and grace of their movements are just phenomenal. You know, I've been wanting to learn to ride since I was a little girl and this just ignited the fire in me. Perhaps I should make a pilgrimage to a local riding school soon! Just imagine: me, a tutu-wearing equestrian - quite the picture, wouldn't you say?

Of course, no trip to Vienna would be complete without a visit to the Schönbrunn Palace. I actually arrived just in time for the Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert. The air was filled with beautiful melodies, the sun setting behind the grand façade of the palace – just breathtaking. The performance was magical, making the experience even more poignant, and I confess I even shed a tear. It felt like stepping into a scene from my favourite ballet, “Swan Lake”!

No waltz through Vienna would be complete without a healthy dose of Schnitzel and Sachertorte! I must say, these Austrian culinary staples are truly delightful. I savored the schnitzel with a side of delicious potatoes, all while pondering the meaning of life and, naturally, the future of tutus in the world.

And speaking of tutus, I absolutely had to make a stop at the magnificent Vienna State Opera House. It is the absolute dream setting for a performance of classic ballets. It’s simply impossible not to feel swept away by the grandeur and magic of this place. Sadly, they weren’t performing any ballets while I was there but they do host ballet performances frequently, so maybe I'll return for another weekend escape soon!

In the afternoon, I chanced upon a local street performance of modern ballet. You know, I love both traditional and contemporary styles. The passion and skill of the dancers truly showcased the beauty of the art form. I particularly enjoyed their interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s "Swan Lake" using a minimalist but incredibly impactful set and costumes.

Vienna has also stolen a place in my heart with its charming cafes and delightful pastries. I've been living on a diet of Wiener Melange (Vienna Coffee) and Sachertorte since I arrived! I truly believe they have a certain "je ne sais quoi."

While my trip was fleeting, it's an experience I will never forget. Vienna is a city that truly captures the essence of dance and romance. It’s the place to immerse yourself in the world of classical ballet.

You know, I'm so grateful for my travels and that I'm able to see the world through a tutu-tinted lens. From the streets of Vienna to the dance stages of London, every step, every pirouette, is a celebration of the art and wonder that surround us.

But now it’s time for me to head back to my beloved Derbyshire! Until next week, darling, do try to find time for some pirouettes of your own. And remember: the world looks a little bit brighter in a pink tutu!

Until next Wednesday!

Much love,

Emma
