Hello, my darlings! This week has been a delightful blur of ballet, bangers and, of course, breathtaking Vienna. As I pen this, sitting with a steaming mug of Viennese coffee (more sugar than caffeine, as is my way!), my trusty tutu rests upon a vintage velvet chair beside me, watching over my every word. It’s been a while since my last post, as this past week has been jam-packed with delights, from grand theatres to hidden cafes and everything pink in between.
Now, for you lucky ducks who have yet to catch a glimpse of this enchanting city, let me paint you a picture: Think cobbled streets echoing with the clip-clop of horse-drawn carriages, impossibly ornate architecture bursting with gold leaf and an air of old-world charm that simply sweeps you off your feet. And that's not even considering the delectable food (my waistline might be a bit wider than usual by the time I leave!), the melodious sounds of the city's famous orchestras, or the stunning museums filled with masterpieces that could inspire a thousand tutus!
A Symphony of Style: The City's Heartbeat
As a girl who loves nothing more than a good waltz or a dazzling performance, Vienna feels like coming home. I arrived by train, of course (such an elegant way to travel!), my pink tulle swishing against the window as we snaked our way through the countryside. My heart quickened as we rolled into the station, Vienna’s iconic architecture rising against the hazy skyline. I’d never felt such a potent mixture of anticipation and sheer excitement!
Immediately upon my arrival, I made my way to the glorious Wiener Staatsoper, Vienna's grand opera house. The building itself is a stunning example of neo-classical design, its grandeur immediately capturing my imagination. Inside, the sheer opulence took my breath away. Golden chandeliers glimmered, gilded ornamentation graced every corner, and the velvety plush seats were a dream to sink into. I've never seen such lavish ornamentation! And then, there was the performance! A sumptuous production of “Giselle” - so dramatic, so breathtaking! My little heart just couldn’t cope! I’m quite sure I could have danced all night, but then who would have written about this incredible journey?
The next morning, I woke with a renewed sense of energy and the familiar ache of wanting to twirl through the streets in a swirl of pink tulle!
Dancing in Vienna: A Ballet Journey
And twirl I did! First stop - the legendary Vienna State Ballet school. Their training methods are rigorous, but they also possess a distinct focus on musicality and elegance. Their class was pure joy - disciplined, expressive, and overflowing with passion. Watching these young talents was incredibly inspiring. I felt a tiny bit of my younger self watching, full of admiration and yearning to join the pirouette party! The beautiful grace of their movement, the crispness of their steps, it was enough to make even this veteran tutu-wearer blush with pride.
For an afternoon treat, I wandered down to a charming local shop brimming with tutus in every colour imaginable, naturally finding my favourite shade amongst the array! This shop had been tucked away for over 40 years, seemingly oblivious to the world outside. Its owner, a darling old lady, showed me all the tricks of the trade, from the history of tutus to how to create the perfect drape and how to maintain their airy grace. I bought, of course, not one, but two - a simple blush pink for everyday and a vibrant magenta with a splash of gold sparkle, for more special occasions. (It's best to be prepared, after all!)
A Parisian Pink Dream: Exploring the City's Chic Side
With a twinkle in my eye and my new pink ballet beauties fluttering at my heels, I spent the rest of the afternoon shopping. My heart fluttered with every garment that tickled my fancy, but let's be honest - no Parisian experience is complete without some Chanel. Stepping inside the store felt like walking into a whimsical pink cloud. The signature black and white motif felt sleek and chic, juxtaposing the opulent extravagance of the rest of Vienna's style, while still embracing that essential feminine touch.
As the evening drew near, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction that only comes from a day well-spent, fuelled by elegant dresses, decadent pastries and, most importantly, pink tulle. My new friends from the ballet school and I (who knew finding friends with an appreciation for all things pink and ballet would be so easy?) headed out for a delightful evening at the theatre, a stunning performance of “The Nutcracker”. It’s almost enough to make you forget how the sugarplums dance with glee - but it’s good to have an excuse to splurge on gingerbread and coffee, don’t you think?
The Pink Tutu Journey Continues...
With a final twirl in my magenta-and-gold tutu (it sparkles like the city itself!), I’ll bid you adieu for now.
But be sure to check back next Wednesday, my loves, for more #PinkTutuVienna tales.
Until then, wear a tutu, spread joy, and don’t forget to indulge in the delicious side of life!
Yours in pink,
Emma
