Vienna Calling! - A Pink Tutu Adventures in the City of Waltz ??

#1666

Dearest readers,

Vienna! It's been calling me like a forgotten melody for months, whispering promises of waltz tunes, coffee house charm, and oh, those divine waltzing horses. I've finally heeded its call and am here, toes tapping in the heart of this elegant city.

Today's the 7th of April, 2027. And, what a glorious Friday it is! This time last week, I was back in the familiar hills of Derbyshire, perfecting a brand new triple pirouette (ahem, it's still in progress) for a forthcoming performance, but now I'm surrounded by golden domes, cobblestone streets, and the melodic strum of Viennese melodies.

Now, a Pink Tutu wouldn't be caught dead in the city without experiencing its history, so of course, we started with a visit to the Schönbrunn Palace - one of the world’s most beautiful Baroque palaces. My dear Pink Tutu, with its generous amount of tulle, actually complimented the palace's elaborate interiors quite well! It reminded me of a forgotten scene from a classic ballet production, except this time, the ballerina was me, pirouetting in the centre of it all!

Speaking of ballets, no trip to Vienna is complete without a performance at the Vienna State Opera. Oh, the elegance, the grandeur, the storytelling...and the tutus! I actually saw three glorious pink tutus gracing the stage tonight. We truly are on the rise, dear readers! It's enough to make even the most seasoned ballerina giddy, trust me.

Of course, a Pink Tutu couldn't resist venturing into Vienna’s famous shopping district. I absolutely had to find myself a new hat - the perfect accessory for a Viennese escapade. (If you’re curious, it's a gloriously oversized velvet number in, what else, a glorious shade of pink!)

Now, let's delve a little into the history that makes Vienna so utterly fascinating:

Vienna was the capital of the mighty Hapsburg Empire. Can you imagine, my darling readers, being the imperial seat of power for almost seven hundred years? What an awe-inspiring legacy! It truly influences every nook and cranny of the city, right down to its majestic architecture.

But here's the thing, darling readers: did you know that tutus themselves actually have ties to Vienna?

Gasp! I know! The ballet world often credits the "classic" tutu – the stiff, cone-shaped tutu we often see in the Swan Lake – to Marie Taglioni in the early 19th century.

But this, my dears, is a story filled with so much more nuance.

Imagine: Vienna, the city of waltzing and dancing, of Strauss and Mozart! It was the epicentre of European dance and ballet during that time. It stands to reason that fashion innovations, such as the evolution of the tutu, were born from this fiery heart.

Yes! That’s right, even Marie Taglioni’s famously iconic tulle was likely a creation of * Viennese fashion.* She would’ve had access to a network of the finest fabric makers and dressmakers during her trips and engagements in Vienna, undoubtedly playing a crucial role in her sartorial decisions.

Of course, fashion and history are complex beasts! It’s near impossible to isolate a singular source. Still, Vienna’s undeniable influence on both should be celebrated, no? It certainly inspired my own exploration and, you guessed it, made me absolutely giddy with the thought of tutus' evolution throughout history!

And speaking of the history of Vienna…

The most popular ballet company in Vienna is, naturally, the Vienna State Ballet – founded in 1753 – the oldest in the world! A long, rich history spanning hundreds of years...now that’s something to marvel at! This makes the Vienna State Ballet a grand, enduring tradition, like a beautiful ballet composition evolving over the centuries.

Imagine all the tutus that have adorned its stages throughout history!

I confess, darling readers, my pink-tutu-inspired mind has been busy imagining a whole collection of vintage tutus from each ballet era...a stunning display of tulle, feather, and historical flourishes. Maybe one day, dear readers, we could see such an exhibition? I shall certainly bring it up to the right people – hopefully a new project awaits for me back in England.

Oh! Now, here's another thing that I absolutely had to do in Vienna: experience a true Viennese horse-drawn carriage ride! It’s the perfect mix of historic charm and elegance. A black stallion pulling a richly decorated carriage...the carriage is a lovely shade of blush, almost the same hue as a new tutu.

Yes, this, darling readers, is the true embodiment of the city. Elegance, grace, history, and a hint of fairytale magic. Vienna's streets are lined with palaces, museums, parks and gardens, which is quite perfect, I’m told, for waltzing or riding through! I felt utterly glamorous!

So, what are my final thoughts on Vienna, dear readers?

This city, it truly feels like stepping into a beautiful, historical dream! Each corner feels steeped in music, history, and an unparalleled sense of elegance. It’s no wonder the city is known for its music and waltz - everything feels orchestrated with such care and beauty. I know that even as I travel onward, a little bit of Vienna’s spirit will follow me, fluttering in my heart and rustling in my tulle.

Vienna, darling readers, is a dream woven of melody, tulle, and memories that stay with you, even as you journey onward. It’s a must for anyone wanting to feel that truly special blend of elegance, history and a whole lot of oomph.

But remember, no matter what you're wearing, keep your spirits high and let Vienna's waltzing magic dance you onward!

Yours always,

Emma (in a Pink Tutu, naturally)
