Hello darlings, it's your favourite tutu-wearing travel bunny Emma here, fresh from a whirlwind week in Vienna! This majestic city, brimming with culture and history, had me waltzing through cobbled streets and mesmerised by baroque architecture. This week's post will be bursting with colourful impressions of the Austrian capital and its ballet scene, of course!
Remember that lovely summer sunshine that Derbyshire was graced with? Well, it’s packed away in a little cloud until autumn apparently because I'm here in Vienna, under a big, beautiful grey sky that has been steadily weeping since my arrival. But even a bit of rain couldn't dampen my spirits, especially since my trip coincides with the annual "Vienna Summer Ballet Festival" – a glorious event that turns the city into a balletic wonderland!
I made my way to Vienna via a comfy train ride from Germany, an enchanting way to see the countryside and arrive with a twinkle in my eye, just in time to witness the ballet show I had been looking forward to.
A Symphony of Dance and Design: "Swan Lake" in Vienna
This evening, I twirled my way into the Vienna State Opera, a grand building that embodies both regal grandeur and elegant artistry. Imagine swirling crystal chandeliers and elaborate frescos; it truly took my breath away! The "Swan Lake" performance was breathtaking, every detail, from the stunning choreography to the delicate tutus, was simply spellbinding. Each dancer embodied the story with such precision and emotion – I almost shed a tear!
While I may be biased (having a slight obsession with ballet!), Vienna is indeed a global centre for the performing arts. The "Summer Ballet Festival" showcased talents from around the world. My evening concluded at the iconic Musikverein concert hall – Vienna’s renowned music venue. Imagine a shimmering golden hall filled with the rich melody of strings and the powerful resonance of percussion – the entire experience was truly moving.
Whimsical Fashion Adventures
Every visit to a new city involves my favourite ritual: a charming wander through local boutiques and vintage shops. In Vienna, I stumbled upon a whimsical hat shop where I found a glorious feather fascinator. It’s going to add a dash of elegance to my wardrobe (just imagine it with a pink tutu, darling!).
A Toast to the Past
As much as I adore shopping, I also find joy in exploring historical treasures. In Vienna, that meant venturing to the majestic Schönbrunn Palace. I felt like a princess waltzing through its grand halls and gardens! A trip through history in one beautiful location. The Austrian imperial past was wonderfully brought to life here, reminding me of the stories woven into ballet's grand history – all about courts and nobles and majestic movements, just like in a fairytale!
Vienna also happens to have some seriously adorable shops - oh, how I adore those charming boutiques with shelves laden with handcrafted treasures. There are tea shops, candy shops and shops filled with exquisite chocolates (chocolate, as you all know, is a true passion!).
And speaking of adorable, I’ve been wearing this absolutely enchanting new pink tutu everywhere I go! I got it in a charming boutique and the little sparkly pink feather embellishments are everything! It’s the perfect way to stand out amongst all the elegant attire in this glamorous city!
On the Track of Horses
On my trip, I found time for a delightful horseback ride through Vienna's beautiful "Prater" park. With the gentle rhythm of hooves beneath me and a breezy Vienna wind whispering through my hair, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of connection with this historic city and the nature that surrounds it. This moment felt a bit like I was starring in a ballet. My lovely grey horse (named Luna!) made such graceful movements - like an equestrian waltz!
Food and Feeling: My Vienna Favourite
Vienna’s culinary scene is a vibrant and varied mix of Austrian tradition and modern flavours. But the dish that stole my heart was the Wiener Schnitzel, a gloriously crispy and golden-fried breaded cutlet, the star of Viennese cuisine! With its delicate crunch and melt-in-your-mouth texture, it made me sigh with delight! And, just like with the Viennese waltz, there is a specific style for preparing and enjoying it, and it was truly an unforgettable experience!

- Dress to Impress: Vienna embraces elegant style and I suggest packing a few tulle dresses or sparkly cardigans!
- Pack a Tutus: Why not try wearing one around town? I assure you you’ll have the most joyful experiences and make friends. (Of course, I have several I pack everywhere I go, a different one for every day.)
Seek Out Ballet Performances: Be it a grand ballet, a ballet street performance or just some balletic moves around the centre - I hope you will dance your way to Vienna and experience the enchanting magic of this historic city through the graceful lens of ballet.
