Hello my lovely tutu-loving friends! It's your favourite pink-tastic ballerina, Emma, bringing you a brand new blog post straight from the heart of Vienna, Austria! This week, I've been absolutely spoilt for choice, dancing my way through charming streets, delving into opulent opera houses, and even indulging in a little tutu-tastic shopping spree. And yes, dear readers, this magical city has definitely lived up to its "City of Dreams" reputation, so buckle up and join me for another fabulous journey, because... it's time to twirl!
This week's trip to Vienna is all about exploring the cultural heritage that oozes from every cobblestone. I simply cannot get enough of this enchanting city's elegant architecture, vibrant artistic scene, and of course, its magnificent dance history! Today I’ll be sharing with you all my favourite experiences so far and offering a little bit of pink-tinted inspiration along the way.
First things first: I arrived in Vienna by train, of course! There’s something so magical about embarking on a grand adventure on these rolling iron steeds. This time, it was a luxurious overnight train from Munich, the journey gliding by with views of picturesque countryside. The soft rumble of the train is like a lullaby, urging you to drift away into a world of dreams, ballet tutus and, of course, my favourite shade of pink.
The moment I stepped onto Vienna’s station platform, I felt a surge of excitement. My senses were overwhelmed with a symphony of sounds: the soft clinking of tram bells, the excited chatter of locals, and even a faint melody of Viennese waltzes floating in the air. As I took my first stroll down a charming side street, it felt like stepping into a scene straight out of a ballet – every building was a meticulously designed backdrop, adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant pastel colours. My favourite shade of pink, naturally!
Vienna is truly a ballet lover's paradise. You can feel its history in every elegant turn, every graceful stride, every performance.
Speaking of performances, I’ve already caught two ballet shows! One at the grand Staatsoper, the iconic Vienna State Opera. Now, the sheer scale of this opera house left me speechless! The intricately gilded interiors, the opulent chandeliers dripping with sparkling crystals… it felt like a scene from a fairy tale. It’s impossible not to be completely enchanted by the magic of this place.
The ballet itself, "Swan Lake," was pure magic. I could feel the history swirling around me as I watched the dancers gracefully transform between graceful swan and fierce black swan, a mesmerising spectacle of beauty and emotion. Even my ballet heart felt a bit envious of these graceful swans, flitting about with their own unique kind of tutu-wear! I must say, even after years of watching ballets, my excitement for each performance doesn't diminish at all, I just get more and more enthralled with the artistry, the story-telling, the power of the body. The fact that my heart thrummed so much as if I were the one taking those graceful leaps and pirouettes - that's the power of ballet, right there.
And talking about the power of ballet, what a blessing that the wonderful Vienna Ballet company also happens to be based in this incredible city! To say that the performers here are incredibly talented is a vast understatement - and a complete cliche! Let’s be real: their incredible athleticism, artistry and grace deserve the most colourful language I can muster to capture their sheer beauty! I caught one of their performances at the Volksoper, a slightly smaller venue but filled with equal amounts of charm and grandeur. This time, the programme included "Don Quixote," and while the setting wasn't as extravagant as the State Opera, it still delivered those heart-pounding performances and truly heart-warming emotions.
Of course, it wouldn't be a proper Emma blog post without some shopping, would it? While my ballet-inspired attire never goes out of style, Vienna's incredible shopping scene was a definite treat. This week's must-haves? A vintage black-and-white tutu, adorned with delicate sequins. The perfect accessory for a night at the ballet! Oh, and I can't resist indulging in a few new pieces from Vienna's world-renowned fabric shops. You’ll be seeing my new pink dress in upcoming blog posts – guaranteed to have the same kind of twirly and glamorous appeal that my beloved tutus have! And as any fellow ballet-lover can confirm, good shoes are absolutely essential, and luckily for me, the shops around Stephansplatz did not disappoint. I am already dancing on air in my new ballet flats. The perfect ballet accessory for a day spent exploring the beautiful Viennese city!
Speaking of exploring, today, I took a leisurely horse-drawn carriage ride through the Prater. The air smelled of spring blossoms, the gentle sway of the carriage and the rhythmic clip-clop of the horses’ hooves felt like a ballet in its own right – all I was missing was a tutu to really tie it all together. However, maybe a horse would be an unusual tutu-partner…
Of course, I am also dedicating some time to enjoying all the classic Viennese treats: a warm slice of Sachertorte, topped with whipped cream, with a steaming cup of Viennese coffee is something I can truly indulge in, especially after all that dancing and shopping! And to satisfy my artistic cravings, I have found some beautifully crafted handcrafted wooden ballerina ornaments - my new collection is ready to start taking shape. (Don’t worry, they will be joining my current collection of pink ballerina figurines and stuffed ballerina toys, of course! )
There is so much more to see and experience in Vienna – I could talk for hours about this charming city and its rich culture! It is impossible not to be enthralled by Vienna's elegance, artistry and historical grace! But for now, my dear tutu-loving readers, I must sign off for now, I've a ballet class to attend this evening. And you can bet your bottom tutu that I’ll be practicing my moves!
Until next Wednesday, dear friends! Don’t forget to check out www.pink-tutu.com, where I’ll be posting even more gorgeous pictures of Vienna's vibrant energy and my ever-growing collection of ballerinas, tutus and, of course, everything pink!
Stay glamorous and happy dancing!
Your tutu-tastic Emma
