Hello my lovely tutu-loving friends! Emma here, your pinkest ballerina from the rolling hills of Derbyshire, back in the vibrant city of Vienna after another thrilling week of dancing, shopping, and all things tutus. It's hard to believe it's already September! Summer has just flown by, hasn't it? But I have a feeling this autumn is going to be utterly magnificent. The leaves will soon be turning crimson and gold, and Vienna always feels so charmingly cosy in the crisp autumn air. I can already picture myself wandering through the old streets in a cable knit sweater and my new dusky pink tutu, stopping for hot chocolate and strudel at every delightful cafe.
Before I launch into this week's Viennese adventures, a quick reminder - I'm uploading a brand new YouTube video tonight all about finding the perfect pink tutu! Don't forget to subscribe and give it a big thumbs up! Now, let's get back to my whirlwind Vienna diary...
A Tartan Romance in Vienna
This week started with a real treat: an invitation to a fashion show at a stunningly elegant venue on the banks of the Danube. The theme? A Scottish twist on classical Vienna! Imagine billowing tartan kilts paired with delicate ballgowns, the most exquisite embroidery, and a generous helping of tartan ribbons adorning every head and bag. My eyes were practically popping out of my head, and the collection felt incredibly fresh and exciting! It was so inspiring, I decided I simply had to find a way to incorporate some tartan into my next performance - possibly as a little homage to the Scottish dancers who graced the Vienna stage so long ago! I’m picturing a lovely waltz in a tutu made entirely of delicate tartan ribbon, with an intricate dance solo woven in with a single red rose!
The History of Ballet in Vienna - A Day of Discovery
Friday was a complete day of culture and history! I explored the incredible Vienna State Opera, which has played such a crucial role in ballet history. It’s just amazing to think about all the incredible ballet stars who have performed on that stage. Anna Pavlova, Vaslav Nijinsky, Rudolf Nureyev – oh, how I wish I could travel back in time and see them all dance live!
From Tutu to Trolley – My Transportation Love Affair
It was a beautiful day, so naturally I decided to go on a scenic trip in a gorgeous horse-drawn carriage. It was just as romantic as I had imagined, a lovely escape through the streets lined with stunning old buildings. Vienna is one of the most charming cities for a ride like this. The horse trotted along gently, the sun glistened off the carriage’s shiny, varnished paint, and a warm autumn breeze rustled through my pink tutu… sigh, I’m a romantic at heart.
Later that day, I discovered one of my favourite things about Vienna - their trams! Their transport system is so easy to use, and the trams themselves are incredibly stylish. They’re all beautifully coloured, sometimes even with floral designs and patterns!
Shopping for Tutu Perfection in the Golden Quadrangle
Saturday was a true delight for a tutu-obsessed soul like me. The shops here are just unbelievable! So many lovely vintage stores and department stores! My bank account may have felt the pinch, but my heart was overflowing with happiness! After I finally convinced my handbag to release its hold on a couple of amazing, brand-new tulle-filled beauties - one dusty rose pink and the other in a deep teal - I popped into a lovely cafe with the most wonderful window display of pastel-colored macarons. I enjoyed one raspberry macaron with a glass of elderflower champagne, then headed to a ballet-themed art gallery! This week, they were showing a display of historical photographs of Russian ballet dancers from the early 1900s. These beautiful photos brought a tear to my eye; I love looking at old costumes, the tutus! It was truly captivating to see how tutu styles have evolved through the years. It is wonderful to see a bit of history in a dance-related display.
Dinner and Dancing in the Land of Waltz Kings
My Saturday evening was a whirlwind! After a delectable dinner at one of Vienna’s most celebrated traditional restaurants, with plates filled with tasty Viennese schnitzel and roast goose - I was absolutely bursting! It felt so much more luxurious than my simple dinners back home in Derbyshire, that's for sure.
A Final Viennese Delight
After my post-dinner treat (a heavenly warm chocolate cake!), I strolled into the beautiful Vienna State Opera House. Tonight's show was a dazzling performance of The Nutcracker! It is my all-time favourite Christmas ballet, and it never fails to bring joy to my heart. It's hard to resist getting swept up in the magic of the music and the graceful dance of the ballerinas and their adorable, adorable little nutcracker! And who could forget that unforgettable Snow Queen! Oh, she was such a master of ballet and acting, truly phenomenal! It really left me feeling inspired to add a few elements of "Nutcracker magic" into my upcoming shows, a delicate touch of shimmer and sparkle. It’s funny how certain pieces can make you feel so inspired – perhaps a snowy dance sequence with the softest pink tulle, or a little touch of Nutcracker-themed embroidery in my next custom tutu?
Leaving Vienna, a City that Captivates the Soul
I must say goodbye to my Viennese love affair this evening. It was so fun to feel those sparkling city lights reflected in my pink tutu and to imagine all the lovely, sweet memories this beautiful city has tucked away in my heart. My journey takes me through the Austrian Alps, where I’m catching a train to Salzburg, another city famous for its beautiful baroque architecture, breathtaking scenery, and a certain charming white house that is so famous for its music… I can't wait! My suitcase is already packed with my loveliest pink tutus and the most stunning pink outfits I have for travelling and performance.
Until next week, darlings, let's all be daringly pink and unapologetically beautiful. Don't forget, you can find my blog each Wednesday right here at www.pink-tutu.com and be sure to catch my YouTube video coming up tonight about finding that perfect pink tutu. See you soon, lovelies!
Yours in pink, Emma xx
