Oh, my darlings, it’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for another dose of pink tulle and Austrian enchantment! This week, I'm positively buzzing with excitement after a weekend immersed in the glorious world of Vienna – a city that, in my humble opinion, is every bit as magical as the stories about the Habsburg dynasty suggest!
It’s official, I’ve fallen head over heels for Vienna, and it has nothing to do with Prince Charming. No, this city has stolen my heart with its grand architecture, elegant coffeehouses, and its deep love for the performing arts, particularly the ballet. My little pink tutu felt positively at home, practically pirouette-ing its way through the cobbled streets!
Before I spill all the wonderful details of my Vienna escapade, let’s have a little chat about travel, darling. My travels are fuelled by a very special source – the beautiful world of ballet. It’s my joy to bring you, my darling readers, glimpses into the magical realm of tulle and toe shoes. From waltzing through elegant theatres to learning new pirouettes at some of the most esteemed ballet schools in the world, I weave my adventures around my passion for dance.
This time around, my journey started in Derbyshire, where I found myself performing in the most darling ballet production of "Cinderella." We had such a smashing time putting on this classic fairytale with our own unique twists, from a fabulous pumpkin carriage crafted with recycled materials to Cinderella's sparkling pink dress – which, I can tell you, positively stole the show! The audience went wild for it!
After our last curtain call, it was time to set off for Vienna! Now, I’m a big fan of train travel. The romantic views gliding past, the gentle rhythm of the wheels on the tracks – it all inspires my creative soul! Plus, you can enjoy the view and have a glass of something fizzy while you're at it! Oh, and a huge plus, it’s a much more environmentally friendly choice than air travel! This trip, I opted for the classic Orient Express. Talk about grand – stepping onto the carriage, you’d think you were straight out of a period drama! There was live piano music, luxurious upholstery, and enough space to practice my arabesques (with some difficulty, I must admit)!
Once in Vienna, I decided to settle in a quaint, little guesthouse, surrounded by blooming wisteria and with the sweetest smell of freshly-baked strudel wafting in from the kitchen. What a dream, right?
My Viennese adventure started, quite literally, at the Vienna State Opera. And you can only imagine the sheer joy of seeing my very first "Sleeping Beauty" at this legendary venue! This version was set in a wonderfully opulent castle, complete with towering ceilings, shimmering chandeliers and a stage fit for royalty. It truly transported me back to the world of fairytale. And the music, darling! Such elegance, such drama! I danced right along with the swans on stage!
But, what makes Vienna so special? Well, for one thing, its rich musical heritage! You’re surrounded by breathtaking music from classical maestros like Mozart and Beethoven, from every street corner and every coffee house. It’s enough to inspire the most introverted of souls. Even I was tempted to write my own musical (maybe "Pink Tutus & Viennese Waltz", just a thought!), although I’m quite sure I would need a professional composer on board.
Talking of composers, did you know that the beloved "Sleeping Beauty" music was actually composed by Piotr Tchaikovsky, darling! Yes, this Russian composer created a musical masterpiece that captures every essence of a princess’s dreamy life – both good and bad – and his exquisite music continues to be cherished by ballerinas worldwide!
On Friday night, I couldn’t resist taking a short carriage ride around the city, as I wanted to truly capture the beauty of Viennese history. The streets, bathed in soft candlelight, whispered of imperial dynasties and magnificent balls. With every clip clop of the horses' hooves, I imagined waltzing through the streets with a dapper gentleman from the time of Mozart! Such magic in the air!
And let’s not forget about Vienna's coffee culture. The charming cafes and coffeehouses, filled with the sounds of clinking teacups and chatter. They are truly a sight to behold. You could spend hours sipping Viennese coffee while observing the passing scene, and even work on my next ballet routine, inspired by all the fascinating people. It’s all part of the Viennese charm – so inviting and captivating!
As a ballerina who absolutely adores ballet, Vienna offers something that every dancer would dream of. And, naturally, it’s a wonderland for ballet enthusiasts! I was overjoyed to find several excellent ballet studios in the city, all with a beautiful and inspiring ambience! There was just one small, perhaps large problem! These studios don’t use tutus as part of their training, so it was an absolute joy to introduce these dancers to the wonders of wearing a pink tulle tutu for practice! Imagine the lovely surprise on their faces when they realised just how stylish and graceful they can be, with a touch of pink, tulle!
From a leisurely breakfast at a coffeehouse to an impromptu dance session in the Hofburg Palace Gardens, Vienna is truly an inspiring destination. The grandness of the imperial palaces, the cobbled streets where history is alive in every corner, the delicious pastries and the world-renowned opera house – this city has it all.
It was with a heavy heart that I left this captivating city on Monday. I waved goodbye to my carriage and said farewell to the Viennese people with fond memories of my trip. It truly has been an inspiring weekend, and it’s left me with some fabulous ideas for my future blogs!
I will definitely be back to this charming city for more exciting adventures! Vienna, I love you. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I hear some beautiful waltzes calling my name – I have a feeling they want to dance with my pink tutu again!
I hope you all enjoyed this week’s blog, darling readers! Stay tuned for more adventures in my upcoming blogs! And remember, everyone has a bit of a ballerina inside – let your inner-tutu shine!
