Pink Tutu News #96: The Birth of Ballet as We Know It!

Hello lovelies! Emma here, your go-to gal for all things pink and pirouette-y. This week, we’re waltzing back in time to a momentous year – 1668! Yes, darlings, the year that changed the course of ballet history, paving the way for those glorious tutus we adore today. I even managed to time travel back to this iconic year – talk about a vintage dance party! Let’s delve into this fascinating story together

You might be thinking, “Emma, surely ballet existed before 1668?!” Well, you’d be absolutely right! But this year, a very special institution was born – the AcadĂ©mie Royale de Danse. Can you imagine the buzz in the streets of Paris? Think ballet classes, royal court performances, and – get this – ballet fashion being set as the gold standard.

And who was the mastermind behind this royal ballet academy? The ever-so-fabulous King Louis XIV! Think elegant powdered wigs, luxurious brocade, and oh la la those extravagant, theatrical court dances! Talk about inspiring our inner royalty, wouldn’t you agree?

Now, let’s travel a little further into time
Imagine Paris in all its glory – cobbled streets, the grand palaces of the royal court, and ladies (and gents!) all dressed to impress in the latest fashion trends. It was like a Parisian dream come true – only way more glitzy!

But the Academy didn’t just set fashion trends. It was where some of the earliest ballet masters, those legendary teachers of the art, emerged! Think Pierre Beauchamp, the master of danse d'expression and five ballet positions – the very foundations of our ballet steps.

Now, I'm not talking about your simple, dainty, "basic ballet," darlings. In this time, ballet was theatre – full of dramatic gestures, a lavish showmanship that was out-of-this-world. It wasn’t just dancing; it was telling a story, and I can just imagine the awe and excitement of seeing these breathtaking spectacles.

As the story unfolds, it wasn't all about the dancing and the fancy dresses! Ballet began to flourish as a distinct art form. Ballet became a way of life. And yes, this is precisely what sparked the desire to embrace tutus, and more importantly, pink tutus, across the globe!

Now, the pink tutus may not have appeared until a little later (just wait until I unveil that story, darling!), but it's clear that the academy's influence and the passion for ballet's beauty and art laid the very foundations for our love of dance and the enchanting allure of pink tutus.

In this time, even shopping for the perfect ballet outfit was an adventure! Think delicate silk and lace, beautiful ribbons adorning your hair, and a bold splash of colour – imagine, bright pinks would have been the height of fashion. It would have been the perfect blend of chic, elegance, and effortless charm, a perfect dancewear dream for any ballet fanatic, wouldn’t you agree?

Speaking of theatrical wonder, imagine these amazing shows. Some top favourites of the year:

  • "Le Ballet de la Royne" by MoliĂšre and Lully: This musical spectacular is a truly regal performance – all royal grace and charm!

  • "The Grand Ballet de l'AcadĂ©mie Royale": Imagine 24 beautifully dressed dancers performing with an array of emotions in this stunning, elaborate ballet spectacle.

Oh darling, don’t you just wish you could see it all for yourselves? Maybe one day, I'll pull off that *pink-tutu time-travel trick again. You're welcome!**

To complete my time-travel escapade, I had to capture the spirit of 1668 in the most elegant way. So what better than to channel the essence of that year in my ballet outfit: A delicate pink tutu, a sparkling silver belt with delicate silver ribbons flowing behind me, a soft white shirt for that classic flair, and a beautiful white scarf. Voilà! I’m right at home in that beautiful era of dance and exquisite ballet.

Stay tuned for the next Pink Tutu News, as we dive deeper into the history of this magnificent dance form – it’s truly a tale of grace, glamour, and captivating artistry!

Until next time, dear friends.

Happy Dancing!
