Hello darlings! It's your fabulous pink-tutu-wearing time traveller Emma here, back for another delightful dive into the world of Drag! I hope you're all sitting pretty with a cuppa and a freshly-baked Victoria sponge, because this month's adventure is extra special! Today's date? October 10th, 1993, my dears. We're going back in time to see what the scene was like on this very date! So grab your sequined fan, slip on your most glamorous shoes (hello, glitter pumps!), and join me on a dazzling journey!
As you all know, I, your glamorous Time Traveller, have this magical, sparkly pink tutu that whisks me away to different eras in drag history! Today, it's taken me to a bustling, brightly coloured New York, where the air buzzes with energy. It’s the height of the "Superqueens" era, where performers were pushing the boundaries of drag and captivating audiences with their theatrical flair! The most thrilling thing is that today, in this magical moment in time, we’ve got a drag event at the legendary Judy's Supper Club!
The very air in the club is thick with the smell of patchouli and glitter. We're talking big hair, glamorous makeup, and of course, tutus! The iconic Divine, still a legend even in the 90s, is headlining this evening. Can you imagine the crowd going wild?! This event, with its incredible line-up, is truly the highlight of New York drag, making this night, in my humble opinion, a must on the calendar for every true drag queen fan!
Let’s take a peek into what other fab performances were gracing the stage across the globe:
London: The Royal Vauxhall Tavern was rocking with a fabulous variety night that included some of the UK's most fierce drag acts! If there’s anything we know about the UK drag scene, it’s that we never disappoint!
San Francisco: The legendary Cockettes, those incredible pioneers of theatrical drag, were at the forefront of a wild and creative drag show! They were renowned for their imaginative, playful, and oftentimes political, drag performances.
It seems the year 1993, much like today, was a vibrant playground for talented, flamboyant individuals across the world!
The Art of Tutu: 1993 Style!
The fashion scene in 1993 was absolutely incredible, don't you think? While the drag outfits themselves may seem slightly dated, those colours and that confidence, you couldn’t replicate them today if you tried! The trend that stood out to me were the bold, saturated colours – think deep violets, emerald greens, bright fuschias. These daring colours combined with outrageous patterns, flamboyant wigs, and playful makeup, created some seriously fabulous drag looks! And the shoes? My dears, the shoes! Over-the-knee boots, glittery stilettos, and platforms for days – truly, an iconic era for fashion!
Now, as we wrap up this fabulous journey, remember that Drag, in all its fabulousity, has a long and glorious history. The artists of 1993, just like those before and after, played an essential role in paving the way for drag as we know and love it today! Their courage, creativity, and flamboyant spirit truly inspire.
Until next time, stay glittery, darlings! And remember: life is a stage, so strut, sashay, and wear your tutu with pride!
