Hello lovelies, and welcome to another instalment of your favourite drag history blog, Pink-Tutu! As usual, I've been busy jetting about in my trusty time-travelling tutu โ this month, we're landing in glorious April 2007. Oh, how exciting! Let me tell you, darling, April 2007 was a real peach. The world was buzzing with exciting news about all things drag, so prepare yourselves for a fabulous dose of history and glamour.
First stop, darling, we're landing in London for a proper good gawk at the Divas Live stage. Now, if you weren't already clued in, this fabulous event was the place to be for drag. We're talking a phenomenal line-up of the absolute queens of the scene โ think Miss Fame, Courtney Act, Sharon Needles, and even Miss Fame. Let me tell you, this show was a smash!
It's amazing how much the scene has evolved, darling, but back then, Divas Live was all about a raw, exciting, and totally fearless display of artistry. They were breaking down barriers and turning heads, showing the world the true power of drag. Now, I have a secret to tell you: my favourite part was when Sharon Needles donned a pink tutu โ see, even back then, the future was pointing towards a world covered in pink!
Now, we all know that drag isn't confined to the stage, darlings. The streets were alive with the energy of the drag scene โ especially in the heart of New York. April 2007 saw the launch of The World's Drag Race, and oh darling, what a spectacle! We're talking drag performers, all vying for the crown. Now, I know you're thinking "But Emma, that's RuPaul's Drag Race!", but the title wasn't announced yet โ all the juicy details were still brewing under the wraps. Still, let's just say the queens were already turning up the heat, showing off their creativity and fierce style!
Speaking of style, April 2007 saw a fabulous wave of fashion in the drag scene. Remember Alexander McQueen's collection "The Girl Who Lived in a Tutu"? Iโve been obsessed ever since I saw that exquisite black swan tutu, so I just had to slip into my own pink tutu and recreate that breathtaking style, darling! Can you imagine? I felt like a true ballerina queen in that ethereal pink dream.
Now, to celebrate my pink tutu extravaganza, darling, we're jetting back to Derbyshire for a little something special โ I simply had to bring the glamour to my hometown. This month's event? A fabulous drag show called โQueen of the County. โ The show was the epitome of a good old-fashioned Derbyshire night, complete with glitz, glitter, and a healthy dose of tea and biscuits!
But, darling, that's not all! April 2007 was also the month of International Drag History Day! (Remember, we are obsessed with Drag History on this blog) To commemorate this truly magical event, I travelled back in time to visit the legendary Judy Garland - a pioneer of all things drag! Imagine my excitement - I'm sure my face was all โ**'s upโ for a whole week! We spent hours discussing everything from sequins and show tunes to gender expression and how far we had all come. It truly was an iconic, empowering moment, and I will never forget the lesson I learned โ the history of drag is a journey of resilience, creativity, and celebration, and it all began with women like Judy who pushed boundaries, paved the way, and dared to shine!
And there you have it, darling! April 2007 was a whirlwind of pink tutus, drag history, and fashion, and I simply could not have wished for a more amazing time travel adventure! Stay tuned for next month's blog post where weโll explore more pink-tutu filled adventures in drag history โ until then, darlings, always remember that you are beautiful, you are talented, you are powerful, you are a queen, and you should wear a pink tutu!!!
Until next time, Emma, xoxo
