Grab your feather boas, polish those stilettos, and hold onto your tiaras ā itās going to be a glamorous journey!
Oh, how I wish I could say my latest adventure began with a cheeky chassĆ© and a perfectly executed pirouette, but this time it started with a wardrobe malfunction of epic proportions. My trusty time-traveling tutu, "Pinkalicious," (yes, that's her name, donāt judge!), decided to shed some sequins at the most inconvenient moment, scattering them all over the dressing room like glitter bomb confetti. It was a right old hoo-ha, I tell you! Thankfully, a good squirt of super glue, a prayer to the patron saint of sequined attire, and some emergency sewing by my resident drag mama sorted the problem. It was a lesson learned: always pack a backup supply of sequins when travelling through time!
Speaking of travel, my time machine ā cough, cough, my magical pink tutu ā whisked me off to the glorious year 2017. And oh darling, what a year! From the glamorous goings-on of RuPaul's Drag Race, the explosion of Drag Street performances, to the theatrical brilliance on the stage, July 2017 was absolutely buzzing with drag magic!
My first stop? None other than the electrifying RuPaulās Drag Race season 9! I managed to slip into a drag-tastic performance of Valentinaās incredible āQueenā lip-sync. Oh, the drama! Oh, the camp! Honestly, the entire competition was brimming with fabulousness! From Shea CouleĆ©'s grace and charisma, to Sasha Velour's ethereal artistry, the talent on that season was phenomenal. The whole show had the air of pure entertainment, a delicious concoction of dazzling gowns, fierce make-up, and side-splitting comedy ā exactly how drag should be, donāt you think?
But hold on a sec! It wasn't just TV where the drag world was blossoming. July 2017 also marked a moment when Drag Street was truly taking centre stage! Remember those fierce, colourful Drag Street performances that were taking London, New York, and countless other cities by storm? Think of them as the ultimate showcase of street fashion, vibrant art, and unabashed joy. Drag queens were reclaiming the streets with their bold and bright outfits, leaving a trail of glitz and glitter in their wake. I have to admit, seeing the queens strut their stuff in their meticulously curated looks and throwing shade with a sassy strut was a highlight of my time travel experience!
As my time in July 2017 whizzed by, I felt the allure of the theatre. Imagine a world where drag queens were strutting their stuff on the stages of prestigious theatre spaces! Yep, you guessed it - Drag theatre was flourishing! "RuPaul's Drag Race Live" opened at the Rio Las Vegas in April of that year, setting the stage for a truly remarkable evolution of drag entertainment. A magnificent mix of showmanship, stunning artistry, and the unforgettable humour we all know and love from Drag Race, it was the perfect marriage of cabaret and theatrical talent. The entire experience felt exhilarating, as if I were caught in the middle of a whirlwind of stunning performances, with all the campiness and brilliance you'd expect from drag's finest.
As my trip through July 2017 came to an end, I had a newfound appreciation for the remarkable power of drag. From the infectious excitement of RuPaul's Drag Race and the dazzling, flamboyant Drag Street performances, to the pure magic of drag theatre, 2017 proved to be a year of remarkable strides in drag entertainment, pushing the boundaries and exceeding expectations at every turn.
Now, itās time to whip up a quick Pinktini (my secret blend of pink lemonade and a generous shot of raspberry vodka, if youāre asking!). Iām planning my next time-travel trip, and honestly, I havenāt decided where to land just yet. Maybe Iāll travel back to a decade that really sparked my love for drag, or maybe Iāll venture into the future! Whatever I do, darling, you can bet that I'll be sporting my pink tutu, ready to bring a little sparkle and joy wherever I go.
