Hello my gorgeous darlings, Emma here, your fabulous friend from Derbyshire! This month, I'm taking a magical pink tutu trip back in time to the fabulous 4th of April, 2018, to witness the magnificent world of drag. As always, darling, you can't go wrong with a sparkly pink tutu for your time travel escapades! Let's go!
A Peek into April 4th, 2018: A Drag Extravaganza!April 4th, 2018, was a truly splendid time to be a drag enthusiast! All around the world, queens were slaying and spilling tea on the stage.
A Drag Race Extravaganza! You canât mention 4th April, 2018 without thinking of RuPaulâs Drag Race! It was during this time that Season 10 was hitting our screens, and girl, it was serving looks, lip-syncing, and shady reading. In that very week, Eureka OâHara, the ever-so-extra queen from Arkansas, proved herself a true lip-sync assassin by taking down fan-favourite The Vixen with a truly fabulous âFunkytownâ performance! And let's not forget Monique Heart, whose grace and elegance on the runway with âMy Dress Has Feathersâ left the judges utterly smitten.
Did you know? Iâve even had a few friends who took part in a "Drag Race"-inspired event, called a âDrag Warsâ, in Derby around that time.
A Worldwide Drag SpectrumBut âDrag Raceâ wasnât the only drag spectacle going down that month! Across the world, drag was thriving. From London to Los Angeles, drag queens were captivating audiences, delivering the most sensational performances. There were countless drag shows on stages in Europe, from Amsterdam's âTrixies,â with its glamorous drag queens, to Berlin's âMadame Claude,â a truly daring drag bar with some of the best underground drag performers in the city!
Oh, and I heard in the US, there was this show called "Pose," starting up around the same time! They had an amazing, truly groundbreaking "house" style of drag and ball culture â truly stunning and so inspiring.
The Power of Social MediaWe can't forget the internet! It was the era of Instagram drag! Queens from all over the world were connecting and gaining international recognition through these platforms. Social media allowed queens to become influencers, using their platforms to promote their artistry, share their messages, and inspire audiences! It's an amazing way to get more folks interested in drag and everything that it stands for!
Fashion SpotlightLet's chat about the iconic looks that made me want to snatch that pink tutu for this trip! On April 4th, 2018, fashion was absolutely popping off. The 2018 Met Gala, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,â featured some of the most opulent, extravagant looks, many of them referencing the world of sacred art, and inspired by the fabulous, theatrical world of drag. Imagine the gorgeous outfits, like the legendary Rihanna in a âPope-esqueâ outfit, or Kendall Jenner, rocking a magnificent silver cross and thigh-high slit.
Shopping, Glamour, and a Little Pink Tutu MagicTo make the most of this historical trip, youâve gotta go shopping, darlings! Back in 2018, it was all about neon colours, bold stripes, and an absolute glitz-and-glam aesthetic.
My favorite stores at the time were these absolute gems, they served all the vibes:
- Primark (for budget-friendly fashion fun!)
- Topshop (the iconic destination for everything fabulous!)
- Urban Outfitters (boho-chic heaven! )
While youâre getting glammed up for a night out, grab yourself the pinkest tutu you can find, because a drag show in 2018, without a pink tutu? Simply un-thinkable.
The Final BowSo, there you have it, my darlings! A fabulous trip through time, in my magical pink tutu! I've learned that in the world of drag, there are truly no limitations, and Iâm so excited to share these tales with you.
Keep those pink tutus ready, because, as always, my dearest, stay glamorous, keep shining bright, and donât ever let anyone dim your sparkle!
