Hello my darlings, Emma here, your pink-tutu-wearing, time-travelling blogger! This month, I'm whisking us back to a most splendid time: May 2018. It's a real treat, let me tell you, as there was a lot going on in the world of drag then, darlings!
But first, I must explain. Now, it's not just the glamorous life of a time-travelling drag queen that allows me to journey through history, oh no! My pink tutu, dear reader, it's not just a fashion statement. This magnificent piece of fabric is imbued with magical properties. With a twirl and a flick of my sequined wrist, it can send me back in time. All I need is the perfect pink shade and a dazzling feather boa to finish the look, of course. I don't exactly understand the magic, but who needs logic when you have fabulousness, right?
Anyway, back to the subject at hand! The big news for drag in May 2018 was, of course, RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10! Imagine the excitement! The iconic season that brought us Asia O'Hara, Eureka O'Hara, and Aquaria, the season that had that stunning "Queen of Hearts" runway, the sheer campness of that "Snatch Game", the emotional journey that was the "This Is How We Do It" lip sync. This is the year my loves, when RuPaul's Drag Race truly took the world by storm! I'm still catching up on the endless meme culture that came out of this one. But what can I say? I just get swept up in the wonder and glory of the Snatch Game. There's truly nothing quite like it!
Remember that moment when Eureka walked in and immediately dropped a major truth bomb on all of us, shouting “They keep saying I’m big girl but I’m more like big personality, baby”. That iconic moment is truly everything to me.
May 2018 also brought us some exciting events outside the studio. You know how much I love a good show, and let me tell you, May was jam-packed with fabulous drag shows across the world! From London to New York, Sydney to Sao Paulo, the air was positively buzzing with sequins, glitter and some seriously phenomenal performances. You can bet your bottom dollar I had my tutu-clad, time-travelling self in the thick of it!
There was a drag queen fashion show in Paris at a grand manor, and let me tell you, the pieces were a real visual feast. I even spotted one outfit, a full tulle gown with an emerald green satin train, that actually took my breath away. It reminded me of a beautiful dancer gliding across a stage - with all the added glamour of a divine drag queen, of course! It’s so much fun to look back and see how far fashion in drag has come! The details, the embellishments, the incredible use of colours – drag queens, they're more than just entertainers, they're artists!
Another one of my absolute favourite things from May 2018 was the RuPaul's Drag Race Season 9 finale party in Hollywood! That night was pure, unadulterated drag heaven!
I danced all night. My sparkly tutu, the colour of a sunset over the sea, caught the shimmering lights perfectly, and let me tell you, I truly felt the spirit of drag's divine beauty. This feeling of unity, the love of the art, the passion we share. There's no feeling like it!
I’ve even heard there was an international Drag Ball in New York. It was, apparently, the biggest, the wildest, the most decadent Drag Ball they’d ever seen in New York, a truly amazing affair! You can bet your boots that I was on the dance floor with those fabulous New York queens, showing them just how we do drag in good old Derbyshire. The music was electrifying, the energy was unstoppable. If I’m honest, it left me completely breathless - I can still hear that fabulous bass line, see that shimmering strobe light, even feel the heat of the dance floor, darling! I need a quick fan after just writing about it.
What else could possibly top that, you ask? Well, The Drag Race World Tour: The Las Vegas Show, the tour that included queens from Season 9 and Season 10! Talk about an epic drag moment! I squeezed my way into a booth right up at the front for a fantastic view of that electrifying, fabulous performance. You would think I'd be exhausted after my drag dancing and fashion adventures. But honey, when these drag queens were performing, that energy just sucked me up and dragged me across that floor with it! It was like a fabulous whirlpool of joy, and honestly, the very best type of magic a time-traveling pink-tutu-wearing girl like me could ask for.
This May 2018 was, as you know, a very big one for drag! We’ve seen an outpouring of passion, creativity and joy. I feel like my drag-inspired time travelling has taken a real turn for the amazing. It is a wonderful reminder that the beauty of drag is always present. It’s more than just outfits, make-up and a great lip sync. It’s an attitude, a community, a passion that will never fade. So darling, join me, join this phenomenal world of drag! Do some drag yourself and make this time of your life your fabulousness, too! And most importantly, put on that pink tutu, it will certainly make you feel like a star!
Love always, Emma
