Darling, it’s me, your favourite pink tutu-wearing, time-travelling ballerina drag queen Emma! 👋✨
This month, my magical tutu has whisked me back to a very special day - 10th October, 2022! This is the date, my dears, that RuPaul’s Drag Race announced the brand-new UK season 4, sending a shockwave through the global drag scene.
Yes, I’m in Derbyshire, England – the land of rolling hills, oatcakes and, well, sometimes drag. But my little corner of the world felt the ripples of this news.
Now, 2022 was a big year for Drag Race, with season 14 finishing just a month before. The US drag scene had, like, exploded, and the UK was starting to simmer, waiting to boil over!
As you all know, I live for the iconic looks, the outrageous performances, the heart-stopping reveals and the endless shade. This new season? Well, it was all about that, with an absolutely fabulous cast! I mean, you had queens who were practically born to strut their stuff in the spotlight, alongside others who were making their debut on the world stage.
Imagine, if you will, the scene - it's just after midday, my tutu swishes as I stand at the screen in my pink bedroom, and all of a sudden - the internet buzzes! It’s like a collective gasp, as all the drag stans get the same notification - “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 4 is coming!”
So, here I am, on the 10th of October, 2022, and it’s official - the UK scene is going to get huge. It felt like this news was more than just a drag season announcement. It felt like a wave of pink, ready to flood the UK with sass, style and absolutely everything you could wish for from a fabulous drag show.
Honestly, even my cat (who is absolutely, positively not a fan of drag) got up and did a sassy little wiggle as she heard the news.
Time Travelling Through Drag - A Day of Shopping and Shade 💅🏻So, after a moment of celebratory flailing, my pink tutu transported me straight to Soho. You all know I love a good day in Soho - the hustle and bustle of drag queens getting their glam on, the shops, the performances... it’s a drag queen’s paradise!
Oh, darling! Can I tell you about the fashions?! In the shops, the new line of glitter eye shadow palettes - perfect for that smokey, smoky look! And those platform heels! Absolutely serving height and sass in equal measure. I spent the whole day just dreaming up new looks!
Of course, what’s Soho without the queens? I caught a glimpse of queens getting ready for a show – all bright colours, glitter, and perfect poses in the makeup mirrors. I could just hear the whispers of gossip in the air. "She's wearing a tutu, what a flop," one queen grumbled. And darling, let me tell you, there's nothing I love more than a bit of good drag shade.
So I, with a swish of my magical pink tutu, headed to the most exclusive theatre on Dean Street.
It was there, right in the heart of Soho, that I experienced drag like never before. A glamorous cabaret was taking place, bursting with vibrant colours and extravagant outfits. I could feel the music thrumming in my bones, and my own little pink heart thumped in my chest, filled with anticipation and excitement.
These queens knew how to work a crowd, with routines as sharp and precise as any ballerina's pirouette. The whole thing was just a spectacular show of artistry and creativity, a symphony of laughter, applause, and a few “sashays away!” It was absolutely fabulous!
That’s the thing about drag, my lovelies, it’s a global phenomenon! Even back in 2022, the UK scene was starting to get the world's attention. It was electric, exciting, and oh so camp - everything a queen could wish for!
The Magic of DragBack in my pink room, clutching the glittery souvenirs I picked up at the show (a sparkly fan and a dazzling pink lipstick - oh, it was just fabulous!) , I couldn’t help but feel that little sparkle in my heart, a reminder that drag wasn't just entertainment, it was art. It was a celebration of individuality, a challenge to societal norms and, of course, it was a great reason to dress up!
And who doesn’t love dressing up?!
The queens who graced the stages back then – they weren't just queens; they were storytellers, they were visionaries, they were artists. They were bringing colour and laughter to the world, one fabulous wig and sequined dress at a time!
So, darling, whenever you're feeling a little down, whenever you need a bit of magic, remember:
- The world is a much brighter place when there's drag.
- Pink is power.
- And a fabulous tutu is the key to unlocking your own personal stardust.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, darling, I have a magical pink tutu to pack! Who knows where it’ll take me next time…but wherever I end up, I’ll be there in a cloud of glitter and, of course, pink!
See you next time, darlings! 💕
