I’ve just popped back from a July jaunt through the annals of drag, and trust me, honey, this month was bursting with sparkle and glamour!
So grab your favourite tipple (a chilled glass of pink lemonade for me!), settle in with your most glamorous pink tutu (duh!), and get ready for some tea, because I'm spilling all the drag-tastic details!
July 2023: A Pink Dreamland of Drag!Right, before we delve into this month's dazzling delights, let me introduce you to the magnificent vehicle that whisked me back in time - a breathtaking, time-traveling pink tutu! This isn’t just any old tutu; this, darlings, is a glorious fusion of couture and magic, handcrafted by a secret coven of Derbyshire fairies, specifically to take me on my pink, drag-tastic travels!
Now, I've always loved a good theatrical performance, a grand costume, and all things sparkly, and July 2023 had so much on offer. My oh my! The sheer volume of drag on the scene was enough to make my heart go 'patter', and my glitter-encrusted eye make-up glisten!
First stop on my time-travelling itinerary? London, July 14th, a Saturday. The world was abuzz with anticipation for a monumental event, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 4 finale, and I was there! The iconic Roundhouse theatre hummed with excitement, and you could feel the palpable anticipation in the air as the queens, ready in their absolute finest, stepped onto that iconic runway! The stage itself glittered like a thousand disco balls, and as each queen graced the stage, they poured their hearts and souls into their final performance. Let me tell you, honey, the crowd went absolutely wild!
It’s just a little snippet from my trip, and, believe me, July 2023 offered so much more! Every city, every club, every stage pulsed with drag’s captivating energy.
Time Traveling With Pink Tutu: Behind the Scenes of 1990’s Drag!One of the most glamorous trips on my tour took me to a magical night club in New York City in 1993. Oh, darling, this era of drag is so, so, special to me. It was all about fearless self-expression, defying conventions, and most importantly, it was truly camp!
I danced to the hottest tracks with legendary icons like Divine, Lady Bunny and Joey Arias, their outfits - and yes, you guessed it - tutus! Were out of this world, as was the entire drag scene! Imagine a night club buzzing with fabulous energy, the music was electrifying, and every performer radiated raw talent and unabashed creativity.
And there was a real sense of family and support amongst these amazing pioneers, sharing tips on crafting the perfect glitter beard, getting that perfect strut and using every little bit of stage space!
It was the time of drag kings, queen warriors, everything was huge - the costumes, the makeup, the wigs.
I think I bought enough wigs for the entire drag scene! Thankfully my time-traveling tutu has infinite pocket space!
Tutu Tips From the Time Traveling QueenOh darling, I know that your little heart is probably beating a little faster with drag fever at this point.
So here are a few tips, from my very own time-traveling heart, to get you started:
Wear what you love and be yourself. That's the most important advice any seasoned queen could give. This is all about letting your own fabulous self shine, whether you prefer flamboyant outfits or simple and chic styles.
Remember, darling, it’s not about the size of your glitter, it’s about how you own it! Let your personality flow through your entire act - the makeup, the costumes, the movement.
Be kind. I learnt this a long, long time ago from the amazing queens I have met during my travels! I always go by the golden rule of "treat others how you wish to be treated". Remember to support and cheer on those around you; that’s how you build an inclusive and vibrant drag scene.
Never be afraid to embrace the drama! Okay, we all love a little bit of juicy gossip. Just be mindful. Sometimes a simple “Honey, how are you? Did you have a great day?" can work miracles!
Never stop learning and evolving. The magic of drag is that it’s ever-changing. So, always try something new! New make-up styles, try out a different era of drag. But always have a back-up pair of eyelashes - just in case!
