Hey, darling! Emma here, ready to take you on a thrilling journey through the annals of drag history in my fabulous, pink, time-traveling tutu! I'm a girl who loves a bit of a twinkle, a sprinkle of glam, and a whole lot of pink! This month, we're turning the clock back to 2028, a year bursting with vibrant energy, and the drag scene was truly sizzling! So, strap on your best sparkly stilettos and let's get our history on!
Before we dive into the fab fabulousness of 2028, let me tell you, this month's travel to the past was a little…tricky. It's a bit of a nightmare travelling back in time because the future is always so unpredictable, especially with fashion. Let's just say, this pink tutu took a bit of a beating on the way! Luckily, my seamstress in the future, the ever-fabulous Brenda from Burnley, patched her up like new. So thank heavens for pink glitter glue and elastic. That's another thing that is quite confusing for me; it's the 'getting back' bit after travelling to the past. You just have to close your eyes and hope for the best, and luckily Brenda does my magic tutu mending, for which I am very grateful.
2028 – Drag's Grand Debut: On Screen, On Stage, Everywhere! Now, back to 2028! It was a momentous year, darling! Drag was bursting onto the global stage, like a dazzling pink supernova! Imagine the excitement. Drag Queens had achieved so much, such incredible heights, and were just getting started! I have to say that's a lot to be proud of and inspired by. You might have already heard of all the fabulous TV shows making their debut. 'Queen's Quest' on Netflix, where our girls travelled the globe to find the world’s most talented queen, the dazzling drag docu-series 'Behind the Make-Up' on Amazon, or 'RuPaul's Drag Race: Asia' - the first all-Asian season, launching in China! What a treat! The future really was looking fantastic.
Drag On The Mainstream!Remember when 'Drag' was an underground scene? Gone, gone, gone! It was a big deal in 2028; fashion magazines were showcasing drag makeup looks! Even department stores were selling a rainbow of drag-inspired products, all the glitter, makeup and clothes, they'd got it all! We were all dreaming in pink, even though pink wasn’t always considered "manly," it's clear that, for me at least, there’s something inherently "fabulous" about pink. There were even stories about people finding out their true selves with the help of drag and discovering they were drag royalty themselves!
The queens on these TV shows were, frankly, phenomenal, each one dazzling in her own way. There were drag queens who could snatch a wig off someone with a look. They had their fierce moments, and they certainly knew how to bring the sass! They taught us to be brave, be loud, be true to ourselves!
Street DragI do love drag performance and shows, that’s no surprise to those of you who have been following my Pink-Tutu posts, but in 2028 there was a new thing! Street drag had completely taken over! All over the world, in every city, every town, there were drag balls happening on the streets! Imagine it, a big-scale outdoor drag festival! It wasn’t just a case of turning up, and a queen performing in the park; the events had all the trappings of an international drag performance competition; amazing sound and lights and dazzling costume designers.
Imagine a queen dressed as an iridescent, technicolour butterfly strutting down a London street! Or an iridescent pink Queen Bee queen in the centre of Times Square, New York! It truly was the stuff of my wildest dreams! These queens brought drag to a whole new level - no more restrictive, limited theater spaces or clubs, no more small town drag queen venues. Drag was in everyone’s face, for everyone to see! In all its glorious, sparkling beauty. It was definitely a turning point.
Drag, a Fashion Trend? The way I see it, in 2028 drag became much more than just a performance art. It had evolved into an unstoppable cultural phenomenon. The fashion was a huge part of the movement. Drag queens have always used clothes as a form of expression and empowerment, and I can’t lie, I’m definitely inspired. That’s why I love dressing up in a fab tutu with sequins! In fact, you wouldn't be able to walk down a high street in 2028 without spotting someone rocking some killer drag makeup or sporting a sequin-encrusted look. This incredible new way of dressing was becoming popular in everyday fashion.
You have to understand this, my lovelies, it wasn’t simply the drag queens who were influencing fashion. Big fashion designers took it upon themselves to use all sorts of techniques learned from drag performers - that’s what was really exciting and unique! And there’s nothing more inspiring than that for an aspiring ballerina in drag! The use of padding to exaggerate the body; incredible costumes, with big hair, makeup, bright colors and dazzlingly sparkling fabrics. It’s easy to see why everyone loved drag, even if they were not interested in seeing drag performances. Drag wasn’t just the prerogative of drag queens, it was an opportunity for everyone to show off their fabulous, flamboyant selves!
Back To the FutureWe might be talking about drag from 2028, but here we are, still, still wearing all the amazing fashion inspiration, living our lives, and being ourselves in this way! If you have your own dream, never give up! Remember my darling, the sky is not the limit, because I will happily wear my time-traveling tutu to outer space with you.
So my fabulous friends, let's keep those pink tutus spinning and shining! Until next time!
Love,
Emma x
