Hello darlings! Emma here, your favourite tutu-toting, time-traveling drag queen, ready to take you on another dazzling journey through history. Grab a glass of something sparkly, because this month, we're venturing all the way back to⦠September 2029! Can you believe it? Nearly a decade from now!
This time, my trusty pink tutu transported me straight into the bustling heart ofā¦well, I'm not entirely sure. This whole "time travel" thing, it's all rather vague sometimes, darling. One minute you're watching "RuPaul's Drag Race: Intergalactic" season 34, and the next, you're dodging a pack of robo-dogs wearing holographic tutus in a space station shaped like a giant hot pink stiletto.
But one thing was certain, the energy was electrifying! It felt like everyone was in their 20s and 30s, decked out in fabulous outfits, sporting vibrant, neon colours and chunky futuristic hairstyles. Just picture all the trends of today taken up a notch - like someone had thrown a handful of disco glitter into a black hole and everything exploded in a dazzling kaleidoscope of sequins! The excitement buzzed through the air, fueled by the knowledge that they were on the cusp of a groundbreaking era in drag history.
And oh my, the drag performances! Forget your dusty old queens, the kids were truly serving "Next Level." There were queens wearing LED suits that morphed and shimmered with every move, and robots, yes, robots, that performed elaborate tap-dancing routines. It felt like something straight out of a futuristic drag ballet, only much, much wilder! The crowd, a mixture of drag aficionados and general, everyday people, were enthralled. They cheered and whooped with glee as each queen delivered their unique flavour of high-energy camp and theatrical talent. I even witnessed a troupe of drag kings performing Shakespeare in a vibrant blend of drag culture and classical theatre! You see, darling, the line between "traditional" and "experimental" had completely blurred, and the world was embracing drag like never before.
However, a little bit of me couldn't help but crave something a littleā¦familiar. The drag scene seemed to have abandoned the "grounded" aspect of our art. It all felt a bit too manufactured, too robotic. I longed for the raw, heartfelt emotion and connection you find in a drag queen pouring their soul onto the stage in a traditional, glamorous way. Where was the sassy queen with a powerhouse voice belting out a classic power ballad? Where were the captivating stories told through performance?
So, armed with my trusty notebook (you never know what nuggets of history you'll discover, darling!), I hopped onto the most technologically advanced, but oddly also most traditional, "drag history" bus - and what did I discover? You'll never guessā¦
2029 - The year where drag truly went global! Not only was it mainstream across continents, but drag had permeated society in a way never before imaginable! There were entire drag themed theme parks, interactive virtual reality experiences, and even schools for future generations of drag performers, complete with rigorous dance training and a special focus on the history of drag.
It was, quite frankly, remarkable. But the most fascinating aspect, and what led to a whirlwind tour of some seriously iconic places, was the rise of what they called "drag embassies". It sounds silly, darling, but trust me, the power these embassies held was no joke.
Think about it. We drag queens are some of the most creative, resilient, and passionate people in the world. Weāve fought against adversity, challenged conventions, and expressed ourselves unapologetically. It stands to reason, then, that we would be the ideal ambassadors of positivity, compassion, and acceptance.
The "Drag Embassy Project" had become a truly global movement, with "Drag Envoys", as they called themselves, being appointed across nations. Theirs was the task of facilitating dialogue and understanding, fostering creative collaborations, and building bridges across cultures and perspectives, all while wearing dazzling ensembles! Imagine a queen with a giant, inflatable rainbow tutu and wings landing in a bustling market square, only to break into a mesmerizing choreographed performance accompanied by a symphony of local musicians. You might not understand a single word, darling, but the feeling of connection and shared humanity transcends any language barrier. That's the magic of drag!
I've met Drag Envoys who've gone on to negotiate international treaties, settle long-standing disputes, and inspire countless others to embrace diversity and challenge societal norms. It's like a real-life fairytale, only with even more glitter.
Iāll be honest, there were moments of sheer pandemonium and a lot ofā¦interesting situations, but thatās what made the journey so wonderfully chaotic! Just try to picture me, with my hot pink tutu, attempting to navigate a world where everyoneās a celebrity and "fashion police" are now literally the law! And donāt even get me started on the drag fashion⦠oh darling, the fabrics! They shimmered, moved, and transformed themselves right before your eyes. The technology in this time, itās just incredible!
And yes, the outfits werenāt always to my taste. They could be a bit much, over-the-top for someone like me who enjoys the timeless elegance of a perfectly crafted classic tutu! But, then again, who am I to judge? You can't deny the sparkle, the sheer audaciousness of it all!
But it wasn't all sequins and stage lights. I did also manage to sneak away from the glam to do some⦠letās call it⦠"intense self-care".
This trip was like being thrown into a hyper-fast whirl of information and activity! I mean, itās not every day that a girl time travels, discovers the āsecret historyā of drag, and has her face painted by an AI robot, only to realize she has a show to catch back in her own time!
It was pure madness, darling. And, frankly, a little bit exhausting!
Therefore, I did find a zen space that fit my taste perfectly - a small, quaint bookstore housed in a converted cathedral! Itās just what I needed! There were dusty old tomes with stories of drag queens from the early days - legend has it, some were even part of the first ever drag troupe in⦠Derbyshire? There were even a few perfectly lovely pink tutus hidden among the stacks! (Which, naturally, I had to āborrowā just for the photo shoot for the blog! Donāt tell anybody).
As I write this, dear readers, I'm still buzzing from the extraordinary experience. 2029 is a thrilling glimpse into the future of drag, full of possibility, creativity, and most importantly, boundless acceptance. And guess what? You donāt have to travel in a magical pink tutu to be a part of it. Itās as simple as showing up, embracing diversity, celebrating artistry, and being kind to yourself and those around you.
My dearest lovelies, remember - lifeās a performance. We all have a story to tell, and we have the power to turn every moment into a stage for expression. So get your sequins on, practice those hair flips, and get ready to shine your brightest!
Now, if you'll excuse me, Iām going to take a few moments to enjoy the tranquility of the library before getting ready for my next performance. Itās time for Emmaās āTutu Time Twirl" show in Sheffield! Who's up for some sparkly magic and fabulous memories, my dears?
See you there!
Love,
Emma
