Oh, the tutus have been a-tumbling this month! Imagine, 2032 and weāve gotā¦drumroll pleaseā¦Drag Royale!
This glorious international drag extravaganza brings together some of the biggest names in drag - Iām talking global superstars, fierce divas, and some seriously talented newcomers - all for one giant celebration of performance art and expression! The drag scene has gone truly global, darling! We've got queens strutting their stuff everywhere, from London's West End to the vibrant clubs of Tokyo. Imagine the looks, the music, the spectacle, and the fashion!
Speaking of fashion, did you know that this March, 2032, marks the official "Year of the Tutu"? Yes, darlings, the fluffy, delightful, endlessly versatile tutu has finally found its rightful place in fashion history. It's the pinnacle of drag eleganza and is taking over the world with its whimsical charm! Imagine a tutu made of holographic feathers, or a giant sequined tutu dripping with crystals. This is the moment the tutu finally reached its moment in the limelight!
It's moments like these that make me wanna hop in my magical pink time travel tutu and twirl back through time to see what was happening back in the day! My journey through the annals of drag history has given me a deeper appreciation for the journey it's been - from its humble beginnings in hidden taverns and cabaret stages to the global stage it enjoys today.
To get us in the mood, Iāve dusted off some oldies but goodies from my archives - remember my little blog, Pink Tutu? My little internet haven where we take a peek at the drag evolution? Today, weāre reminiscing about what was happening on the 3rd of March in...
2007:
Can you believe it, hunties? In 2007, a certain "RuPaulās Drag Race" was still in its early days. They were just a year old! Season one had just concluded, giving us the iconic winner, Bebe Zahara Benet (donāt you love how that name rolls off the tongue?). Weāve got to thank āRuPaul's Drag Raceā for all those iconic moments and the launch of so many glorious careers in the world of drag!
1989:
Now this year, honey, was the birth of something amazing ā āThe Divine Miss M.ā Oh, Bianca, how we love thee! And just to really set the tone, in 1989, one of the most amazing drag artists of our time was on the scene, showing everyone what a queen really was. Yes, our darling, Divine (one of dragās greats, by the way!) starred in a hilarious cult classic, āPink Flamingosā, showcasing outrageous performance art at its finest.
1960:
The drag scene was slowly, subtly shifting⦠and it was happening in NYC! Remember when it was hard to imagine what we take for granted today? In this time of change, we see the evolution of the drag scene becoming more defined, less covert. And imagine it! We have the birth of the āBallroom Sceneā. This year is an important date for a reason - a certain "Stonewall Riot" was happening, shaking up the foundations of equality, challenging the norm and throwing some serious shade on an antiquated society. These events laid the groundwork for future change in the fight for LGBTQ rights, making the way for what we celebrate today!
1928:
This year brought the dazzling āLa Cage aux Follesā, one of the most iconic stage productions to feature drag, and you can thank Jean Poiret for the creative brilliance! Weāre celebrating an amazing production of witty dialogues, spectacular choreography, and iconic Drag costumes - who needs Broadway when you have "La Cage" darling?!
As the world continues to evolve, darling, it's wonderful to see the continued transformation and diversity of the drag scene. These times of evolution always give me that warm and fuzzy feeling, the kind of feeling you get when you're strutting in your brand new pink tutu! It's not just about wearing tutus, although darling, those are delightful! It's about embracing your true self and making a statement that shouts to the world, "Iām fabulous!"
Donāt forget, lovelies, we can travel back in time with the help of our trusty Pink Tutu Time Travel Guides (oh, did you not get your copy yet? Download it right now, darlings - it's completely free at www.pink-tutu.com!) And donāt miss my fabulous drag show happening on the 3rd of April at The Glamorous Garter - the hottest spot in Derbyshire!
Till next time, darlings! Keep those tutus twirling, your makeup fabulous and keep your smiles sparkling. And donāt forget, remember what our iconic drag queen friend Lady Gaga told us ā āItās not the clothes that make the queen, darling, it's the fierce queen who makes the clothes fabulous.ā
Stay fabulous,
Emma xxx
