I simply must share the marvels of drag history with the world! And what better way than through this glamorous blog?
So buckle up, buttercups! Grab your tea and biscuits - it's gonna be a banger!
The 8th of August: A Date For The Drag Diary!
Today we’re in 2048. To say it’s an interesting year is an understatement! This is a time where technology has taken over our lives, drag has exploded beyond the wildest dreams of even the most flamboyant drag mothers of yesteryear! It’s just… wonderful. ✨💖
And yes, dear readers, you guessed it, even in 2048, I’m still sporting a pink tutu. Not only is it incredibly stylish, but let's be honest, this little beauty's got me where I need to be in the blink of an eye, and all in fabulous fashion!
As I set off this morning, I knew this trip would be a real treat. I had a couple of key spots in mind, but, darling, who am I kidding? It’s a free for all when you’ve got a pink tutu, so naturally, I had to follow my heart – and by that I mean the pink glittery sign for the biggest drag showcase on the planet, Dragverse 4D! You could practically feel the pulse of this dragtopia just stepping out of the time machine, so I knew I had to find out more!
And, honey, you will be absolutely astounded by what I discovered!
Dragverse 4D: Beyond Imagination
Imagine a massive, interactive, virtual-reality drag theatre that blurs the line between audience and performer! The energy was absolutely electric!
Instead of the typical ‘drag show’ you’d have experienced a century ago (that, darling, is if you're lucky!), Dragverse 4D offered the most cutting edge, 3D immersive, interactive experiences! The whole audience was essentially ‘living the show’ through the magic of 4D tech and the artistic brilliance of these incredible drag queens!
As I floated around in the VR world - the glittery virtual space, I discovered so much.
There were giant inflatable queens (just enormous! 🤯 ) battling each other in an amazing aerial show in the centre of the ‘virtual arena’.
There were drag ‘robots’ in stunning costumes, doing the most fabulous dances and fiercely spitting verbal rap battles (and no, they did not diss any drag queens from our time – they were way too respectful for that - what a treat!).
There were virtual drag creatures – I mean, drag creatures you could touch (through these futuristic gloves), even, if you so dared, give a gentle high five – like, a giant, scaly green lizard lady wearing a giant feather boa (the boa was almost bigger than her – absolutely spectacular!).
One of the amazing queens from Dragverse 4D that truly stood out to me (I mean, she did stand out – it's an immersive 4D space!), was this glamorous drag robot – she literally looked like a 5-foot-tall metallic drag queen! She called herself LadyChrome and, darling, was she ever fierce. LadyChrome, all metal with glowing LEDs on her body, strutted about with this laser pointer thing, she'd flick it at you, and you'd feel the heat! She had such incredible confidence! It was seriously amazing.
After a show at Dragverse, the entire drag community, digital and actual, met up to enjoy each other's company and share the stories.
Now, I'm not the biggest technology person myself - I mean, don't get me wrong, I adore my glittery, mobile phone - but this was absolutely brilliant! And then I had an idea, a big idea - I decided I needed to try it out! I decided I needed to try and incorporate something similar in the 'physical' world.
I had this urge to add a touch of that magic to my own drag performances! It had been ages since I had performed - a whole six weeks! The drama, the absolute tragedy. I hadn't realised it until this day. You know, you take drag for granted – even for a seasoned, magical-tutu-wearing time traveler - but when you're in an immersive space like Dragverse, and then you take that space and experience that world and 'touch' those incredible virtual drag creatures - and then suddenly find yourself at a ‘physical’ event, like… a simple ‘live show' in 2048, you can't help but miss that interactive energy! You find yourself questioning things like: 'What are my favourite show stopping moments? Why am I not out on a stage every day!?!?!?' I just…I just had this yearning for more.
Taking Inspiration from Dragverse 4D and Applying It Back to Real-World Drag
It took me two weeks to conceptualize, and then another four weeks to make, and darling - finally it was ready! I premiered a brand-new 'interactive' show, inspired by Dragverse, in London's Soho theatre - it had an element of "technology meets art meets drag", so I called it "Beyond the Veil"! I spent so long working on this - the tech, the look, the sound, everything was designed to create an experience – a truly, captivating show!
"Beyond the Veil": A New Interactive Drag Experience!
And honestly, my darlings, I was absolutely overwhelmed by the reception. I wanted to create something more interactive than just your traditional, standing, show - like, just having people come to a performance. So, in "Beyond the Veil" there were these super glamorous and extravagant 'interactive spaces' where people could move around, they could touch the decorations, interact with elements on the stage - some even had some little 'magical touch screens'.
They could move from the main performance space to these "touch and see" areas – these incredible themed zones where I had 'interactives' – they were things like mirrors with hidden message or they had hidden touch screen buttons that created visual special effects like a mini-lighting display in certain spots - oh, and one of them even sprayed glitter rain from hidden spaces!
I felt that ‘extra' was just as much about the experience, the audience immersion - like getting a glitter bomb directly into their faces, or getting sprayed by a shower of ‘magical’ sparks (don't worry, it was safe!). But darling, it was brilliant! It had theatrical magic meets drag extravagance - I loved it!
But more importantly, the audience loved it!
You could really see and feel their excitement for it all. Some people had a real sense of wonder about the whole performance – a sense of enchantment - and, of course, they had glitter on their faces! It felt like such a genuine reaction - people had a good time – and who can deny a good drag experience? No one, that's who!
After the success of the show, my excitement about Dragverse only grew - that sense of innovation and the energy was contagious. It really ignited the fire in me - it was a truly exciting and thrilling time!
What a fabulous journey! ✨ 💖
And darling, if there is a more fabulous adventure, I will be sure to share it with you.
