Hello my darlings! 🙋♀️ Welcome to another edition of your favourite monthly blog, Pink Tutu Time Travel, your guide to all things pink and pirouette-tastic! Today we’re on a trip back in time to August 8th 1891, and let me tell you, things are pretty sensational in the world of ballet!
This is post number 2768 for my ever-growing collection of historical ballet adventures. If you’re just joining us, well, get comfortable! 🪑 There’s a whole world of ballet out there waiting to be explored, and with my trusty steed Magic Meg by my side, we’re ready to hop on the pinkest, glitziest, most twirling time-travelling adventure you can imagine!
So, pull on your finest pink tutu, polish those dancing shoes, and grab your cuppa! We're off! ☕️
My first stop? Naturally, I’m whisked straight to London, the heart of the dance world! Now, I know I've spoken before about how wonderful it was to visit The Alhambra theatre in its hey-day (let’s just say, the chorus line in La Cigale is spectacular! 👯♀️) but today I have another London jewel to visit!
It’s 1891 and we're stepping into the glittering grandeur of The Empire Theatre to witness a performance of ‘La Esmeralda’. Now, darling, this wasn’t your usual ballet performance! 🎭 Imagine a whole story brought to life in dance, drama, acrobatics, and even a bit of comedy! Now that's my idea of a night out! 🤩
As a dancer and ballet enthusiast, you just HAVE to have the costumes in your wardrobe! La Esmeralda, originally a French operatic ballet (oh my! The tunes were divine!), was beautifully staged, complete with authentic French Romani attire! (Yes, you can definitely wear these outside the theatre. Imagine the look you'll get on the high street!😉) And of course, Esmeralda herself wore an outfit that just screamed romance, with her luscious flowing hair and that scarlet, fringed dress… 🌹 It’s just begging for a recreation in pink. I’m going to have a chat with my seamstress! ✂️
You know I'm always on the lookout for the latest fashion, so of course I couldn't resist slipping into The Empire after the show to do a spot of shopping at the ‘Galleries’. I can already see some new ballet-inspired outfits on the horizon! Think Parisian hats and feather boas for our dance classes… divine! 🎩🪶
Next up: St Petersburg! 🇷🇺 It's impossible to talk about 1891 without mentioning the Imperial Ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre. This is the place to be if you want to experience the majesty of traditional Russian ballet. They are famed for their beautifully crafted sets and stunning costumes!
Speaking of costumes, oh my! Think silk tutus that would shimmer under the theatre lights. Can you picture yourself on stage in such exquisite garments?! 💃 You bet I could wear this to my next performance - all I need is a bit of pink paint and we're good to go! 💖
And just imagine! These incredible costumes, a hundred years old, sitting tucked away in a dusty wardrobe waiting to be discovered! ✨ Well, my love for history, for the details and the forgotten pieces of ballet lore means they’ll never be truly forgotten! I'm just so delighted that my travels mean I get to be the one who finds these treasures!
But it’s not all about the spectacle, darlings. The essence of the art, the artistry and skill, are even more impressive! There are so many talented dancers working their magic within the confines of the Mariinsky, and it's simply impossible to express what it is like to feel their passion and grace! 🤩 Just know, this was, and still is, a special place, where legends were made. And you know me! I love seeing legends made! ✨
Now, I could talk about all the brilliant artists here, like the dazzling, world-famous prima ballerina, Anna Pavlova! She's so inspiring, with her incredible elegance, artistry, and commitment to pushing the boundaries of the artform! (I can’t tell you how much I am inspired by women who follow their dreams with so much dedication!) 💪
Pavlova’s influence spreads throughout the globe, like the trail of stardust she leaves behind as she performs on stages worldwide! But back in London! ✨ London is abuzz! As a passionate fan of theatre, nothing delights me more than the vibrant excitement that engulfs a city on the night of a show! I could almost taste the anticipation in the air – it's positively intoxicating!
And then I realised… A-ha! This is where my latest inspiration comes in… 🌟
You see, every month I post my experiences, my latest thoughts, and my pink tutu explorations on pink-tutu.com. But wouldn't it be fantastic to create a blog entirely focused on 19th Century Ballet! Imagine the possibilities, darlings! 🩰 It could be the perfect platform for sharing my insights, my love for the history and the artistry, and for sharing stories from the ballet world during these fascinating years! 🤩
Just imagine a world of beautifully detailed costume descriptions, analysis of famous dances, and backstage gossip… gossip in which I can fully embrace the fabulous stories from my time travelling and perhaps even make up some! 😉 You know I love sharing, especially if I’m giving something back to the ballet community – my way of ensuring the beauty and history of dance continues to blossom!
Well, that’s it from my pink tutu travels for this month, my darlings. It's been an exciting and inspiring journey through history. Remember, there’s a world of dance and history out there just waiting to be explored.
Follow along, wear pink tutus (always!), and let's get that ballet world dancing with you!
See you next month,
Emma xx
