Pink Tutu Milan - Post #154: Ciao Bella! From Derbyshire to Duomo - A Pink Tutu's Milan Adventure

Ciao bella! Emma here, and it’s Wednesday, so you know what that means! It’s time for another Pink Tutu Milan post!

I’m feeling a little bit “pinch me!” You know that feeling, right? The one where you just can’t quite believe where you are and what you’re doing! This week, I’m in Milano, Italy - the City of Fashion, Glamour, and Pink Tutús!

How did a Derbyshire girl like me find herself on the other side of Europe in this breathtaking city? Well, my love of ballet (and a touch of pink tutu magic) of course! As many of you know, I make my living by dancing, performing across the UK and even further afield, and this month I'm performing here at Teatro alla Scala - yes, the iconic opera house, the envy of the world, and a girl who wears pink tutus can't miss this chance. This week is just for me, a chance to breathe in the Milanese air, soak in the incredible atmosphere and discover this beautiful city! And of course, find out the best places to wear a pink tutu (more on that later)!

Trams and Tutu Tales:

Now, before we jump into the Italian adventures, a little bit about how I got here! The journey was magical, even if I had to navigate the iconic tube from London Euston to Birmingham, a small detour for the “pink tutu fairy” before a comfortable sleeper train from Birmingham New Street all the way to Milano. I arrived feeling bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and I love the easy access of public transport, with trains whisking me straight to the city centre, then a breezy, scenic tram ride, with an adorable, old-fashioned charm - like a ballet scene brought to life!

It was my first experience with the Italian Tram system. I felt so glamorous, especially when I stepped off the tram in Piazza del Duomo with my little pink tutu bag tucked under my arm. I stood in awe of the magnificent Milan Cathedral – the Duomo. Talk about dramatic architecture – and, even better, a fantastic pink tutu photo op!

Speaking of pink tutus, I know, some of you might be thinking “a pink tutu in Milan?! Seriously?”. I can already hear the giggles, the gentle but definite ‘what’s she doing’ expressions, but honestly? Embrace the absurd, friends. That's my philosophy!

It's about the confidence and the whimsy. Who says Milan is just about black leather jackets and power suits? Sometimes, the most outrageous choices can be the most liberating. This isn’t about a statement – It’s about pure, unadulterated fun!

And believe me, Milan has a surprising amount of places for a little pink tutu magic!

Ballet Bound:

My favourite spot, so far, is of course Teatro alla Scala. A true palace of culture with its regal charm and opulent interior, the stage where legends have danced and where even today the talent is unmatched. My very first evening in Milan I found myself standing on the world-renowned stage. That's something to add to the Pink Tutu bucket list!

Tonight, the entire city was abuzz with a mix of excitement and nervousness; the Opera Ballet are in full performance. And, wouldn’t you know it, they were performing a brand new, modern adaptation of Swan Lake. I have tickets, right in the center of the audience. I can't wait! This ballet performance is about as classic and beautiful as it gets, and even better it will give me inspiration for the blog next week. It's gonna be a fantastic night and I'll definitely be doing a separate blog post on that tomorrow.

Milanese Mimosas:

But first, I have to experience all the wonders of Milan, as a little tutu-wearing tourist.

This morning, I woke up to the sounds of the bustling city. Even in the early hours, I could hear laughter and chattering coming from local markets and charming cafes - this city is so full of life, and its vibe was infectious! I strolled out of my little hotel and headed to the heart of the city where I took in all the energy of the markets. Everything, from freshly-baked bread and glistening cheeses to vibrant fabrics, beautifully crafted shoes and the most decadent, chocolate-laden pastries. And, oh my! The smell of fresh coffee was just the perfect boost for a girl who had just started her day!

I stopped for a little snack – a cappuccino (naturally) - then wandered around, enjoying the cobbled streets, taking in the architectural wonders of Milan and just absorbing the incredible energy of the city! I even found myself, (yes you heard it here first!) having a glass of mimosa with a very elegant pink-clad signora! And you know what, it was fabulous!

I always feel inspired by people with incredible fashion sense! This lady had impeccable style! A beautifully draped dress in a muted lavender, sleek black heels and her signature accessory, a bright turquoise scarf, adding a little spark to her look. She totally nailed that Italian chic vibe, you know the kind, just a little dash of sophistication, with an effortless cool air about her! It gave me all the more reasons to put on my little pink tutu this evening, as I wander around Milan and absorb its fascinating culture.

Pink Tutu Milan: Fashion in Action

Speaking of fashion, my oh my, the shopping! The incredible boutiques, with their windows overflowing with the most exquisitely crafted designer wear and accessories! I am in shopping heaven. This trip to Milan just has to be an explosion of all things stylish. I’ve already treated myself to a pair of elegant white heels. I felt utterly fab while trying them on in a swanky, glass-walled boutique - the floor, an artfully mirrored mosaic. My pink tutu was a sight to behold against the glittering white leather and mirrored reflection. Who needs the catwalk when you've got your own personal spotlight?

While I could easily spend hours browsing (and perhaps emptying my bank account!), I also had to save a little bit of time to find some more "tutu-friendly" fashion gems, you know, shops bursting with colours, textures and unique statement pieces to compliment my own personal, erm…eccentric fashion! After all, Milan is a place that embraces individuality and style in all its guises. Who better to find it, than a pink-tutu-wearing ballerina!

Dinner with a View - A Little Romantic Side Trip

Now, you all know, I love nothing more than exploring a new place through food! So, what’s better than indulging in an amazing meal at an atmospheric Italian restaurant? This evening, I booked a table in a restaurant with a breathtaking view, a hidden gem located at the very top of a medieval tower. Imagine cobbled alleyways and a dramatic ascent - a perfect setting for a romantic dinner with an exceptional view over the skyline, with twinkling lights and an unforgettable ambience. It felt like something out of a fairytale!

Tonight I had an incredible experience. I tucked into fresh pasta (I’ll admit, I took advantage of being on holiday) with a perfectly chilled glass of red wine. As the sun dipped low, I soaked in the warm, pink-hued light over Milan and felt utterly spoilt - the view, the ambiance, the food and of course, the chance to experience something new, something unique to this magical city. And of course, I wouldn't miss a chance to showcase a little pink tutu magic, taking a few sneaky photos against the vibrant, orange-hued sunset. It was such a spectacular view - definitely worth a visit!

The rest of the evening will involve, drum roll please, my little dance with destiny. It's not ballet, (well it will be ballet later!) but it will be about the city, about discovering its hidden gems, dancing the night away.

I'm sure it'll be a Pink Tutu worthy night, filled with exciting discoveries, and who knows? Maybe even more pink tutu inspiration!

Catch you on Monday, lovelies, as I share some more of my Milan experiences with you! Remember, don’t be afraid to add a little colour to your world!

Stay radiant and let your tutus fly high!

With lots of love and sparkling pink tutu dreams,

Emma
