Pink Tutu Milan - Blog Post #155 - Wednesday 1998-05-27

Ciao bella!

Welcome back to Pink Tutu Milan! I’m your trusty travel companion, Emma, reporting live from the vibrant streets of Milan. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the air is abuzz with excitement… because, well, you know, I'm in Milan! But more on that later… because before I dive into all the fab finds I unearthed on my shopping spree, I simply must tell you all about my incredible ballet experience this week.

Let me rewind a bit, shall we? You see, my darling readers, I recently found myself a little weary of travelling by plane. So, instead of soaring through the skies like a swan, I decided to journey by train to this glorious Italian city. I hopped on a sleeper train from Derby – oh, the nostalgia – a little corner of England that holds a very special place in my heart. It felt a little bit like Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole, except I didn't have a Mad Hatter in sight, just the gentle click-clack of the wheels against the track. It's a journey that I'd recommend to anyone looking for a bit of romantic adventure, truly. The gentle swaying, the sound of the wheels on the track, the soft rustle of the curtains in the breeze, it all just melts away the stresses of everyday life. I'm not going to lie, there's a certain magic to train travel, especially on a long-distance trip like this. It really helps you get in touch with your inner travel writer, I swear!

Speaking of magic, I must tell you about my first ballet show in Milan! It was absolutely spellbinding! The Teatro alla Scala, one of the most famous opera houses in the world, played host to a spectacular performance of "La Traviata". The story is so full of drama and heartbreak, and the dancing was divine. The costumes were breathtaking, and the set design was nothing short of extraordinary. It was pure, unadulterated magic. The energy in the room was palpable. I almost forgot to take a breath, I was so mesmerised! The applause afterwards was deafening, and you could feel the love for the ballet oozing through the entire room. And it was such an emotional, immersive experience.

Later, as the Italian night began to paint the city in soft hues, I wandered through the streets of Milan. There is truly an enchanting feeling in Milan at night. You feel as though you've stepped into a romantic film set! And my favourite moment of this Italian escapade had to be a beautiful night at La Scala. The grandeur of this iconic opera house took my breath away. The elegant interiors, the sweeping staircase, and the palpable air of tradition – it truly felt like a glimpse into the world of Italian theatre.

And now, let's talk shopping! The next day, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy, which is always a necessary part of any trip. Now, there's something about shopping in Milan that gets your heart racing – the air is practically fizzing with chic, the window displays are a symphony of style, and the pavements are practically overflowing with fashionable folk. I have a real weakness for Italian fashion. The silks are just exquisite and the patterns - oh my darling readers, you have to see it to believe it! And, naturally, I had to pick up some pieces of my own. Let's just say that my pink tutu collection got a delightful boost!

Of course, you simply can't leave Milan without a hearty serving of Italian food. On a whim, I stumbled upon a tiny trattoria tucked away in a back street. I’d never heard of it before, but my senses screamed ‘YES!’ when I got a whiff of that delicious Italian aroma drifting through the air. Let me tell you, the spaghetti alle vongole (that’s spaghetti with clams, my loves) was truly heaven on a plate! I'd gladly return for a second serving (and maybe a third) every single day!

Then, I decided to embrace the vibrant energy of the city and joined a ballet class at a nearby studio. Now, let me tell you, these Milanese dancers are on another level, seriously. Every step was effortless, every jump, so full of grace. And just look at their lines – they glide across the stage with an unbelievable ease and elegance. I am just mesmerised by these wonderful talents! Their passion is infectious! You know, I may be a bit biased as a ballet fanatic, but the whole class was captivating, and I learnt a whole lot about the beauty and elegance of this graceful art form.

My little ballet exploration had me absolutely beaming from ear to ear. And that feeling just followed me everywhere I went. From the grand boulevards of Via Montenapoleone, to the quiet alleyways, where I stumbled upon hidden little cafes with their tables spilling out onto the cobblestone streets, Milan has got it all!

One day, while I was indulging in the wonders of Italian ice cream, I came across a beautiful mural of a ballet dancer in the middle of an intricate move. It was absolutely stunning! The artist, they truly had a flair for detail. That beautiful mural really epitomises the beauty that I see everywhere I go in Milan.

Then I happened upon an open-air ballet performance happening on a beautiful courtyard in the heart of the city. They were dancing in the open, the setting sun turning the sky into a vibrant orange, painting the cityscape in shades of golden hues. The music was carried on the air, filling the street with a rhythm that touched every soul. And as the performance ended, there was a resounding cheer and applause from the audience. This beautiful courtyard performance felt like a real testament to the art of ballet. It's accessible to everyone, a beautiful spectacle that brought joy to every single person that watched.

In case you were wondering, it's no surprise that I went on an absolute shopping spree – it's kind of like a reflex action, the Milan fashion scene has this incredible, almost magical draw. You simply must indulge. But I wasn't just there for designer threads. No, my darlings, my heart's real desire, you see, is to make sure I find the perfect pink tutu. You see, a pink tutu isn't just a costume, it’s a symbol of joy, it's a symbol of self-expression! I aim to make it the most beloved item in every ballerina's wardrobe, from the most accomplished dancers to the most beginner of students. Let's face it, it's a little slice of heaven for every princess. I really feel the most empowered when I’m wearing a pink tutu – they bring me back to that feeling of pure, joyful freedom that I feel every time I dance. And as a devoted believer in the transformative power of ballet, I am absolutely certain it will enchant everyone, bringing joy to their hearts.

Anyway, you have to know, the most wonderful part of it all is the people here, truly. You simply can’t beat Italian hospitality, and there's this infectious warmth, it’s really a feeling that lingers with you, even when you're back home! The Milanese embrace their city with so much love and pride. They love their city's history, they're proud of their culture and they have a real joie de vivre that radiates through every interaction. The locals always take the time for a chat and offer up a helping hand with a kind smile. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't know the words to 'Mamma Mia', and the streets echo with music, laughter, and life.

And so, as I prepare to say 'ciao for now' from this glamorous city, I feel a sense of contentment. This is more than just a city, my darlings. Milan is a melting pot of cultures, of art and of inspiration. And in the centre of it all, the magic of ballet shines brightly!

Until next time, stay happy and stay fashionable, my darling readers!

With much love and a sprinkle of pink glitter, Emma
