Pink Tutu Milan - Post 174: October 7th, 1998 - Milan, you've stolen my heart!

Ciao, darling darlings!

Well, here I am, back in the glamorous heart of Italy, my very own Milan, where the air is thick with the scent of freshly baked bread and the sound of laughter echoes down the cobblestone streets. It’s Wednesday, and the sun is shining brightly, casting long shadows from the towering cathedrals, turning them into graceful silhouettes. Honestly, it’s enough to inspire even the most jaded of souls, and I’m positively bursting with inspiration for this week’s post!

This trip is extra special. My lovely Italian friend Lucia, whom you’ve met in my posts before, has kindly invited me to stay at her family’s stunning townhouse, just off the chic Via della Spiga. Talk about prime location! It's a true indulgence to wake up to the sounds of the city bustling into life below, and you know, my fellow pink tutu enthusiasts, I couldn't have imagined a more perfect spot for exploring this enchanting city!

Milan has such a captivating energy! Even walking down the streets feels like a scene straight out of a chic movie, complete with beautifully dressed people flitting about, sleek cafes buzzing with chatter, and a gentle hum of artistic energy all around. Honestly, Milan is like an open-air stage with every shop, square, and café an elaborate backdrop for a ballet of life!

Now, I just have to tell you about yesterday. As always, it began with a cuppa in my gorgeous pink polka dot mug. A simple delight, a splash of milk, a sprinkle of sugar, and that quintessential British touch, a pinch of warmth and nostalgia. Then I donned my most fabulous pink tulle dress, it practically glittered in the sunshine! You wouldn’t believe it, darling, Lucia's family all sat down and enjoyed breakfast together, complete with warm pastries, creamy latte, and their own little fashion show for me, each in their favourite ensemble. I absolutely adore that whole "family dining together" thing! So European, so charming! It’s a far cry from my busy Derbyshire mornings where I usually grab a protein shake on the go between ballet class and a last minute performance!

Then, for lunch, Lucia treated me to the most exquisite risotto! The rice was creamy and perfectly cooked, just the right amount of cheesy goodness, and I couldn’t resist asking her to share the secret. Of course, the recipe involves a hefty portion of love and family tradition, but it's a dish that’s been in their family for generations. They told me they even brought their special family recipe to a famous Italian restaurant, that I will have to try, later! Now that's a proper testament to its deliciousness!

And for the afternoon? Well, it's all about ballet of course! This city boasts several impressive ballet companies and the Teatro alla Scala (Scala Theatre) is a masterpiece of opera and ballet - truly breathtaking. Lucia knows the head of the dance program at Teatro alla Scala and secured a lovely little backstage tour for me, the excitement practically burst out of me! You just cannot comprehend, my darling darlings, how special it felt to actually walk in the hallowed halls where such legends of the ballet have performed. I'm truly giddy with delight - like a child who's just been whisked away to their favourite magical story! I can't wait to see the upcoming ballet season unfold!

We toured the ornate rehearsal rooms, admired the painstakingly detailed costumes, saw the amazing scenery in all its glory and had an opportunity to chat to some of the ballerinas. They’re incredibly talented, inspiring figures and they had the sweetest compliments for my little pink tutu! I think I made a few new friends!

And the ballet was wonderful, darlings. We saw “Giselle," the most romantic of ballets, a tragedy that left me in a puddle of tears! I simply couldn’t resist taking a moment to record my heartfelt reflections after such a beautiful evening in the theatre, so here's a quick little peek:

*Reflections on “Giselle” *

Oh, darling, “Giselle” is pure heartbreak! The passionate story, the ethereal costumes, the swirling dance – they all left me with a heart that ached with longing and yearning! Giselle’s journey is the epitome of human resilience, the ultimate tragedy of love, the painful truth about betrayal, and ultimately, the healing power of forgiveness. You see, Giselle embodies that delicate innocence that resonates deep within all of us, even as she descends into madness after heartbreak. The entire piece was a kaleidoscope of emotions, transporting me into another world – a world where ballet takes centre stage, and where the power of emotions guides every step, every twist and turn.

It wasn’t just Giselle that moved me though, the corps de ballet were stunning, dancing like living snowflakes in a storm of white. They embodied the essence of the “Wilis,” a haunting tale of vengeance, so powerful in its choreography and symbolism.

But more importantly, darlings, what I found so incredibly special about this entire experience is the story of resilience, the beauty of forgiveness and second chances. I walked out of the theatre, tears streaming down my face, my heart filled with gratitude for the privilege of sharing this magical journey!

After the performance, Lucia and I grabbed a delicious ice cream – what else would we do? In Italy, there's never a wrong time for gelateria, you see. But you wouldn't believe, my darlings, the amount of delicious-smelling cafes and gelato stands we walked by – I swear there was a new one on every corner!

I even stopped for a delicious latte - an absolute treat. They made it the traditional way, frothy and rich and sprinkled with just a touch of cinnamon. And oh my goodness, those Italian cakes – truly divine. But you see, the thing I love most about Italy isn’t just the food (although it is really amazing) but the pace of life, it feels less hurried, more full of joyful energy. And it rubs off on you!

We explored Milanese culture in its vibrant, energetic heart – the bustling city center – stopping for moments of rest at elegant fountains and picturesque courtyards. It's in these small moments that we experience the genuine beauty of Milan – where the ancient and modern collide, where tradition embraces progress.

And let’s not forget the fashion scene, darlings! There’s something in the air, a palpable energy and elegance! The fashion houses here, each one a piece of living history. The city feels alive with its rich artistic tradition – from stunning frescoes to ornate sculptures and breathtaking cathedrals.

Yesterday evening, we went out to experience some real Italian fun. We ate in the cutest restaurant, surrounded by flickering candles and romantic music, with all its vibrant charm, just a true Milanese dream!

Now, darlings, let’s get into the all-important details, the ones that matter: what I wore!

  • I wore my bright pink tulle dress, which danced around my feet as I waltzed down the cobblestone streets. A true ballerina, even away from the studio, darling!
  • A beautiful pair of pink high-heeled sandals, to give a bit of Parisian flair! They were a touch taller than my normal dance shoes, so I had a bit of a struggle negotiating those cobblestone paths. Oh darling, the fun I have sometimes!
  • And lastly, I tied my trusty pink ribbon around my neck, a splash of color and a sweet reminder of home.

I feel truly blessed, my darlings, to be in such a vibrant, stylish city like Milan! The city pulsates with passion, with history, and of course, with style! Every little corner seems to have its own unique charm. I think Milan is the perfect city to add to your list of must-see locations - It really has the heart and soul of the true Italy! The warm Italian culture has stolen a piece of my heart, and that little pink tutu that has travelled the world with me – is now a little bit more Milanese!

Next week, my darlings, it's time to explore a new location – and, trust me, it will be just as exciting! Until then, dance with joy, and stay stylish!

**Your dearest,

Emma**
