Pink Tutu Milan - Post #447 - Wednesday 31st December, 2003

Ciao, darling! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad ballerina, Emma, writing to you live from Milan, Italy! Can you believe it's already New Year's Eve? Time seems to fly by when you're having this much fun!

I arrived in Milan yesterday after a magical train journey from Derbyshire, all twirling and dreaming of sugar plums and La Scala. I've got to tell you, the Italians have an absolute penchant for the dramatic! The station was alive with colour, with vendors shouting out prices in a delightful chorus and people bustling about in their best holiday attire. I felt right at home amidst all the vibrant life!

And speaking of colour, Milan is truly a feast for the eyes! It’s been absolutely pouring with rain all morning, giving the city a misty, ethereal air, like a scene out of a ballet performance. And as you know, dear readers, I simply can't resist a good dose of the dramatic!

You wouldn't believe what I saw just this morning as I stepped out onto the bustling Corso Vittorio Emanuele II! A street performer in a bright yellow tracksuit was doing a delightful ballet routine in the middle of the street, complete with pirouettes and leaps. His movements were so precise and fluid, you'd think he'd been trained in the finest ballet school! People stopped and applauded as he finished, throwing coins into his hat. The sheer audacity of it all was so captivating!

Milan is like a playground for a fashion-loving ballerina like myself! I had to, of course, venture into the world-famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a stunning glass-covered shopping arcade with a grand, old-world charm. From couture to artisanal chocolates, it was a dream come true!

After spending the morning browsing through vintage shops, I treated myself to the most exquisite macarons I've ever had - they were a symphony of raspberry, pistachio, and lavender, and just melted in my mouth. Of course, no Parisian trip would be complete without a chic and glamorous lunch, and I settled down in a lovely café next to the Teatro alla Scala.

Opera House Adventures

I spent the rest of the afternoon at the magnificent Teatro alla Scala, taking in the dazzling splendor of its interiors and marveling at the exquisite artistry of the stage. You wouldn’t believe the craftsmanship in the designs and sculptures! It really transported me back in time. I almost imagined the whispers of grand opera and the fluttering fans of elegant ladies in silk gowns.

The evening was truly something else! The performance I saw, Giuseppe Verdi's “Aida,” was nothing short of spectacular! The music, the singing, the costumes – a perfect blend of passion and theatricality. The orchestra played with such incredible power, and the singers were just sublime.

I was truly moved by the story. I love it when the emotions of a performance reach out to you, make you laugh, make you cry. Aida touched my heart.

I stayed back after the performance to see the magnificent interiors lit up at night. The opera house looked so majestic, even more than it did in daylight. And as I made my way home, the air was alive with the sounds of a nearby jazz club. The music drifted down the street, inviting everyone to join in its joyous rhythm.

Oh, the thrill of exploring new places, the excitement of every new encounter, and the magic of a good performance – that’s what life is all about, isn’t it?

Now, as I settle down in my hotel room overlooking the twinkling lights of Milan, a question pops into my mind – wouldn’t it be utterly delightful to have a dance party on New Year’s Eve in our pink tutus? Imagine all of us twirling under the stars, a flurry of pink against the black night sky, our laughter echoing through the streets. It'd be pure magic, don't you think?

But no matter how you decide to spend the new year, dear reader, I hope you do so with joy, with laughter, and with a heart filled with the magic of new beginnings!

Happy New Year, everyone! I wish you a year full of wonderful adventures, graceful steps, and oh, so many more pink tutus!

*Sending you my love and wishes for a truly magical 2004, *

Emma
