Pink Tutu Milan: #493

Wednesday 17th November 2004

Ciao, darlings!

This week, I'm absolutely bouncing with excitement because I'm finally in Milan! It's been a lifelong dream to visit this fashion capital, and let me tell you, the moment I stepped off the train, I felt a wave of inspiration wash over me. The air here is practically buzzing with creativity!

Before I get to the delights of Milan, let's talk about how I got here. Remember last week when I mentioned performing at a charity gala in Brighton? Well, it was a smashing success! I felt utterly divine in my sparkly pink tutu, and the audience went absolutely wild. Their generous donations paid for my train ticket, and here I am, soaking up the Milanese sunshine (well, okay, it's a bit drizzly today, but who cares!).

Anyway, back to the fab-u-lous city of Milan. This morning, I started with a delightful stroll through the streets, taking in all the stunning architecture. You could say Milan is quite a pretty city, darling, all chic cobbled streets and impressive historical buildings. It really gives you that ‘European getaway’ vibe, you know?

First on the agenda was a spot of shopping. The sheer amount of designer boutiques in this city is mind-boggling, and honestly, it's like every shop is vying to be the most fabulous. I couldn’t resist popping into a few, and I managed to pick up a lovely silk scarf with delicate pink embroidery. It just felt so Italian, so stylish, so… me!

This afternoon, I headed to Teatro alla Scala, Milan’s iconic opera house. I mean, you can’t go to Milan without taking in the famous opera house, right? Even just standing in front of this grand building makes me feel utterly glamorous! While it’s true that the outside is stunning, it’s inside that really blows you away. Inside, everything is gold and velvet – honestly, it feels like stepping back in time to a gilded age! I treated myself to a ticket to see ‘La Traviata’, and my word, the performance was simply breathtaking. The singers' voices soared through the hall, the orchestra was magnificent, and the whole experience had me completely captivated. It was a sensory explosion!

But what’s a trip to Italy without indulging in a little bit of delicious food? I wandered into the most charming little trattoria near my hotel, tucked away down a quiet street. They had the most gorgeous, rustic interior and an open kitchen. I ordered the ‘Cotoletta alla Milanese’, a deliciously crispy breaded cutlet served with a generous side of pasta. It was absolutely divine!

Of course, after indulging in such a delectable meal, I had to find somewhere to work off all those calories! I managed to locate a ballet studio not too far from my hotel, a truly heavenly oasis of grace and poise. The moment I entered, the air filled with the sound of soft piano music, and I knew I was in the right place. This studio, darling, it felt so welcoming, so inspiring. I joined a class later that evening, and you would not believe the talent in that studio! Every move, every jump, every turn was just perfection. I learnt a new variation from the class, and I can't wait to try it out when I get back to London.

Milan, you’re simply enchanting. Every corner I turn, I discover a new, breathtakingly beautiful sight. This city is a dream come true. You could say it’s… pink with excitement, am I right, darlings?

It’s only Tuesday, and I already have so much to tell you. This blog feels like it could go on for pages and pages! This evening, I am booked for a ballet performance in an atmospheric courtyard of the old city. I've heard the venue is very picturesque, and apparently the production is inspired by the stories of Shakespeare! How fantastic is that?! Oh, and before I forget, tomorrow is my free day! The shops are calling, my lovelies, and I can’t wait to see what fabulous bargains I can unearth!

I’ll be back next week to tell you all about my new purchases and the beautiful ballet performance! In the meantime, keep on twirling, keep on believing, and keep on dreaming, darling!

Love and sparkle,

Emma x

Good morning, my lovely tutu-twirling tribe!

I woke this morning feeling absolutely blissful after yesterday’s spectacular ballet performance. You would not believe the magic I witnessed!

Let me tell you, the courtyard venue was absolutely charming, and the performance felt truly magical. The staging was set around the old Italian palazzo, and there were chandeliers sparkling above the audience, the stars shining brightly overhead, and everything bathed in a beautiful glow.

The production itself, well, let's just say it transported me straight to Verona! The entire performance was steeped in the Shakespearean love stories. I’m not sure what my favorite moment was because honestly, the whole performance was pure poetry. The choreography, oh, the choreography was magnificent! I loved the sweeping movements, the powerful leaps, and the beautiful lines of the dancers.

Speaking of dancers, I got the chance to chat with some of the ballet company members afterwards! The dancers are all so down-to-earth and talented. I was especially captivated by one lovely dancer, Francesca, who had a real passion for ballet and seemed utterly mesmerized by the art of telling a story with movement. It was truly inspirational!

After a lovely coffee and some conversation, I wandered off to get ready for the main event of today’s itinerary - the Milan Fashion Week! You’d be surprised how far a pink tutu can get you in this city of fashion. I decided to try a different approach to the Milanese fashionistas by keeping the focus on a bold pink tutu paired with classic Italian styling. My outfit consisted of a beautiful fitted pink crepe dress from one of the amazing boutiques I had discovered yesterday, teamed with a pink velvet jacket from a charming little antique shop that was chock full of vintage delights. And, of course, a perfectly pink beret completed the look.

I think I caused a real stir in the city as I headed towards the grand palazzo hosting the runway shows.

I was invited to see a number of fabulous shows throughout the day and my word, the clothes were just divine! We were treated to a spectacle of beautiful, daring, and just plain gorgeous fashion designs. There were designs featuring bright, bold colours and shimmering metallic fabrics. There was an absolutely divine gown adorned with delicate beads and feather-like trims, I swear it took my breath away! The whole experience was simply breathtaking! It was a world of high fashion, shimmering fabric, and dazzling imagination.

And as I’m writing this blog, a few hours later, I still feel absolutely giddy and a little dazed from all the amazing fashion. I spent the afternoon enjoying more delicious pastries with my new friend Francesca, and, as luck would have it, I found a small, exquisite shop full of handmade lace ribbons in gorgeous pastel colours.

I had to buy myself a length of pink silk ribbon, obviously! My love for everything pink has definitely rubbed off on her - we’re both a little pink-tutu obsessed. I couldn’t resist purchasing a couple of meters of silk ribbons for her too, but I won’t reveal their colors to you… shhhh! It’s a secret between us two fashion-loving girls.

I’ve got another show later today, and I’m looking forward to exploring a different side of Milan - the side with charming trattorias tucked away on little side streets and small, independent boutiques hidden behind ancient doorways. It seems like I've stumbled into a fairytale here.

This city truly makes you feel special and inspires you to step into a world of endless possibilities. The colours here are vivid, the architecture is bold, and the energy is magnetic. There’s such a beautiful sense of tradition alongside this edgy modern feel. And let’s be honest, the pink tutus just melt away any barriers and turn this glamorous city into a wonderfully welcoming embrace.

Milan, you are an absolute gem!

The weekend

Well, hello, my tutu-loving friends!

It’s Monday, 22nd November, and I am just about recovering from an absolute whirl of activity here in Milan! I think I have just enough energy to tell you all about my weekend!

As I promised, Saturday and Sunday were filled with all sorts of fascinating activities, all thanks to my new friend Francesca! First things first, Saturday was for discovering the beautiful hidden streets of Milan. Francesca, with her knowledge of her home city, took me on a whirlwind tour.

We started with the incredible Castello Sforzesco, an awe-inspiring 15th century castle that dominates the city’s centre. You can't imagine the detail that goes into this building; you'll get lost in the beauty of the walls and the stories they seem to tell. We spent the morning exploring the intricate courtyards and magnificent halls of the castle. It was all so atmospheric - it felt like walking into a fairytale. We even had an unexpected moment when we happened to bump into a troupe of actors performing in costume – it was truly charming.

Then, it was time to explore some of the hidden trattorias that Milan has to offer! Francesca’s family has a secret list of ‘favourite spots’ for food and treats, and let’s just say I was not disappointed!

We spent the rest of Saturday wandering around this part of Milan, exploring vintage stores, quirky galleries and independent bookshops. We treated ourselves to a selection of artisan pastries from one of the most adorable bakeries, hidden just off the main road. Francesca swore the pastries here are as much part of the city as the fashion shows themselves. And, oh, you just have to believe her – they were to die for!

Sunday, on the other hand, was about indulging in some very fine fashion. Francesca insisted I explore one of Milan’s most opulent shopping districts. I thought I was already quite smitten with the city’s boutiques, but we ventured into an area filled with even more decadent and stylish shops!

The whole experience was quite a whirlwind. We browsed beautiful collections of luxury fabrics and stunning accessories, each more decadent than the last. One little shop I particularly loved, which felt like stepping back in time to the Victorian era, was overflowing with elegant accessories like ostrich feather fans, jeweled gloves, and luxurious silk handbags. My word! I couldn't resist buying a charming hat box decorated with delicate floral appliques. I mean, can you even imagine what gorgeous hat I’m going to wear with it?

Oh, and the shopping was just the beginning of a wonderful day. Later in the afternoon, we found a charming, intimate theatre for a performance of traditional Italian theatre. There we saw a wonderful production based on the comedy plays of commedia dell'arte! I was completely captivated by the vibrant costumes and the expressive performance of the actors, each embodying a distinct character from the Italian stage. Francesca even insisted on a delicious ice cream break – and as you know, darling, I don’t ever say no to ice cream.

This city just knows how to spoil you, it truly does. Every turn brings you into a world of culture, beauty and amazing food! Francesca insists it's because Milan has been the capital of Italy for over 500 years – a vibrant and enduring history. And who am I to argue, especially when she has taken me to a place where you can actually taste history through their incredible dishes!

We spent the evening enjoying the magical city lights before tucking into another hearty feast at her family’s favorite trattoria. You won't find any ‘touristy’ spots on this secret family menu! There are certain dishes here you simply can't get anywhere else! And they all came with delicious regional wine, so it truly felt like a celebratory feast.

Before I went to sleep on Sunday evening, Francesca sent me home with a bag of ‘family-favorite’ treats. Apparently they are a tradition when the family welcomes someone to the city. They included a beautifully crafted little pot of fragrant, creamy gelato – and, of course, they gave me a delicious pastry to enjoy, too. My heart truly did sing as I nestled down for sleep.

This has truly been one of my favourite travel adventures. Francesca really did show me Milan in the most exquisite way, and I've fallen utterly in love with the charm and vibrancy of this extraordinary city.

I know this blog is getting a little long – you really must start looking for your favourite chair to get comfy. Next Monday, I have to tell you all about my trip to Venice, and, I’ve already been working on my wardrobe for that one. Oh, darling, just imagine – my perfect pink tutu will look positively magical in front of a Venetian backdrop. You just wait, there are more exciting stories on their way…

Until then, enjoy the world! And never forget, a little twirl always brightens a dull moment.

Lots of love and sparkle,

Emma x
