Pink Tutu Milan #666: Bonjour, Bel Paese! 🩰🇮🇹

Wednesday 12th March 2008

Ciao, darling! It's me, Emma, back with another installment of Pink Tutu Milan!

This week I'm absolutely buzzing, because guess what? I'm finally in Italy! I’ve been yearning to visit this beautiful country for years, and thanks to a whirlwind of ballet gigs in London, I managed to snag a few days for myself to explore Milan, the fashion capital of the world!

I’m so excited, I could burst! Just getting off the train at Milano Centrale, I was swept away by the energy, the buzz, and the undeniable Italian flair that seems to permeate everything here.

I know, you're probably thinking: “Emma, in Milan? What’s a pink tutu doing there?" But hold on, my lovelies! I’m here on a mission. I’ve been feeling a bit out of my depth in recent weeks. Ballet rehearsals and performances were non-stop, but it wasn’t enough. There’s a certain itch in my heart for adventure and exploring the world through a pink tutu lens. So, here I am, ready to spread my tutu wings in Milan.

A Fashion Fairy's Delight

Let me tell you, Milan is a haven for any fashion-loving, girly girl. From the second I stepped into the bustling Piazza del Duomo, my senses were overloaded with gorgeous colours, textures, and… tutus! Yes, even here in Milan, the fashion-forward city of the world, a dash of tulle can never go amiss!

I stumbled upon a shop window, brimming with the most beautiful, delicate lace tutus, their softness making my heart melt like a marshmallow over a campfire. My inner fashion fairy started screaming for joy, "Emma, Emma, look! They have tutus that are both chic and sparkling!” I felt an undeniable pull, so of course, I had to step inside.

Inside the shop, it was like stepping into a whimsical, ballet-inspired wonderland. The walls were lined with racks of shimmering tulle, and in the center, mannequins were draped in the most gorgeous ensembles imaginable: blush pink ballerina tops, ruffled dresses that would make even a duchess blush, and sequined, tulle-accented coats perfect for Milan’s crisp spring nights. My pink-loving heart soared!

It's incredible how the designers here embrace femininity and transform it into absolute masterpieces. They weren’t afraid to incorporate delicate, graceful details, and oh, the fabrics! Every touch, every texture, was a sensory delight. It felt as though the fabrics themselves were whispering, "Wear us, Emma, and feel like a princess.”

A Ballet Blissful Discovery

And speaking of princesses, I wouldn’t be true to my pink-tutu-loving self if I didn’t indulge in a little ballet pilgrimage, right? So, I took a charming tram ride (yes, they have trams here in Milan! I'm feeling incredibly fancy, don’t you think?) to the Teatro alla Scala, Milan’s famed opera house and a ballet paradise.

Even before I stepped inside, the theatre’s stunning façade captivated me. It felt like a glimpse into a world of exquisite artistry and refined elegance, and trust me, darling, this little pink tutu was positively radiating!

Stepping inside, the atmosphere was breathtaking! Ornate gilded ceilings, plush velvet seats, and a stage that seemed to shimmer with anticipation. It was all so, so inspiring. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and let the ambiance of this ballet Mecca wash over me.

The show that evening was Swan Lake. I’m a complete sucker for this timeless classic, and oh my goodness, it was pure magic! The dancers, a troupe of breathtaking ballerinas and handsome dancers, swirled with such elegance and grace, and their talent simply blew my mind. I think I even saw a single tear roll down my cheek at one point, so incredibly moving it was.

But even more than the performance, what I truly loved about my experience at the Scala was the sheer romance of it all. I'm talking about the anticipation before the curtains opened, the gasps and murmurs during the dance sequences, and the rapturous applause afterwards. I just soaked it all in.

You know, seeing a ballet in such a grand theatre really puts the magic back into everyday life. It's a reminder that beauty, grace, and passion exist in all corners of the world. I might be just a small-town girl from Derbyshire, England, but seeing Swan Lake here in Milan, I felt like I was a part of something truly special, something truly magical.

A Walk Among the Grand and the Glittery

The next day, I wanted to experience Milan like a true local. I swapped my usual tram ride for a delightful stroll through the heart of the city. I spent hours wandering through the vibrant Piazza della Repubblica, watching artists paint, street performers entertain, and Milanese locals enjoy a cappuccino. There's something about soaking up the local vibe, getting lost in the little details that truly brings a city to life.

Speaking of vibrant, I found myself mesmerized by the Duomo. It’s this beautiful cathedral, with a spiky roof, white marble, and an air of history so thick you could practically touch it. This grand old dame was just screaming “pink tutu photo opportunity!” It was so stunning, so utterly photogenic, it was begging to be included in my social media feed!

Walking the streets of Milan is a symphony of colors. From the vibrant, fuchsia hues of blossoming magnolias to the pale pinks of elegant shops lining the streets, it felt like the whole city was playing a charming, fashion-forward game of “pink, pink, everywhere!”

I even stumbled upon a vintage boutique, tucked away in a charming side street. Inside, it was a treasure trove of stylish delights – 50s-era prom dresses with intricate sequins, sequined jackets and feather boas that begged to be twirled in a dazzling fashion show, and… yes, you guessed it, a shelf crammed full of pink tutus! This time, my inner fashion fairy was practically doing somersaults with joy!

An Unexpected Gem: A Ballet Studio in the Heart of Milan

Oh, and the best part of my Milan adventure?

I discovered the most delightful ballet studio tucked away in a quiet street just off Via Montenapoleone. The name? It was, naturally, called “Balletto e Tulle”. It was just meant to be!

The studio itself had an air of elegance and old-world charm. I took a ballet class with a charismatic teacher named Francesca, who wore the most chic, powder-pink ballet shoes and, naturally, a ballet dress made of shimmering pink tulle. She taught with such passion, reminding me how powerful and beautiful this art form really is.

What's even more impressive? It was a diverse, welcoming space. There were students from all walks of life, from serious professionals to enthusiastic beginners, like myself, all united by a shared love for ballet.

My little Pink Tutu heart skipped a beat. There I was, a Derbyshire girl in Milan, surrounded by a community of ballet lovers. It’s amazing how a simple, shared passion can break down borders, language barriers, and all those things that often separate us. Ballet is universal, and seeing all those beautiful bodies in motion, with a common thread of passion, well, it gave me such joy, it was a beautiful reminder that even in this fashion-focused city, ballet still holds its magical place.

Taking Italy Home

My time in Milan has been nothing short of extraordinary. It’s given me such a renewed energy. The excitement of this fashion-filled metropolis is simply infectious.

I can already feel the buzz from my time here influencing my ballet performances back in Derbyshire. My movements have a new sense of confidence and boldness. It feels like the glamour of Milan has slipped right into my dance steps.

And, of course, the most important thing I’ve brought back with me? More pink tutus, of course!

Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled on the Pink Tutu Blog next week for more adventures! It’s always time for a bit of pink, darling!

Au revoir! Emma, Signing off from sunny Italy. 💖
