Pink Tutu Milan #670: A Week in the City of Fashion (and Ballet, Naturally!)

Ciao, darlings! Emma here, back from another whirlwind week in Milano. This is post #670 from your favourite pink-tutu-wearing ballerina blogger, straight from the heart of fashion, food, and fabulousness! I landed in Milano on Sunday afternoon, after a beautiful train journey across the Alps.

Milano always feels so vibrant – the bustling streets, the elegant trams, the scent of freshly baked pastries wafting from cafes, it's enough to make any ballerina’s heart beat faster. And speaking of hearts, I’m completely smitten with Milano’s dedication to the arts. This week, my dancing shoes barely had a moment to rest.

Ballet Bonanza!

First on my agenda was a glorious ballet performance at Teatro alla Scala, a dream come true for any ballerina. This magnificent opera house with its grand architecture was a sight to behold. The show itself was an exquisite adaptation of La Sylphide, featuring stunning costumes and a delicate yet powerful performance that left me utterly spellbound. Afterward, I found myself mesmerized by the swirling layers of tulle and delicate lace adorning the women in the elegant, yet relaxed, cafes surrounding the theater. There was something so romantic and ethereal about the entire experience – you could almost hear the graceful movement of a ballerina, even without a tutu in sight.

Milanese Movement: The Grace of Street Ballet

Of course, my visit wouldn't be complete without experiencing the magical fusion of ballet and everyday life that defines Milano. The city is bursting with impromptu ballet moments. In one of the many parks dotted around the city, I found myself caught in the heart of a breathtaking street performance. It wasn't your typical ballet, but instead, a breathtaking display of raw energy and graceful movements, with the dancers defying gravity in unexpected ways, right in front of a small gathering of onlookers, all lost in the enchantment of their performance. It’s a reminder that ballet isn’t confined to grand theatres - it thrives even on cobbled pavements, under the watchful eyes of curious tourists and admiring locals.

Finding Fashion: My Milano Style Spree

What trip to Milano would be complete without indulging in some retail therapy, darling? I started my spree in the chic, high-end boutiques, admiring exquisite silk and cashmere and browsing elegant dresses with the dreamiest of colours, then dipped into the buzzing atmosphere of vintage shops and trendy vintage stores. Finding unique treasures to adorn my wardrobe was like discovering hidden gems amidst the fashion treasures that Milano boasts.

There was one shop in particular that I was especially drawn to. It was housed in a converted warehouse, hidden down a backstreet, and stocked with vintage fashion finds from decades gone by. You know those places that have the air of mystery and a story waiting to unfold, just begging you to discover its secrets? Well, this shop had it in spades. The owner, a vibrant and charismatic lady who reminded me of a graceful, yet fierce ballerina, even offered me a fitting in her beautiful little backroom. The fabric, textures, and even the smell of the dresses were just intoxicating! I fell in love with a blush pink satin evening dress, with a delicate ruffle on the skirt that just echoed the airy elegance of a ballet dancer's tutus. A true vintage gem and the perfect addition to my ballerina-inspired wardrobe.

Milanese Moments: A Glimpse into Local Life

Beyond the glamorous façade, there’s a quieter side to Milano that charmed me with its authentic Italian flavour. It’s all about those everyday moments – catching the morning tram with its sun-drenched interiors and friendly passengers, sipping cappuccinos while watching life flow by in bustling cafes, or indulging in mouth-watering focaccia from local bakeries with the tantalising aroma that wafts down the streets. And let’s not forget the laughter, the friendly banter, and the generosity that define the spirit of the city. It's in these moments that I truly feel connected to the heart of Milano.

Thursday's Treasure: Museo del Novecento

After a wonderful, late breakfast at my favourite local bakery, I spent Thursday afternoon lost in the magical world of the Museo del Novecento. It's a modern art haven, with vibrant canvases, mesmerizing sculptures, and breathtaking architectural features, giving me all the inspiration for my dance performances. I could almost feel the rhythmic movements in the abstract patterns and colours displayed on the walls, and the sculptures, with their powerful postures and graceful curves, mirrored the delicate precision of a ballerina's every step. This visit inspired me to incorporate a touch of modern art into my performance, which could be an incredible and thought-provoking spectacle, a unique twist on classical ballet, if you will!

A Final Touch of Ballet Magic: Weekend Revelations

My last day in Milano was a treat! The weather was sunny and crisp, perfect for an afternoon of wandering around the city's most vibrant squares and exploring charming corners filled with local life. Of course, I couldn’t resist slipping on my favourite pair of ballet flats and strolling through the quaint cobbled streets of Brera.

I ended my trip with a special visit to a charming boutique selling handcrafted tutus, handmade with intricate details and playful designs. I managed to resist buying anything (this time!) but I spent hours dreaming about the possibilities – imagining each tutu paired with a perfect dance move, creating an ensemble of breathtaking choreography.

And as I sat on the train, waving goodbye to the city lights of Milano, I felt a surge of inspiration and a warmth for this incredible city. Milano is truly a haven for ballerinas and fashionistas alike - a symphony of style and graceful movement, with enough beauty to inspire countless choreographic creations.

Till Next Week!

That’s all from Milano, darlings. This is Emma, signing off with a twirl and a kiss, reminding you to live your life with a little bit of magic, a touch of pink, and always remember that you can always add a bit of sparkle with a tutu!

Until next Monday, when I’ll be sharing another thrilling week in this wonderful world of ballet, fashion, and travel.

Ciao for now!

XOXO

Emma
